The archmage supposed it made sense. That was the overall plan anyway, to make Barton into a key strategic point to invade the rest of Gaia. They were not made aware of the plan to include Deity at the last minute, however, which resulted in the current conversation. Still, it made the archmage simmer. They had plans of their own in dealing with Barton, but with another entity giving the appearance of being in charge, it would be difficult to execute those plans now. At least, not without a great deal of secrecy.

"The hordes will remain underground then, via the bloodworks, until it is time for the next move," Valas said. "If they continue attacking us, however, we will not be very merciful."

Then he made mention of the obelisk, and how it needs to remain untouched if they were going to provide forces for another attack, because their airship was currently deployed elsewhere and would be unavailable to transport for a while. Informants had already infiltrated Aekea and Durem, both cities which were more or less as undefended as Barton.

"We will await word for the next move. If there is nothing else, I will take my leave."

Unless there was something else to discuss, Valas would vanish and get back to his work.

Add another note of things to do; have the obsidian spire left alone.

Didnt seem like there was anything else at the moment after that. So supppose he should ge tto work then.

Well, better take care of the most current request first, since it was the easiest to do. Decruda began writing one of those little notes he does, and when finished, had one of those many cralwing hands deliver it to the Deity representatives at the sanctuary, requesting the obelist to be left alone. Hell, maybe even cover its presence up as some sort of dark reminder of the horrors of what happened in Barton before they heroically appeared and cleaned the place up. Might win them some points.

Now onto the other matters at hand...

Well, he might as well get out and have some fresh air. He seemed to have been in the underground ruins long enough.

Prophetas, yo. In the back of her mind, Descant wondered if her voice suddenly popping into Decruda's head was annoying at all. That thought was immediately followed by ~Ha, I wish I could see his face whenever I surprised him.~

...He might actually have heard that one. The one she meant for him to hear was: ~Is there anything else you need me to do here? Drows have the prisoners, the troops have the streets.~

Well, he would have been lazy and told her to leave the drow be to figure things out on their own, but with the previous instructions they were given, suppose they should stand down and retreat. Y'know, make it look like Deity came in to save the day, which would effectively earn them the civilian population's respect, and probably all those reconstruction contracts with the civil service or whatever and taking up position as the city's defense force. Basically, it was like manipulating the civilian population to let them be controlled, and make them feel safe because of it.

So then he'd have to tell her the plan, and have those orders redistributed to the drow in the city to retreat to the underground and all that.

Nice plan. ~I'll be home soon enough.~

And that was it. She had the orders, which would be distributed to the proper channels.

What is magic and spellcraft as opposed to latent powers? Restrictions and orderly laws set to limit its use. So why then would any remain to be spellcasters if another can do the same without relying on regents and incantations?

It was a good question wasnt it? A mage may take several seconds of concentration casting a fireball spell while someone else with latent powers may just point their finger, say 'bang', and make one appear. Another problem was its succesptibility to anti-magic, which restricts energy transference from the outer planes and blocks the movement of arcane energy.

However, even with its weaknesses, mages and spellcraft was good for one thing with its restricted use; its potential was simply amazing. It could immitate divine abilities such as animation of dead, it could immitate psionic abilities by granting a user similar powers temporarily, it could alter reality to a limited degree such as the state of matter and time, and it could even make the impossible possible.

However, most importantly, it does not cost the magician any of their own energy and stamina to cast a spell, drawing energy from the outside and focussing it through material components.

There was so much anti-magic everywhere was there not? That which specifically blocks off the arcane pathways of power to halt progression of spellcraft. So what if someone was to specifically create an effect which drains latent power user's of their energy they use when they perform their abilities?

Imagine a leaching effect which sucks the energy right out of an individual as they open their own pathways to bring an effect into the physical world, yanking their energy forcefully out of them, forcing them to expend much more energy than they would normally have to produce the same effect?

