Since news of the festival reached Salamire Outpost, naturally, Byakko's charge had been bouncing off the walls. Sometimes quite literally- in some of Maneki's bids to win her permission to go, he had pounced on her from the higher boughs of trees sprawling throughout the swamp. He was relentless. 'Merm, please. Merm, it'll be fun. Merm. Meerrm Mermermermermmm.'

Eventually, she gave in.

At first, the answer was a firm, resolute no- with everything that was going on with the rebellion, such a festival seemed... frivolous. Byakko wrote most of these sorts of functions as such. She'd hoped Maneki would have seen the obvious logic in her pattern of thought, but his thinkpan seemed stuck on 'fun' mode. Then one night as Maneki clutched onto her leg as she waded through the swamp and wailed about how much he wanted to go, it dawned upon her. She was always looking for ways to test how Maneki would interact in the world around him, especially without her presence. The comforting blanket of protection the rebellion offered was a weak substitute for the real world. He had still seen so little of Alternia. What was stopping her from doing that now? The spirit of the festival seemed innocuous enough, no military presence... this was an opportunity practically given to her on a platter, was it not?

She conceded. Maneki was overjoyed.

Giving in left Akko with a gnawing anxiety. She wasn't confident he could handle himself. Sure, Maneki showed great aptitude within the confines of the Outpost, but this was far from the welcoming arms of the rebels who seemed to almost unanimously adore him. He was simply much too naive for a mutant. But Byakko wasn't willing to write her protege off as quickly as the festival- and now she was stuck trailing behind him, silent as ever... donning a lusus disguise Athene had put together upon her request. It was incredibly lifelike. Akko suspected she was just wearing a hallowed carcass.

Waddling stoutly, Byakko only let out a simple, but clear, grunt in response to Maneki's question. She would not be speaking tonight, not within earshot of the crowd. Whether she meant yes or no was entirely up to his interpretation. 'Billbear' hung back as the two kids greeted one another, toddling over to stand next to Lanata. She was used to moving on all fours, was even more comfortable doing that, sometimes- but the billed bear costume she donned was horribly restricting. And just a tad bit humiliating.

Ah, his old nemesis. That damn hay pile had been haunting his dreams. Well, he hadn't slept at all last night, so not his dreams. But that damn tealblood was tricky. He'd find what she was hiding here. Or maybe... maybe it was a distraction? The hay pile was only there to distract from what was REALLY going on. What was it? A trapdoor? Some sort of broadcasting equipment or scanner? what was she hiding? There had to be something here. had to be.

"Are you gonna keep staring at me, or are you gonna actually play the game?"

Engrav stared at her for a while longer out of spite. She wouldn't beat him!

OK, he still couldn't find anything, though. The tealblood handed him a ticket with a malicious smile.

Oh, she was enjoying this. It was ON.

Feeling hungry again, Engrav decided mooncakes were once again the way to go. He jumped right in, punching the dough just like an old friend. He was feeling pretty lost today, and pummeling on that dough was really satisfying. The green blood running the booth eventaully told him he'd have to actually make the cakes or get out, so he rolled his eyes and pressed the designs into the cakes. Squirt! the filling shot out and hit the next table over, just like it had yesterday. Whoops.

They cakes still tasted good though. Maybe not the prettiest cakes ever, but who cared?

      ∞ Ephias Sagine

“The whole jubilee...?” Ephias echoed, thoughtful. “Hm.” He drummed his fingers on his arm and watched as the snoutbeast snuffled around the pen, tail lashing as it eyed the pair of trolls leaning against the fence. It gave a disdainful snort and trundled away. Ephias turned to Etsali, face serious.

“I don't think I could refuse a challenge like that,” he said. “I'll be back in a minute... or less.” The corners of his mouth lifted and he gave Etsali a faint smile. Removing his backpack, he went to the gate. A moment later, the large yellowblood in charge of the game was ushering him inside.

Across the pen stood the snoutbeast. Ephias eyed the beast, wary. Outside it had been easy to have bravado, but now that he got a better look at it the snoutbeast looked formidable. Nothing compared to what they had faced back at the swamp of course. Maybe if he just approached it carefully...

The pig bolted.

Oh no, the cauldron. He'd completely forgotten. Ok, there had to be something around he could put in the stupid thing.

There was a handful of hay sticking out of his clothes... no he'd done that last time, and they hadn't liked it. Shoot. There had to be something.

Engrav grabbed a mushroom that was growing at the back of one of the fair booths and sniffed it. Smelled edible, he guessed. Probably would work. It wasn't red or obviously poisonous or anything. He knew about some poisonous mushrooms, and this didn't look like one of them, so it probably would would.

He handed it to the stirrer before he just put in into the pot, who shrugged and tossed it in. Close enough. The stir-troll gave Engrav a whole ticket for his efforts. Maybe he wasn't the best cook ever.

