Hemlocke's hands, linked by a spiraling stream of energy, held fast as the spider crashed against the string of force and was repelled by it. Locke hadn't even felt the impact, for all the worrying she'd done. The spider bounced back and rubbed its face with its forelegs for a short time. Hemlocke decided to play with attacking again, and, without dispelling the arc of energy that she'd summoned to block, she rotated her arms to put the stream in line with her enemy, pushing her rear hand forward and sending the energy flying like an arrow toward the spider. She felt a fluid transition between attack and defense that was lacking with other styles. Magic was her true calling, and she was relishing the feeling of warping the world to her will.

Hemlocke 77-2=75/4=18 damage to Spider1 Spider1 5-25=evaded by Hemlocke
The arrow launched forward and pierced the spider mid-leap, penetrating the creature in the middle of its face as Hemlocke stepped aside, allowing the corpse to roll past her as it crashed limply into the ground. She watched as the corpse turned red and exploded into a shower of splintered light, but there was something different, as well. As the shards dissipated, several small points of red light remained floating in the air. Hemlocke wasn't entirely sure what to do with them, so she pulled out her journal, opening it to the tutorial section. Apparently, you just had to... Hemlocke closed the book and looked at the points of light, freeing the talisman from her hip and lifting it to face her unclaimed loot. She willed the motes of light to be absorbed by the trinket, and they flew toward her outstretched hand. The talisman glowed brightly for a moment, and Hemlocke looked at it as the light faded softly away. She could see the motes of light inside the lucent stone, like a smattering of stars inside some sort of galactic aquarium. She smiled and secured the talisman to her belt once more, facing the world with a new type of loot, just the way she liked it.

Hemlocke had murdered a spider. She was happy about that. She hadn't even gotten hit. Which is a good thing, since she didn't very much like suffering from the effects of spider venom. Still, she needed to take a break from spiders. She could not rely on luck to stay alive, and she didn't have the skill necessary to rely on that, so she needed smaller game upon which to practice her craft. She walked away from the spiders' cave and some distance into the trees, hunting for something a little bit safer to combat. She settled on bunnies. They matched her aesthetic. Her pale white skin and hair had earned her the name Hemlocke, and its flower's starburst shape had only further cemented the name when she'd begun to practice magic. Rabbits would give her white clothing, and she could dress herself in materials that would help her survive combat by avoiding damage, rather than just taking damage in a more effective manner. Wait! Movement in the bushes. A small animal trail was being examined by a white rabbit. Locke put her hands together as if nursing a flame, and a small spiral of light gathered in the space between her palms. She pulled her hands apart and let the ball of light float above her hand. With a flick of her fingers, the energy bolt raced forward, drawing a white line in the air between herself and the unsuspecting rabbit.

The tiny bolt of energy crashed into the rabbit and sent its body rolling from the impact. The rabbit came to a halt and began to glow red before it exploded into a shower of shards. The motes of light that had been released from the monster floated in the air, and Hemlocke reached down to her talisman, removing it and holding it out to reclaim the energy as her own. She was profoundly curious as to how this energy was going to be used, but until she had accumulated enough of it, there was no way of knowing, so she would just have to continue murdering creatures until she'd finished this quest. Oh no, the horror. How awful her life was. To be required to battle monsters! What a tragedy. No, seriously, though; where was the next rabbit?

Hemlocke waited for the motes of light to enter her talisman so that she could continue, but then something altogether more interesting happened. Here, interesting can also mean terrifying. The rabbit's exploded corpse --that was interesting in itself-- began to reconstitute. It came back bigger, meaner, and apparently rather angry that it had been callously murdered while it was sniffing at things with its cute little nose. Its nose was less cute now. Locke was intrigued. But then she was defensive. Because that ******** was about to attack her. And now, the strongest creature she'd ever fought was going to be a god-damned bunny. Clapping her hands together, the mage focused energy to her palms. She pulled her hands apart to spread the energy into a whip that connected the fingers of her two hands, and prepared to defend herself, using the whip as a shield. "Well, aren't you precious? It's really a shame that I'm going to have to kill you. You'd make for an entertaining live capture." As the rabbit leaped at her, Hemlocke drew the line taut, and stepped aside, sending the animal bouncing away at an angle as it dug its claws in to slide to a stop. "Huh. It's a bit like a bullfight, with teeth instead of horns, and trees instead of bloodthirsty audience members. It's hard to say which would be more enjoyable, honestly."

Anna-Mia had reconciled what she was doing wrong with her technique. Going over what had gone both right and wrong had made her appreciate what she needed to be doing more. no sooner did she make this revelation than she went out into the woods again to search for Bunnies. Her technique had gotten better, so she felt like any bunny that came her way would be no problem for her. And that's when she came across another girl fighting a bunny that her brother likely would have described as an "abomination". She however squeed involuntarily, blushing furiously afterward. She pulled out a piece of bait and began to throw it at the hell-bunny "I couldn't help overhear that you wanted to capture Mr. Bunny here. I can do that if you like?" She was still kinda shy, but hopefully this person would be more immediately pleasant than that last guy. She was sure he was a good person at heart, but he did grate on her a bit.

