((S'okay.))

Shinichi grumbled and slowly opened his eyes, shocked at the realisation that he had overslept and in turn, had to be carried by Kohki-san. The boy tapped the older boy's shoulders and forced his way down. How embarrassing! Based on the team's not so great expressions, he guessed that they had failed the test, but it was an indeed difficult one. This, in turn, must mean that Aya's team was way ahead of them, or that he and his group members were pathetically weak. Shinichi bit his lip and stood, following close behind Kohki-san and Myobi-san.

Myobi nodded at Kohki as he picked up Shinichi. But truth be told, she was vastly relieved when the boy woke up. They would need all the help they could get on the missions. As the boys went ahead, she brought up the rear, as always. She was still a little depressed at failing the mission. Koro would be disappointed in them. Disappointed in her...She picked up the pace, refusing to think about it. They would ace the next test and be fine. Maybe they would even beat Sumire's team!

Shinichi arrived at the Great Plains, relieved as he smelled that wondrous aroma again. It seemed like Kusagakure had started a market for selling the special plants around the grasslands. If worst comes to worst and he would have to buy the katana, Shinichi thought that picking valuable plants might be the best way to save up for that. The thought was depressing, however, as it would probably take years before he had enough money. But before that, he had something else to finish up. Shinichi dropped down to push up position and continued the interrupted exercise.

He pushed himself up and slowly bent his elbows until his chest was once again just an inch or two from the ground. Shinichi wondered if Aya had gotten anything from Smi. Now that he thought about it, he hadn't seen her since the beginning of the failed survival test. She had probably already taken her genin exams and passed as the top student, although Shinichi hoped that his written test had surpassed hers. He was on the higher end of Koro-sensei's class, but always losing to her. Shinichi gritted his teeth and pushed on the ground, sending his body upwards. He won't lose to her!

Shinichi frowned as his body started to feel the slightest strain of fatigue. It wasn't anything big, just a warning that he could become tired if he continued much longer. Unfortunately, that's exactly what he planned to do. He lowered himself and repeated the motion of pushing his body upwards. Judging by appearance only, it seemed that he and Aya were equally strong. However, there was some unknown factor that made her hit him both harder than he could manage to hit her. There was something missing in all of this, but that something seemed to prevent him from discovering its nature.

Okay, that was one more. Shinichi pondered the missing element in Aya's success. It had to either be skill alone or the fact that she was the Kusakage-sama's daughter. There was no resemblance in mother or daughter, but many families turned out that way. Shinichi grunted softly and lowered his body. He had gained a pound or two of muscle since the first day at the Academy, but his body was still thinner than it should be. His parents constantly teased him about his figure, with his mother overfeeding him. Bah, Shinichi had refused the food and instead spent time training. He was healthy enough anyway.

One more success. He was almost at halfway now. Shinichi held the push up position, his head looking straight ahead. His arms tired more quickly this way, but that must mean that it was more effective. He stiffened his elbow and waited the time out, fully aware that his arms grew sorer and sorer by the second. If he was going to become top shinobi, Shinichi would have to push himself harder than ever, never pausing in his training. He would have to learn many powerful techniques and never give in, no matter what dreary thing lay ahead.

This was easier than he had imagined, but long and fulfilling nonetheless. Shinichi lowered himself and did another push up. He was fast and proficient at using ranged weapons, but he needed to also hone in on his katana skills. To do so would mean the possibility of dealing damage even beyond the Dodging Palm Jutsu and only a strong person could so great damage. Shinichi closed his eyes and concentrated on the task at hand.

Shinichi felt his arms wobble as he lowered them. This was taking longer than he had expected. He breathed in through his nose, wincing as he sensed blood. Still, he was fairly unharmed and could continue. Shinichi pushed himself to the ground and tried to go back up. Maybe he would do something more exciting next time, instead of the beneficial, but boring pushups. Perhaps that was why Aya turned out to be more powerful than he.

At least the vast majority of his push ups had gone well. Shinichi licked his dry lips and settled in again. He realised that it wasn't his exhaustion that was slowing him down, but rather the sheer repetition of this exercise and its length. His arms were sore, but in no way was it related to fatigue. Unlike some of the other training he did where he himself was injured, this, like the Dodging Palm Jutsu, was based off of sheer perseverance. Maybe that was why it was popular among Omi and the other academy sensei.

As the physical training wore him down, Shinichi's mind drifted to his skills compared to Aya. Yes, that was it! She was much more intelligent and could learn faster than he could. Those books would need to be read once more, no matter how much he rather preferred to train here instead.

Ah, he was almost done, just one more to go. Shinichi grunted and painstakingly lowered himself, this time faster than the others. He gritted his teeth and steadied himself for the push up. It was strange that it was called so, since he had to push down on the ground in order to lift himself up. At least, that was what some foreign scientist had concluded. Shinichi's mind cleared for a moment, then tried to push himself up, straining his arms to prevent them from wobbling.

Burn-out
I had the students keep burning their chakra to build up more chakra stamina. They must hit exactly 0 to finish the training successfully. If they went into the negatives, the student would pass out and would have to be revived by their teacher and rest until their cp is recovered.

Shinichi rose from his push up position, wincing as his arms gasped for breath. As much as he wanted to start searching for the plants, going through the genin exams had taught him that his chakra endurance was much too low. On that note, so was his physical endurance. He pressed his hands together in the seal of the ram and directed his chakra outwards. If running until you dropped was a way to increase endurance, burning his chakra should increase that.