How detrimental would that be to those which did not practice spellcraft, but instead simply relied on their own personal energy reserves?

Y'know, there comes a time when the perfection of one's study and research becomes complete and perfect. Especially after robbing facilities of equipment and supplies to make it all possible.

From what was the development of clones became the clones enhanced with the ability of others. And from enhanced clones comes the direct enhancement of a different being altogether through a live genetic splicing.

Of course, there were plenty of horrid side effects from the direct process, but the result was all the same.

So what would happen if the everyday normal people of the world were no longer so ordinary, but was just like every other magic power, fireball throwing, super speed moving, perfect looking, use your brain to move things, take on an entire army by themselves 'meta'?

Suddenly the special people would be special no more.

And what if an organized army was compsed of such people?

The bad man sat at his desk, writing a letter on his 'research'. It was a good practice to keep things recorded and archived right? Not to mention he'd be sending out the information to others later on anyway.

Vennix the businessman would have since retired to whatever lodgings presented. Apparently taken to the place despite the obvious zombiness.

Gamma would be long gone. Dismissed since Vennix was willing to weight his value to the Council as enough to keep him safe against any kind of backstabbing.

Meanwhile in the darkness of the underground caverns...

A train of soldiers in unmarked fatigues would be making their way through the maze of tunnels. Although the fatigues-- simple pants and shirts-- were in combination colors for the Deity military, there'd be no rank markings or organization emblems. Name tags would also have pieces of tape pulled over them.

The lead man would be in a white shirt with grey fatigue bottoms, wearing a headpiece that covered the upper half of his face equipped with a forward facing lamp. He also had an assault rifle that he wasn't actively aiming forward, despite the fact that he couldn't tell what could be waiting for him beyond the fifty yard range of his head lamp.

Obviously he was a very poor soldier. One that was tired of walking and didn't want to wear body armor.

But still he lead the few hundred men through the tunnels from Barton to Sorrow's Keep. One step at a time.

"Haaaaaallllt"

The ghostly voice eminated from the dark tunnels, echoing down the empty corridors before drowning out in the distance.

"What businesssss do you have heeeeere?"

Yup. It was one of them shadowy wraithes, all blocking the progress of the train. Well, technically not blocking since no physical actions were taken or anything, but you get the idea.

s**t. This wasn't supposed to be a contact deal. Just walk the boxes through the cave. Fill boxes with treasure and leave.

Not deal with voices.

An extremely professional ready stance. Rifle aimed down the only path of the cavework... at nothing. His light showed only rocks.

"Uhh..."

Who the ******** was he talking to?

"Vennix sent for us."

Behind him were many identical wannabe soldiers out of uniform. Two by two carrying crates together. Bring guns in, take payment out.

Crates get loaded onto trucks and shipped out back in Barton. Guns come in. Gold comes out.

Nobody sees s**t.

"Proccccceeeeeeeeeed."

Hey, just because the undead guardians were around to kill trespassers, didnt mean they did it without discretion. Had to distinguish between friendlies and all that.

Slightly further down the tunnel, there'd be a skeleton with a sign hanging from around its neck. It would read 'Follow me.' Because skeletons can't talk, and the labirynthine tunnels of the keep were rather confusing for those who did not know their way around. It would lead the soldiers towards the treasury.

It's a dark and foggy night, the very kind of night the locals tell people is the worst kind of night one can come to this old, ruined building of a tragic past. The deep glow of the moonlight can barely be seen through the thick mists but almost seem to add an eerie glow to everything around. These kinds of nights usually keep people from coming anywhere near these kinds of places, which is why Alexander chose a night like tonight to come to a place such as this. The red haired man looks around over the wooden fence at the practically collapsed buildings, taking in the haunting sight through grey, almost lifeless looking eyes. This is exactly the kind of place Alexander would expect to find something akin to a banshee and part of him is both frightened and excited by the prospect.

