Maya felt the heat from Karite's body tug at her conscious, and without really knowing why, she leaned towards him, her eyes closed. She had wanted this for a long time...Shuga had never tolerated it. Then again, Shuga was never conscience or around long enough for Maya to dare get this close to her. She took this now knowing it might very well turn around and bite her in the a**. "Aunt Shuga's been gone a long time.." she murmured, and she sighed. "Suko...got strong. He didn't used to be. Not like that...not strong enough to hurt me like this..." she whispered in a lower tone that sounded almost fearful. She swallowed thickly and shook her head, another deep sigh escaping her. "I trained wrong...I let him hurt Baki."
Maya reached up and poked Karite's cheek where she had marked him. "This bothers you. What does it mean where you come from?"

Looking down at Maya he was a beyond shocked at the reaction. Letting go of the kunai and smiling. Karite listened to Maya as she spoke of what was on her mind. She seemed to be worried about Shuga. He hadn't seen Shuga since the night since she left for war. She had been gone for a long time. The she spoke of Suko, which he could only assume was the Uchiha. He was very strong. All he did was train though. Maya was a leader though. She had the strength to lead. If he followers weren't Orika, Shisei, and himself. When she spoke of what happened to Baki he swallowed hard. To see him like that made it hard to believe anyone from shima could do that to one of their own, but it had happened with Kore as well. Then the girl poked him in the cheek and asked about his mark she had given him. "You have different strengths Maya, you are a leader. Suko...Suko is a power house, but only because of his clan. Even I who came to this island with no knowledge of shinobi have heard the stories of his people. You work hard with nothing there is a difference there, or at least that is my opinion." He smiled down at her before slightly turning back to a sleeping Kore. "Shuga is fine, she seemed much tougher than anything on this island or anything on any island." Turning back and looking down at her rubbing his face. He was almost afraid to tell her what the mark meant. They were having such a great conversation for once and it seemed she had finally accepted him. Telling her what the mark meant in his culture may show her he wasn't ready to be Tategami. He had still a small hold on his old home. His Uncle was the only hold he had left, but it was strong. "Where I am from it is known as the mark of shame. All those who were marked with it were soon sentenced to death. When you marked me I was afraid for my life and a little disappointed but for you I think it might mean something different considering how long I have lived."

Maya blinked, and righted herself, running her hands through her cropped hair. Well damn.
"Means...not shame, Karite. Not here. It's.." She sighed, frustrated. "It's...on Aunt Shuga's tent. It's what my symbol used to be. She was leader, but she never really 'ficially made me... like... 'onno.." Flustered and slightly embarrassed, she turned to him and gave him a half smile. "Kin'a like if anythin' happens to me...you're in charge." She ruffled his hair gently, but turned away from him, sitting cross-legged and staring up at the sky. Where was her aunt? Karite was right, the old bird was tough, but even Resa had met her match in action. Shuga was tough...but not invincible. She sighed and rolled her shoulders, cracking her knuckles and debating further. Sukotto did train like hell at the cliffs; he was never really around the others....like she was. But she spent her days hunting, not training. That was good and bad - good because she wouldn't go hungry, and neither would others that knew they could go to Mai for food, but bad because she wasn't training the way she should have been to get as strong as he was. But from now on...
Well...she wasn't Sukotto. And Sukotto was nowhere near as good on a team as she worked with Baki. She'd train and she'd go back - and she'd kick his a** from here to whatever island his red-eyes had come from. She smirked to herself, wiping the expression from her face relatively quickly before repositioning herself to sit back to back with Karite, leaning against him enough to let him know he was supporting her posture.

Karite was taken back by what Maya said. He would be in charge if anything happened to her? He didn't want to imagine anything happening to someone he considered his big sister. As she leaned against him and pushed a little, Karite pushed back to even things out. Looking up at the sky he remembered how he felt in the Wave Country with his parents. It was nothing like he felt now. Kore was his best friend of all time. They were going to go far and he knew it. Orika, was the love interest of his teenage poetic heart. They would make a good team off the battle field. Maya, who had viewed as a sister since he had meet her was finally accepting him. He was finally at home. "Maya...would it be alright if...I called you my sister? I never had any siblings and older siblings from what I have heard watch over their younger ones." Karite wasn't sure what he was getting at, but Maya was his family now. It was all falling into place. Soon he would become a shinobi, than he would be Tategami, than he would fine tune himself into the perfect protector and the perfect thief. Along that path Kore, Maya, Baki, and Orika would be there for every step.