      ∞ Ephias Sagine

Ephias tore after the snoutbeast, shoes sticking in the mud. When they flew off his feet a moment later, Ephias faltered. He glanced back over his shoulder, momentarily debating whether to go get them. That turned out to be a mistake. Just then he hit a slippery patch and the world slipped out from underneath him. He landed on his back, the mud squelching beneath him. Disoriented but unhurt, he scrambled to his feet, glancing around.

The snoutbeast had paused at a pole near where Etsali stood. Shoot. She saw that, didn't she? He could feel embarrassed later though. He needed to focus on the task at hand. Stepping out of the mud pit, Ephias resumed his pursuit. As it escaped around the ring, clinging to the fence, he moved on the inside track. Several seconds later he had caught up with it. Arms reaching, he tried to take hold of it.

"Look! Cake!" A shrill voice rose over the peaceful murmuring of the crowd. Small head bobbing up and down, Frossa sprung enthusiastically up over the sea of horns in an attempt to get a better view of the mooncakes, rocking on the toes of her boots. Her twin curls coiled and bounced, swaying along with her jumping. But it was no good- she couldn't see. She was simply too short. Frossa's grip on Alifax's hand tightened, wrenching his fingers as she yanked the redblood over to the stall. "Let's get some." She glanced back to throw him a sharkish grin, offering no room for debate on the matter; not that he'd have any objections. He rarely seemed to. What other reason were they here than delicious country food?

"These look simply scrumptious~" Frossa cooed, batting her eyelashes up at the curvy farmer tending to the customers. At her prompt to sample some, Frossa politely giggled, covered her mouth and thanked the 'gracious lowblood'. Plucking one of the cakes off the sample platter, she quickly deposited it into her mouth in three dainty bites.

Then she reached for another.

Then another. And another. And another. Her previously polite bites had dissolved into all out shovelling, (at one point slapping the hand away of a orangeblood who tried to reach for one), until the plate was completely barren.

Frossa picked at a lone crumb, licked her finger, and smiled cherubically up at the greenblood. "Really. Fine work."

"Alifax!" Frossa startled, clapping her hands suddenly. "Shall we try our hand at this?" She turned to beam up at her friend, reaching to yank him over to where the other trolls were working. Letting out a giggled chortle, she rose the back of her hand to her face and snickered up at him. "It seems like such a lowblooded task, but maybe it'll be fun." Her jabs at his hue wouldn't phase him, she knew, but it still felt like something more in the working classes expertise. Her specialities laid more in the eating part.

Soon enough, their cake-like monstrosities were complete. Frossa stared down at hers quizzically, having expected not to have created a master piece that would have pleased her own gullet but- this... this wasn't even edible, was it?

She poked the doughy, overbaked mess. "Eh..." Her standards were low when it came to food, honestly, but not that low. Maybe she shouldn't have taken out her flail and started to pound at the dough? That had earned her a few uncomfortable stares.

"Oh!" Brightening, Frossa collected the fresh batch of mooncakes in her hands, shoving them up under Alifax's sniffnode. "Here! I made them just for you, Alifax." Her voice rung sweet and smooth, completely unlike the texture of the cake. "Eat them."

"Now."

Alifax had technically been here before, but his supposed familiarity didn't make him any better at making pastries. His proffered platter got only a shake of a head from the greenblooded proprietress. At least it was cooked fine - it was just the, uh, shell part, or whatever, that was messed up. Or something. The mold hadn't set. That. It'd probably help if he was willing to taste test it on his own, wouldn't it? But that wasn't really in the cards for a guy like Alifax. Still, when Frossa offered him hers, he hesitated. Even though, well, it was Frossa.

"Thanks, Frossa," he said, anyway: she was always generous with him. "I might, um..."

One bite couldn't hurt, right?

He took one of the cakes and bit into it hesitantly. It slid down his throat unappetizingly, but in all honesty Alifax didn't care much about flavor - it was cloyingly sweet, but most cakes were.

It was a few seconds later, when he was making an awkward quirk of the lips at Frossa, that he felt something coming up his throat. s**t, s**t, s**t - he turned, and proceeded to deliver the contents of his stomach onto the ground. Whoops.

      ∞ Ephias Sagine

As soon as his fingers even brushed its thick hide, the creature let out a loud squeal. He crashed into it, scrabbling to find purchase. His hands were slick with mud however, and no matter what he did, he could not seem to keep his grip. Moments later, the snoutbeast had bowled him over, and sprinted away again, still screaming bloody murder.

Ephias rose, wiping the remainder of the mud on his trousers. Slowly he turned to face the snoutbeast, squaring his shoulders. His face was dead as usual. Then he locked eyes with the creature. Suddenly the creature froze, its beady gaze fixed on his steely expression. Its little tail shook anxiously.

With a roar, Ephias charged towards the snoutbeast.