Following shortly behind him is the small form of a baby dragon, his deep red eyes scanning the forest around, not exactly interested in the wooden fence or the building behind it. It's attention is caught by the scurrying of a small rodent, watching the creature before padding over to Alexander and head-butting his leg gently. Alex grins down at his friend and leans down, picking him up and placing the small wyrm on his shoulder as he continues to follow along the fence, his eyes still looking at the buildings.

Deep inside the keep a creature dwelled, a creature that had long been imprisoned, and only now had found its freedom. This being was ancient, older than most of the life forms on Gaia, however it's physical body was not that old, only recently being brought into the material plane. This creature had come to the keep to find peace, and think over important matters, but it seemed that even in this place that the mortals thought was cursed, he could find no salvation.

He could sense Alexander, despite being within what one might call the heart of the ruins. He could feel his very aura, along with that of the wyrm he carried along with him. Perhaps it was some sort of pet, the being had heard that often mortals kept companions in the forms of animals of some sort, it made them feel older, less prone to dying perhaps if they kept around a creature with a shorter life span, however the dragon choice confused the being momentarily, this was not a normal choice for a mortal, to chose a companion which would outlive them one thousand fold.

A silent sigh passed over the delicately featured lips of the entity. He shifted slightly from his pose, which had been sprawled out over a rock. He supposed that he would have to test this mortal, see what metal he was made of. Xevious was hoping that this mortal would run from fear if he heard the slightest noise from deep within the keep, which was why Xevious was going to make a rather large noise.

He rose from his rock, seemingly floating on the air, before turning and coming to a smooth drop to the ground. He raised a hand towards a standing pillar of rock, a crumbling piece of rubble that had once been a corner of some sort of building, and now barely stood, its foundations destroyed somehow. There was a few moments where Xevious did nothing, simply stand there, and then suddenly there was a loud crack, he had found the perfect weak spot to crumble the building fragment from.

Suddenly the fragment was toppling over, and when it fell it produced a cacophony of shattering noises as pieces tumbled away from it, broke on other pieces of ruins, and generally caused mayhem. To top it off, Xevious caused a wave to move through the fog very quickly, giving it the appearence to Alexander that a shockwave had been caused by this fall. If the mortal was astute and brave, or foolish enough, he would be able to follow the wave's source to Xevious.

Both Alex and his pet dragon suddenly turn their heads into the heart of the ruins as a crack can be heard echoing through the mists followed by the sound of an entire tower collapsing down to the ground. Alex can't really see the tower that is collapsing through the thickness of the fog until suddenly a small shock wave races through the mists parting them for a moment and giving Alex some-what of a view of the rubble and dust now spreading into the air. The mists slowly closed back in on themselves, once again blocking Alexanders view of the collapse, but one thing is painfully obvious to the man: Collapsing towers don't make shock waves like that.

It would seem the quote his fathers friend said about him when he was a child would still hold true as he looks to the dragon and the dragon looks back at him.

"Come on, Tylas," he says as he steps toward the gate, the little wyrm yipping (Is that the sound a baby dragon would make? I don't rightly know) as Alexander hops over the wooden fence and starts walking toward the center of the ruins. Both him and Tylas looking around, though Alex pays more attention to the ground in front of him, having no particular desire to fall down any holes while exploring an old, abandoned, haunted keep.

Xevious was watching and sensing from his viewpoint, he could feel the pair begin to move towards his location. He inhaled deeply, letting the cool misty air fill his lungs. It was rather refreshing if he was honest, to feel the cold water logged air down his passageways, it reminded him that it some things on the material plane were vastly superior to the realm he had previously come from.

As the two approached from up the hill, Xevious began to gently float up towards another pillar of rubble. This one wasn't as top heavy, nor was it as tall. The being floated on the air, as though being pulled by invisible strings. He came to the top of the pillar and gently allowed himself to be placed down up the rock. From there he would wait until Alexander and the dragon were close enough to be called to.