With a soft snort, Maya tapped the back of his head with her own. "Tategami are family, Karite...jus' one big pride. You still got'a lot'a trainin' t'do, but...every pride needs a few cubs." She took a deep breath, feeling...calm. Big sister huh? The thought bothered her a little bit, because she had considered Seshiro her big brother - and look where he'd gone. Branded a traitor by Shinichi-sama, who was a jerk anyway even if he was strong, and gone from the island. Siblings. Maya barely remembered her parents...had she had any siblings? The thought bothered her a little bit, but...hell. The small ache in Maya's chest began to recede, and she closed her eyes. She would train Karite herself then, the way Shuga hadn't trained her. If he could read, he could teach her what the Tategami clan jutsu scrolls said. Well, obviously he could read, most people could. She was probably the only one that had never really bothered. Maybe she'd go back and try....bah. No way - that would distract from her physical training. But then...well, it was something to ponder while she worked on skins. Speaking of, it was about time hers were finished soaking! She groaned, having forgotten about them, and then debated finishing them in the morning. No, she would probably have to be up early in the morning, and it was only three skins. She could try and finish them off, then set them to dry. Hm...

If she focused, she could do it. She shifted her weight and stood, making her way over to the barrels where the skins soaked and sitting down, grabbing the empty skulls again and rinsing them thoroughly. With precision that should have been impossible in the receding light, Maya began to cut up chunks of fat from each of the different animals. The lynx fur would take less fat than the buck and doe, but still, handling the slippery stuff was annoying and greasy...and Maya wasn't a fan of greasy. Dirty, gritty, muddy, sure - but not greasy. She made a face as she worked, the thoughts in her head strictly focused on what she was doing. This part she had almost always done for her aunt, who also hated the greasy feel of the animal fat. Maya pondered cutting some extra, and making a few lamps for the winter nights. Karite didn't seem to fear the dark, but it was always good to know where you were going. Maya often left stuff lying around, and her mid-night walks were when she found them..and not always in the most pleasant ways. She sucked in a sharp breath at that thought, and made sure the ground was clear before she sat down.

Sitting with the greasy chunks of animal fat before her, she again took the three skulls and mixed each corresponding chunk of fat with water, mixing it well and making a liquidy goop that was more liquid than goop. Yuck - she had hated this part too. The feel of the stuff between her fingers was enough to make her never want to cure another fur or skin again in her life, but it was the only way she would ever really know how to make money or trade for other things she needed. With the lynx, she wanted to have Mai make her something new to wear. Maybe...but she would need to trade...well, no, she could bring more steaks to Mai in return for the work it would take to fashion the furs into something she could wear. She would have to hunt another deer and cure the skin, not the fur, so that she could have Mai make those into new pants or something of the sort. Maya closed her eyes for a moment, feeling slightly overwhelmed. She would have to do the hunting before the summer arrived, or even... it would have to be before mid-spring. She could wear her current pants for a while, though they would get torn by the time summer started, and she could cut the sleeves off her shirt, though that would ruin it. What did Shuga have hiding in those trunks? Maya hadn't ever looked, but she would have to check them soon.

The lynx fur would make a nice fur collar on something, just as trim to accent something. In a more practical sense, wolverine fur would be better to use on any hoods she would need for the winters ahead, since wolverine fur didn't freeze and was warm enough to melt the snow that would fall from the sky. It would keep her warmer than any other sort of fur. Maya worked the goop into the skin-side of the fur after having wrung out most of the water from it. She applied it evenly, rubbing it in and making sure that it was really getting in there. With this, the fur would be rendered waterproof, which was probably one of the most important parts of the entire process. Maya gave herself a small smile - she had a lot of knowledge as far as furs were concerned - really, she didn't think anyone else knew the types of things she did. And yet, she was so much slower than the rest of them. It was funny that survival and intelligence didn't go hand in hand, but then...she was an animal that survived, hard and trained. Not a soft squishy bookworm... but even that was kind of mean to think. Ah well...she concentrated and finished the lynx fur easily, setting it aside and stretching it over a frame, knowing that it would be set by morning.

