Eccentric Iconoclast It's the neuter form of -this-, and is used in phrases like "this is a computer" or "this is a tweezers." They don't have a form of -be- in the present tense except for –есть–, which is quite similar to the Spanish -hay-. Ah, thank you. I was pretty sure that there was no present 'to be,' but someone kept saying это meant to be... So you mean, like, 'there are bananas?'

So, how do you tell the diference between "this car" and "this is a car?"
Also, spelling bees in Russia must be a nightmare.
I spent five minutes last night learning how to spell "здравствуйте."
Seriously. Well, that doesn't seem like a lot, but, it is, "это" is so much easier. Well, hey, I'm not a native, so, I'm probably just over exaggerating.

When saying 'this car', car is машина, a feminine noun, and the 'this' is functioning adjectivally and it is inflected to match the feminine. When you're saying 'this is a car', however, 'this' remains neuter. So the former is эта машина, and the latter is это машина. These are pronounced the exact same way, but that's a different story and there still is a lexical distinction. It's only with neuter nouns that there isn't a lexical distinction between 'this ___' and 'this is a ____'.

In my book I have, it says that До скопого is pronounced like До скорово.
Where does this change come from? (I mean the г>в)
