Nita woke slowly, her neck tingling painfully. Why had she been buzzed? she wondered, her memory of the night before hazy. Surely she hadn't drunk too much...
The girl shot up in bed as the memories hit her. Annie attacking. Screaming, growling, fur flying... Fur being singed... The guards showing up amidst the confusion, bodies being carted away. s**t. Had anyone else been killed? She glanced around her duplex. Someone must have made sure she got home safely. Her eyes fell on the carved chair in the corner. Gaius, perhaps.
Oh, s**t. Gaius. Nita buried her face in her hands and shook her head from side to side. She honestly hadn't meant to lead him on...
Bullshit, Neets, she chided herself. You know full well you never tried to tell him about Lauren.
"But I said we were just friends!" Nita protested aloud.
Ha-ha, now you're talking to yourself. Lame.
Shut up. This is going nowhere.
I guess I'll... just have to talk to him and hope he doesn't hate me too much.
Rubbing her neck, Nita dragged herself out bed. This was going to be... interesting.

It'd been a couple days since the incident with Annie... everyone was still dealing with the repercussions of that night, and Gaius was no exception. There was one girl in particular he was needing to talk to…
Making his way up the stairs to her duplex, rather proud of how his walking had improved with the week of practice, he paused at the door, shifting the bunch of flowers to the hand also holding the stick, and gave the door a light knock.
“N-Nita?” His voice squeaked. He winced. “It’s me…”

Of course, Nita had been meaning to go find Gaius and talk to him. However, she had been avoiding it. How lucky for her, there he was. On her doorstep.
The girl answered the door, taking a few deep breaths as she crossed the room to do so. "Hey..." Nita muttered, looking down at her feet. "Come on in." She cleared her throat nervously. "I.. I meant to come see you, after the other night... Were you the one that brought me back here?" She stepped away from the door, twisting her fingers together behind her back.

The awkwardness was palpable. Gaius blushed slightly as he shuffled in. "Don't worry, I'd been meaning to too... And, er, yeah, I did..." His mind flashed back to the not-so-decorous pile of zapped folks he'd pushed back on that rusty wheelchair. Probably best not to mention that aspect. "I dropped you off when we got back to the village..." He glanced over her. "Are you doing okay? You didn't get hurt, did you?"

"Thanks," she said softly, sitting gingerly on the edge of her bed. "And I'm fine. I mean," she clarified, "Physically at least. I really don't know what to think about all of this."
Nita bit her lip. Even with all the 'excitement' caused by Angharad's attack, it was unlikely that Gaius had forgotten that evening's earlier revelation. Picking at a loose thread on the comforter, Nita suddenly blurted out, "Look, I'm really sorry about that other thing..."

"Ah! Right, um... that's actually part of why I came over... Here!" He thrust the bunch of flowers he'd been clutching towards her. They were clearly hand-picked, judging by the stray root or two, but considering the exotic plants available with a short trek into the jungle, it was beautiful in a way, red making up the dominant color scheme.
With the bouquet, Gaius offered a bashful smile. "Don't worry, I don't mean it in that way... I just wanted to apologize. I was an idiot."

"Oh!" Nita exclaimed, accepting the bouquet automatically. Getting up and finding a cup to act as a vase gave her a few brief moments to consider. She flashed a tentative smile as she fussed with the arrangement of the flowers.
"I still should have told you," she insisted. "I really didn't mean to lead you on or anything...."
Even though I did like the attention...

It was impossible to hide the flush on his cheeks, though that didn't stop Gaius from trying. "N-No... I just assumed that... well, you didn't want to rush things, which I could understand. I didn't think that when you said 'just friends' you mean 'just friends'... Ah, that's not sounding right..."
He pulled out one of the chairs around Nita's table, settling down in it side-ways to give his spindly legs a rest. His attention drifted to the papers of the survey lying around, avoiding looking at her. "To be honest... I was kinda hurt... but I think I'm glad that it came from someone else... If you'd told me now, I'd think it was because of how I look." He chuckled self-consciously, rubbing at the side of his neck. "Not that I'd blame you."

Nita shrugged, glancing at Gaius out of the corner of her eye. "No, I know what you mean. I guess I.. I don't know. I really didn't to hurt you." She turned to face him, her voice holding a plaintive note.
Her brows rose in surprise at Gaius' last statement. "Wow... I'd hate for you to think I was that shallow. My girlfriend is turning into a mongoose. A mongoose with horns."

He looked up suddenly, worried that he'd said something wrong. "No no! I-I don't think you're shallow!" He waved his hands frantically. "Not at all! Just, well, I'm not exactly the man I used to be. Clumsy... I'd probably send any new girls running..."
Shifting in his seat, Gaius let the walking stick lean against the table as he stretched out his legs a bit. He looked back at the red panda - now knowing she was off-limits, and smiled. "A mongoose with horns, huh? Well, I guess a horse with wings isn't so strange in comparison, then... Is she, uh, nice?"

"Ehhh, it's okay. Seriously though, everyone here ends up self-concious." Nita sighed, looking down at her stomach, which had always been so flat and trim until her latest transformation.
She sat down across the table in the chair Gaius had made for her, with a grin. "Ya know, my high school's mascot was the pegasus. At least that comes out of mythology..." Nita sighed.
"Lauren is.. complicated. And I haven't seen her in months."

Gaius ducked his head, embarassed that Nita had so easily guessed his serum when Sabin had dangled so many obvious hints in front of him and he'd still been clueless. "Eh, yeah, that's what Sabin said..." he muttered.
The change in Nita's tone made Gaius look back up, concerned as he listened. "You haven't? She... hasn't been in her duplex? But then..." Pausing, an image of the graveyard flashed in his mind. The names quickly listed themselves, but he didn't recall any Laurens among them. "...Where could she be?"

"Pegasus, favorite of the muses, a symbol of flights of fancy," Nita intoned, snickering. "It was kind of a weird school."
"She hasn't been," she said, tracing a complicated design on the tabletop with one finger. "I just wish.. the doctors would tell me something. Moreau knows we're together, and he seemed to approve..." Her eyes flicked to the expensive entertainment unit which graced her duplex.

Gaius frowned and shifted forward, placing a hand near hers as he looked at her. "I wouldn't trust them... not one bit. Why should we? Just look at that trick they pulled Halloween, and did they ever tell anyone about that graveyard, or that there'd been people who'd actually died from this?" He spoke vehemently, the too-recent conversation with Sabin only adding to his dislike of the ones he saw as responsible for their condition, including the painful transformations, their isolation, even Annie was their fault.
However, as the rage cleared, Gaius saw Nita's expression and mellowed. No anger was going to help here. "...Maybe... Maybe if you can talk to one of them... not Sabin, but if there's a nicer one... Ambrose mentioned Aubrey. Maybe she'd tell you the truth... at least it'd be better than wondering?"

"I know, I know," Nita muttered. It was exactly that kind of stunt that Nita hated the most. She had made her peace with the changes, but blatantly cruel 'jokes'... How could anyone look past those? And yet, Lauren did.
"I've talked to Aubrey before. Not about this, but... yeah. She's helped me." She chewed thoughtfully on her lip. In truth, it was almost easier without Lauren around, complicating things with her views on the labs. So much easier to hope that she wasn't terribly ill, locked away somewhere... As long as Nita didn't know anything, she could avoid hearing the worst.