Karite smiled his big tooth filled smile. He was happy Maya said that. He finally had a family. They were not ordinary by any means of the word but they were his. "Nee-chan, do you think you could teach me the jutsu for graduation? Sorri Ibazi and Serena Raiken have already graduated. I don't want Shisei to get stronger than me. Something about him...just doesn't sit right in my stomach. If I learn the jutsu I can be ready for anything. I will be better prepared to protect Kore and Ruha...my family." Karite still seemed a little skeptical of the word but he loved the idea. He also liked the fact Maya had not been as hard as everyone said. She was still tough but he knew with time, she would be a better shinobi and person due to his involvement. Karite would grow the same because of her. "Speaking of jutsu Nee-chan. I heard that every clan has their own secret jutsu. Is it the same for the Tategami?"

Karite remembered when he said jutsu that he had still not cleared his circle. Running over to it. He stood in the middle and formed the boar symbol. While not the usual symbol one would use to release chakra he felt more comfortable with it. Breathing in deeply he easily found his inner strength. That weird, warm, blue fuzzy feeling in his chest. Spreading it throughout his body he took another breath and pushed as hard as he could outwards. Feeling a whipping sensation around him he saw it. A blue tornado of sorts. It had cleared a very even circle around causing the snow to move and the ground to be shown. He had controlled his chakra for the first time while not being angry. He was either getting better or he was just more mature.

Kore woke up from his sleep. Looking around he was bored and wanted something to do. Looking back at the tree he had been hitting earlier that day. Walking up to the tree Kore noticed it still had snow on top of its branches. Looking at the tree the cub lowered its head and smashed his head at it. As the cub reared back and shook his head nothing happened. Looking at the tree he had forgotten how much forced he had used before. Kore backed up a little further. He might need a running start to get this tree snow less.

Kore had backed away from the tree and dug into the ground. He wanted a good launch to make sure he aimed correctly. Leaning against his hind legs the cub pushed off like a runner would at a race. The cubs legs slipped and found it hard to regain traction as he came at the tree no faster than a crawl before his head on collision As he struck the tree he ended up crumpled on the ground like a piece of paper. The cub had messed up again.

Karite listened carefully as he heard a bell. Thinking what that could mean he remembered. It was the festival dinner in which he was suppose to attend by Shinichi-sama's orders. "Nee-Chan! I have to go. Shinichi-sama told me to be at the dinner or die. I would rather not." Talking off his vest and removing his dirty mesh shirt the boy threw them over the small tent. Whistling for Kore the boy ran as hard as he could towards the rice farms. "I will bring you back some food Nee-chan." Karite ran off into the darkness shirtless with nothing but his gloved and bandaged hands and his best friend running beside him. He was a goofy kid, but something inside had made everything click. He was in a point of pure happiness.

Maya knew that the festival would be the last time there was a huge meal for a long time. The floating rumors of Shinichi killing that wild man weren't good; they didn't settle well in her stomach. The Orochi had only frozen Ichi in stone and a group of shinobi had gone after him. How would the wild man's sister, the island girl, react? Crazy jungle woman would destroy what was left of Shimagakure with her mystical mumbo-jumbo. Meh...Maya figured she should go eat, but shook her head. She wouldn't leave Baki here alone, hell no. She growled softly, rubbing the finishing goop onto the buck's skin, stretching it over a larger frame and setting it near the lynx fur, barely noting when Karite left to go eat himself, with Kore. She did, however, smile ever so faintly when his footsteps were gone. It would be an interesting upcoming months, and for that she didn't mind at all. Even so... Maya knew that their story wouldn't be as bad as hers before, and somewhere there would definitely be a good twist to it that would make all the bad crap worth it. Maybe...

Maybe Karite really would help her learn what the Tategami scrolls said...that would be great. They could learn them together...like a real family was supposed to do. Maya sniffled; where had Shuga gone? Ah well... Maya repeated the same process she had done on the last two skins on the doe's skin, stretching it firmly over a slightly smaller frame than the buck's. She was done; in the morning, then, they would be done and ready for use. She looked up at the stars, and gave a wistful smile. Her new 'family'...
Maya stretched, ready to curl up next to Baki, who she could feel was breathing better and sleeping off the exhaustion from the physical beating. She scowled again, swearing to kill Sukotto, and crawled into the tent next to her best and truest friend, curling up and closing her eyes. She rested her head against Baki's chest, his heart beating slowly, steadily, and lulling her to sleep. When Karite came back, he would take his place in his 'new' tent, or he would curl up with her in the main tent. Now that Maya considered it...
She wouldn't mind either way.
