"Then I'd have to carry you both," Maia said, shaking her head.
She Sat on a bench to tie her skates, then watched to make sure Dari had them fastened tightly. "Ready," she said.

Toby began to slide backward, bringing both his best friend and his girlfriend onto the ice. If their ankles were weak, they may wobble. If their balance was off, they may fall. He could feel the pressure in Dari's hand fluctuating rapidly. Were they all going to fall over? Maybe. That was half the fun.
Dari watched his feet wobble and then found his center of balance. Now as long as he didn't have to actually move...

Maia wobbled a bit before regaining her balance--and wobbled a bit more. Standing on ice was hard! "Want to teach?" she asked, smiling at Toby.

Toby laughed slightly. "I'll pull you around a little bit first, okay? It's sort of like a... here." He led them both to the rail around the rink.
"Sort of like a front-slide motion than a step." he wobbled a bit himself but was able to skate in a bit of a circle for them, "and the brakes are at the front. Come on." He held his hands out again and, when taken, began to skate backward. If one went down they all went down, but he felt he was a more useful teaching tool than just leaning on the rail.

Maia was soon taking slidey steps, but she was still wobbling. Breaks out in front? They had to wobble forward to break? Hm. It wasn't easy, but it was fun. She kept her eyes on Toby. It was tempting to watch her feet, but what if he let go and she ran into someone? Awkward.

Toby continued around the outer rim while the more experienced skaters passed them by and then inclined his head slightly.
"Alright, are we ready to try on our own?" he asked.
Dari laughed. "No. But I will try."

Maia didn't let go of Toby's hand, looking concerned. "No," She said. She wasn't ready, she was going to fall, and she preferred to skate with him anyway. "Stay near the railing," She instructed Dari.

"Listen to your mother, Darius," Toby teased, and Dari snickered. He did indeed continue to hold the railing after he let go of Toby's hand. Hm. This was an odd movement to try and master.
"C'mere," Toby said, pulling Maia to him slowly and then turning around so they could all face forward. He kept Maia near the rail as well, just in case she felt unsteady with only him. "Do you wanna go a little faster?"

"Okay," Faster was alright, as long as Toby was there. She gave him a smile. "Not so bad, for someone who hadn't gone skating in years," she observed. Was it like riding a bike, then? People said you couldn't forget that either.

"It could be muscle memory," Dari said.
Toby just shrugged as he began actually skating. It was slowly, but it was nearer the real thing than just inching along. Dari wobbled as he let go of the rail and began to take tiny sliding steps.

Could be. Probably was. He'd said he'd gone skating last when he'd been human, though. She was taking shorter strides than Toby, still a bit cautious.
"We should come more often. Then we'll all be good at it."

"Sure, if you want to," Toby said, "I'm sure there's somewhere out east too, we'd just have to find it. We get internet and cell service there." It was well away from populated towns, though. That was important.
Dari suddenly slid ahead, finding the roll of pressure in his legs easier if he copied Toby's sort of side-to-side motion. He grinned like a child who had just earned a gold star. Of course he was also the only one who wouldn't feel pain if he fell, so he had significantly less fear.

"Google is handy when looking for things," Maia noted. She smiled at him. "I'm looking forward to seeing snow."
Encouraged by Dari's success, she tried to mimic the way he was skating.

The trouble there was that Dari was sending waves of pressure down his legs and had locked some bones. At least it looked correct, and Toby grinned when he saw Maia trying.
"See? It's not so bad. I wish I knew some cool tricks or something."

"You know more than me," Maia said, shaking her head at him. She lost her balance for a moment, stumbling, but latched onto the railing. "Do you think Lori will want to come by for cake?"
