"Its almost done," Maia assured the excited cat sidhe. "Besides, sweets aren't good for you. ...If you have them all the time." She offered him a can of tuna and opened the lid. She set him down.
"He can? Clever. No, you never showed me."

Seamus voiced his displeasure at being denied cake, looked to the tuna, looked for the kitchen, began for the kitchen, reconsidered the tuna, and did a u-turn to nibble some. Alright. Tuna was okay for now.
Lori nodded, coming further into the house. "He's fae. He can spell and think and reason and all kinds of non-cat things. People in Scotland prepared riddles to keep cat sidhe away, traditionally, and toys. To distract them. He's... he's half-cat."
He pulled out a chair in the dining room. "The birthday girl should sit."

Maia smiled and stroked Seamus as he ate. He was pretty excited for cake, wasn't he?
"He can do riddles?" Luca asked. "I'll ask him one."
Maia sat when the chair was pulled out for her, smiling. "Did you like your present, Lori?" She asked. "Luca told me he gave it to you."

"Maia do you want to make Seamus a board later? I've never showed Luca," Lori asked with a smile. He knew how much Maia loved Seamus and thought she might have fun showing him off for once. Then she asked another question. He blushed and looked down a moment, then nodded. "Yes. Yes, I liked it very much."
From the kitchen came a booming version of "Happy Birthday" and a black forest cake decorated carefully with whipped cream and cherries and big colorful candles for Maia's age. Not quite forty. Almost, though. Dari and Lori both joined in the singing as Toby say the cake down in front of Maia.
"Blow them out and make a wish!"

"Okay," Maia agreed with a smile. She was always happy to have another reason to spend time with Seamus. "Good!"
Toby was so loud.
She admired the cake as it was set down in front of her and blew them out. Her wish, and she wasn't telling anyone, was that they could all stay as happy as they were. Forever.

Clapping followed, and then Toby offered Maia the cake knife and disappeared only briefly to get plates. He wanted to watch her cut it! He'd bet she'd never had a birthday cake, and he was pretty sure her birthday had never been on this day either, but that barely mattered when you were immortal. You could celebrate your existence any day you wanted.
MEOOOOOOOOOW
Toby looked back at Seamus and nudged him with a toe. "Shh! Just give us a minute!"

Maia was grinning at Seamus' behavior. Such impatience! She waited for Toby to return before cutting the cake. Chocolate was worse for cats than sweets were, so Seamus would have to have a very small piece.

As pieces were cut and put on plates and passed around, Seamus jumped up on the remaining dining room chair and set his paws on the table, voicing his disapproval about not having his piece. Did they forget he got a piece? They had better not! He'd made sure they didn't!
Toby just laughed. Seamus tried to take a step onto the table and Lori held up a finger at him.
"No. We wait to be served."
MEOOOOOOW
"I know you're probably cursing at me in cat, but it's true."
"I think Seamus wants a piece too," Toby said to Maia. Smaller than any of theirs, of course, but he could have one.

"I think he does," Maia placed a piece of cake in front of Seamus. Hopefully he wouldn't complain that it was smaller than everyone else's. She kissed Toby's cheek.
"Happy now, kitty?" she said, turning back to the sidhe.

Seamus wasted no time. He went face-first into his cake, elbows standing up like spikes, all while purring. He was emitting a sort of "arrgllrgllrgll" noise, but Lori waved a hand dismissively.
"He'll be fine. This is really good! Did you make this?"
Toby shook his head. "No, I cheated and bought it from Piggly Wiggly."
Lori gave him an odd look.
"Yes, I made it." You silly b*****d.

Despite Lori's reassurance, Maia was still concerned about the sounds Seamus was making. They'd somehow gotten him addicted to cake. She couldn't imagine why--actually, it probably was her fault. She'd given him a cupcake and then invited him to Toby's party.
"You're an incredible baker," Luca complimented him, smiling at Toby. "I can't even get a cake mix to turn out nicely."

Toby smiled. "No? How do you manage that?" Add eggs, add oil, put in hot box for __ amount of time... Neither of those men were going to eat, were they? "Well we were all planning to do a once-a-month sort of dinner thing, so you're invited to the first. Maybe we'll offer lessons." He gave Luca a silly little look.
Lori just laughed. "I think I might be beyond saving."

"I can manage cereal and sandwiches," Luca grinned. "Last time I tried It sunk in. Not sure why." He paused and beamed. "I'd really like that." He looked to Lori hopefully.
"Toby taught me, and I couldn't cook at all." Maia smiled at the guys.

"Lots of reasons," Toby said with a smile and a shrug, "Old mix or baking powder, overbeating, too hot, letting it sit too long... I only know because I've done it myself and had to learn to fix it. Both of my parents cooked." He nodded and ate more cake.
Lori smiled and nodded. Of course. Why would he say 'no'?
"Oh, come on. You didn't learn that fast." It was clear to Toby that he was just trying to flatter her. He knew she was a fast learner!

Luca was beaming. "You'll teach me to cook?" Maybe he'd be able to make Lori's favorite foods! He took a bite of his cake and after chewing and swallowing he said, "So you've taught people before?"
Maia looked between Luca and Toby. "He's the best teacher--cooking, That is. Lori and Dari also qualified as best teachers. "I did! Before I came here I was living off hamburgers."
