Dan: There is a short story that was written by Robert McCammon, the book that I read it in was called Blue World, and was a collection of his stories.
This short story is similar to the claim in your signature, only it was an internal debate on piercing one's eye to be rid of the images that the person was seeing that weren't there. Monologue of a schizophrenic by the sounds of it, but entertaining never the less for it.
You might like it.

That story actually sounds rather interesting. .__. Shoot, another book to add to my list. I wish my library had more books actually IN STOCK, rather than making me create this stupid wishlist online.