RR1 55-87=parried by Hemlocke Anna-Mia 195-27=168/4=42 friendship to RR1
Hemlocke parried the monster rabbit, and as did, she heard a small voice come from the woods, followed by a lump of... --Is that ******** candy?-- that struck the giant bunny, causing it to become enveloped by blue light and to collapse into a saccharine singularity before exploding and littering the area with blue shards. That wasn't what caught Hemlocke's eye, though. There, floating in the air, were blue motes of light. "So there are other colors! This is wonderful!" Pulling out her talisman, Hemlocke began absorbing the particles of magic left suspended in the air before they got any clever ideas and started despawning. It was at that point that she remembered that something had dispatched the colossal rabbit, and she looked around to see what had done so. She spotted a girl a few years younger than herself some distance away, and finally processed what the voice from the woods had said before. She didn't see a weapon in the girl's hands. Instead, she saw a bag of bait. Interesting... "That was awesome! How did you do that!? And, also, what did you do!?"

Anna-Mia had Discovered that she had in fact gotten better in her technique as the bait shot like a rocket into the back of the bunny, bursting it into blue shards. She sighed as the girl asked her about her abilities. "I guess you're not from where I'm from either...just like the man with the dagger." She perked up a bit. "I tamed the new bunny friend with bait. If he doesn't stand back up like my brother says they can...and it seems like this one did already...Then he'll either be able to follow as a helper, or turn into a crystal heart like this." and with that she pulled out her Perfect Gloomweave Rabbit Heart to show the mysterious stranger. "But enough about me, what was that thing you were using to gather up those shard thingies?"

Hemlocke nodded "I'm certainly not from around here, that's for sure. I am training to be a lightcaster. I used to dabble in magic, but for some reason, all of my old spells don't work in this place. This talisman lets me control the powers that exist in this world, and use them as a sort of magic. Those little motes of light are apparently materials that I can use to get better. Of course, I haven't really done much of it, so I'm not sure on the specifics of how lightcasting works or even what it actually is, but it seems that the people in this wood just give you tools and send you out to figure out how to use them, so I'm sort of flying by the seat of my pants here.
So you're a beastmaster? I've heard about those. You tame the animals that live here. That's incredible! You must have a lot of patience.
Anyway; thank you for your help. I don't know if I could have made it out of that fight by myself. I don't have much experience with any of this. It almost feels like I'm having to learn how to walk and talk all over again." Hemlocke looked down at her talisman, where she could see the blue motes of light dancing with the red ones. The vast majority of the space inside the stone was completely vacant, though; there was an incredible amount of room left inside it. Hemlocke flipped open her journal, which she kept strapped to her hip, and checked her quest progress. It looks like she still needed a bit more. The reds and blues didn't seem to add to the same total.

Anna-Mia nodded in agreement as the girl talked. "I agree with that last part. I don't really understand this light stuff at all. Back home, I just talked with creatures and gave them things over time. I actually fed them, instead of just pelting them like this." She looked off to the side, tugging pensively on her left pigtail "It just doesn't feel the same to befriend them this way. All critters are loveable, why can't I just talk them down like I used to? If my family could see this..." She shook her head, blushing slightly. "Sorry. I'm not that used to talking to people, so I kinda blurt things out sometimes. Anyways I'm just glad I could help. As much as I love all critters I know that not all of them WANT to be loved right away."

Hemlocke nodded. "I'm not sure that thing wanted to be loved by anything. But I have to agree with you: it does seem somewhat strange to just hit things until they see your point of view. Sort of counter-intuitive." Hemlocke looked down at her journal to check the time. She needed a tactful way to excuse herself from this conversation, it appeared. "Hey. Are you around here often? I'm going to have to go take a bit of a break for a while. But if you are around, it might be fun to team up and make a go of things together. If for no other reason than that you seem to be better adapted to this world than me. I guess what I'm asking is if you wouldn't mind if I tagged along with you... If it wasn't too much trouble" The shyft had no problem admitting that the younger girl was superior. Vainglorious pride had no place in a rogue's arsenal. You had to know when you were outmatched, and how to make the most of a situation. Teamwork was almost always the better choice... For the weaker of the two. For the stronger it was a bit trickier.

The shyft shook her head and laughed. Yeah, a name would probably be good. "Oh, yeah. I'm Hemlocke. It's nice to meet you, Anna-Mia. I'm sure we'll run into each other again. How big can the Gloomwood be?" Hemlocke shook the girl's hand and wandered back into the trees to do business elsewhere. She needed to take a short break, and then she'd be back to gathering motes of light. She wondered if the blue motes only came from monster taming. She perused the journal for information on the colors of light that were present in the world, and found that blue light was the color of friendship. She wondered what kind of spectacular effects could be achieved by utilizing the different colors of the spectrum. She was certain that she would figure it out eventually, though. As she went through the trees on her way back to the encampment, Hemlocke saw another rabbit. Waste not, want not. She drew a line in the air with her finger, a tendril of light appearing and following the digit. She swirled it around and pointed at her target, releasing her hold on the magic and letting the energy fly.

Direct hit! Hemlocke realized that she'd planted her feet and stabilized her structure to launch a more powerful attack. While it had worked, she was cautious about the idea of sacrificing her mobility. She had lived and died by her fleetness of foot in the past, and she was loathe to change that now. It was a good tool to have in your belt, though. She'd certainly hit a lot harder than she'd thought she would by focusing more intently. If her clarity of mind was what decided the efficacy of her attacks, then she'd just have to learn to move and shoot at the same time. That would be an engaging challenge. Hemlocke lifted her talisman and made to absorb the energy left behind by the rabbit.