      ∞ Ephias Sagine

The snoutbeast's legs pinwheeled wildly, hooves churning the mud, as it let out a terrified squeal. Ephias slammed into it before it could so much as move an inch. The two went rolling over the ground, sending a spray of mud spattering over any bystander that stood too close. As he felt the snoutbeast go beneath him, Ephias reached around to grab hold of the beast. It flailed in his arms, squealing and grunting. This time he did not lose his grip.

The two rolled around in the mud for a moment longer and then it was over. Hauling the snoutbeast into a position where he could still hold onto it, Ephias sat up. After a few seconds the beast calmed, and grunted amicably beside him. Ephias could not help himself; he laughed. His hair was a mess, he was covered in mud, and he held a wiggling snoutbeast in his arms. It was easily the most ridiculous thing he had ever done.

Giving the beast a scratch behind the ears, Ephias looked back towards Etsali and waved.

Still picking hay out of her hair and struggling to cope with the fact that her appearance was disheveled, Elidae was beckoned over to a bartering booth. "Hey there!" She greeted the fellow yellowblood. "Barter, huh?" After he explained his reasons, she looked up in thought, tapping her chin. Then, she gave her lusus a playful grin. "Well... wouldn't hurt to take our chances, right?" There was a peculiar flutter in her bilesack. Something about gambling her chances and playing the game sent thrills up and down her spine. These kind of games entertained her and kept her on her toes. It was somewhat silly and one usually lost more than gained, but... hey, it was for fun, right? The corners of her lips tugged into a tighter grin.

"Yeah, okay! Let's see whatcha got!" She pick what she thought was a good start, and bid the farmer a goodbye with a friendly wave. She'd be back to barter later in hopes to hopefully collect some extra tickets.

Sniff, sniff. With her nose in the air, Elidae closed her eyes, a savory scent wafting in the crisp air. Upon following it, she stumbled upon a most delightful surprise. "Ooooohh!!" Elidae squealed, flapping her hands around with excitement. A community pot was just perfect for bringing all the trolls around, together; she loved the homey feel to the idea. Clasping her hands together, she took a long, dramatic sniff, closing her eyes and enjoying it to its fullest. "This smells wonderful, oh my gosh. I have to add to this!" Though, when she thought about it, she really didn't know what to put in it. Scratching her temple, she took a moment to think before finding an ingredient that looked tasty... kinda smelled off, but...

"Mmmmmmmmnnnnn... It'll be good!" And with that, she dropped it in the simmering broth with a shrug before bounding off to other activities.

      ツ Lutrin Weesil

Lutrin had no more than glanced at the sign, seen the haystack and gone sprinting towards it. She landed with an eruption of hay. “A game for finding things?!” she exclaimed, flinging about fistfuls of hay. Rising she clapped a hand to her chest, expression solemn. “This game was made just for me... A. Master. Finder! She punctuated each word with a pose.

“Come on, dad! We're gonna find everything!” With that, she dove into the haystack and disappeared entirely. The pile shuffled around occasionally, twitching and shifting like some great, hairy beast.

      ∞ Ephias Sagine

Ephias regarded the haystack and the sign in front of it with no small amount of scepticism. Finding a needle in that mess (trolls had clearly already rooted through it) was not just challenging; it was nearly impossible. Unless of course, he applied a magnet to his search, but he got the impression that such tactics might be considered cheating. Perhaps filtering the hay through his hands? The blades of straw were longer than the needle, and if he...

Were Wolly with him, he would let out a depressed sigh and flop down on the floor to mope.

After several moments of analysing the situation, Ephias gave up and decided to play the game as it was meant to be played. Almost hesitantly, he sifted through the straw pile. A minute later, with no success he took to his task more earnestly. As he searched deeper into the haystack, his arms disappeared, then his head, this his shoulders, and upper torso. With a huff, he pulled out again.

He had suddenly become blonde.

      ツ Lutrin Weesil

“It's okay! I can manage it all!” Lutrin told the farmer for perhaps the tenth time after he had inquired if she needed any assistance. “After all! I'm strong.” Dropping her load, she flexed. Then she did a high kick. Then she did a cart wheel. Then she threw a handful of dandelion seeds at him. Magic!

While the farmer was otherwise bedazzled (or just plain confused), Lutrin picked up her sack and continued to haul it across the ground. She might have been strong, but her opponent was a formidable one. Thirty delicious frond blessings all tied up in a bag. They wanted to come home with her, but they were also loathe to leave behind their cute and delectable companions. She understood. She would have felt the way.

“I'll show you a wonderful garden!” Lutrin persuaded them, giving a mighty heave. Suddenly the bag went slipping towards her and she tumbled backwards, right into another troll. Lutrin had hardly gotten to her feet again, when she saw the vast assortment of fruits and vegetables they carried. She was even more amazed by the equally vast assortment she had managed to knock out of their arms and onto the ground.

“WOW! You got so many totatoes!”
