wild wolf king [i don't have to attack right? i can just wait and try to dodge?] ((This is a regular attack, but if one tries to counter-attack it causes flinching. Which is something that can't normally happen. So, you can defend or counter-attack the choice is yours))

"Quick Choco get out of the way!" Jason yelled out in desperation. The attack looked like it was a very powerful one if if it wasn't dodged it wouldn't end to well.
Choco saw the attack coming and realized that it was going to be a strong attack. He knew that he would definitely need to dodge this attack or at the least keep to a small graze. He struggled to dislodge his fangs from the Sandshrew's arm since his fangs were dug in deeper than before.

Nick slowly entered the Battle Room. He rolled a single, small pokeball around his fingers nervously, his heart beating loudly in his ears and the butterflies in his stomache pleading to escape. He took a deep breath, hoping to end this soon.

The shadows seemed to pull in closer as Nick entered the room, shapes scarcely visible moving about in the darkness. A sound greeted the boy...laughter. It began as a snicker, but slowly, surely, it grew into a boisterous cackle!
"GWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! So another lost little lamb wanders into the wolfs den!" The voice laughed hysterically "...best run away child, here you face things you only thought existed in Nightmares. GWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!"
A moment of pause followed. Deathly silence perhaps more unnerving then the voices cackling. "If you still intend to proceed I will ask...shall you take the Tutorial, or shall we skip to the bloodshed?"

As the voice tried to use intimidation on him, Nick was able to focus more. He shook his head, focusing on the words he was hearing and allowing the butterflies in his stomach to settle a bit.
He expanded the pokeball in his right hand to full size and held it out, pointing into the darkness (at nothing in particular) and announced, "I am not afraid of some faceless enemy and I will not flee." Nick hesitated a bit, still nervous, yet thoughtful of his situation, "However, I will not run wrecklessly into danger either. I choose the tutorial."
He began to feel the butterflies returning. As they returned, his hand began to fidget with the large pokeball once more, turning it around and around in his palm without thinking.

The ground beneath the child's feet began to shake, the floorboards beginning to groan...no, something else was groaning. Cracks appeared in the ground not far off from the child, rays of a darkened blue energy shinning upward as if some sort of light was just below.
A slimy tentacle-like appendage thrust up from the ground, pushing the crack wider. Seven more soon followed, a pair of yellow eyes appearing in the brightened depths. Slowly a Pokemon rose up from the floor. It's normally lavender body seeming a little off colour, various parts of the Pokemon's body almost seemed to rot where it stood. It was a Lileep, an ancient Pokemon said to exist thousands of years ago; one like none the boy would have ever seen, or likely would again.
The Pokemon let out a horrific groan as it awaited the voices command.
"Release your Pokemon, and we shall begin! GWAHAHAHA!!!" The voice cackled. He wasn't doing it to intimidate the child, he was simply insane. "Oh, and make sure it drinks this...if you wish it to survive that is!" The voice called out again, a vile of strange glowing blue liquid rising from the floor at the child's feet.
Lileep [F] Lv 2 Nature: Modest Stats: HP:15/PP:18/ATK:6/DEF:8/SPD:6/SP-ATK:8/SP-DEF:9 MOVES: - Constrict - Mega Drain - Astonish [Battle Basics - Part 1]
[At the beginning of a battle both trainer's will post their Pokemon's stats as I have above. To make this quite clear due to mistakes in the past, when I say post your Pokemon's stats I mean all of it. Not just the part labeled stats, but name, level, nature, moves, EXP, the whole kitten caboodle.]

Nick took a step back, looking at this amazing, yet horrifying pokemon in disbelief. His heart started to be rapidly once more, but he nodded with confidence. He tapped the pokeball in his hand twice with the ring on his third finger, making a metalic "clink clink", a signal to his Onix that it was go time. He threw out the pokeball and it unleashed the huge Onix, which roared, hungry for a battle.
Onix Name: Arthur LVL: 2 Nature: Hasty Hp: 14 pp: 16 att: 7 Def: 10 spd: 8 sp att: 6 sp def: 7 Moves: Mud Sport, Tackle, Bind, Harden EXP: 0/100
Nick picked up the blue potion at his feet. "Arthur, please drink this. I won't allow for you to meet an untimely demise due to any oversight of mine." He said this sincerely, but strongly, trying to get his feelings through to his friend.
The Onix curled its body downward and drank the mysterious potion from Nick's hand. They looked at each other, each telling the other to do their best without needing words. After Arthur finished the potion, he curled back around and stared intimidatingly at the Lileep.

[Battle Basics - Part 2]
[Alright, here at Akumu Academy we use a Turn Based combat system. Simply put when one Pokemon Attacks, the other will Defend. Due to a variety of mistakes made by new students in the past, allow me to make this clear.]
[Now say you make a post to Attack, that means I'll make a post Defending. Afterward you will make a post to Defend, and I'll Attack.]
[When you Defend you do NOT use any of your Pokemon's moves. You simply write out them dodging, blocking, or attempting to distract the opponent, depending on what move they're using to attack you. When Attacking you need to say somewhere in the post what the move is. Whether that comes in the form of the Trainer shouting the attack, or saying that's what the attack is after describing the actual action is up to you.]
[The Pokemon with the highest SPD stat will take the first Attack turn. In this case that would be you. In the event of two Pokemon having the same SPD, they'll attack at the same time without consequences. Whoever wins that Attack will then Defend.]
[Whether you attack or defend, each turn we will both roll 1 D20. This is called an Accuracy Roll. As the name implies it decided if an attack hits or misses. The mechanics are very straight forward.]
[Now let's say you roll a 15 for attack, and I roll a 4. The attack would hit, and damage calculation would follow. Now opposite to that, if you rolled the 4, and I rolled the 15, your attack would miss and no damage would be dealt.]
[The dice are located under Post Action. I'll explain Damage Calculation in my next post.]
[Any questions?]
Hardly seeming to move from where it stood, the Lileep's roots began to dig into the floorboards, entwining themselves with who knows what beneath them. The plant Pokemon was taking a rather simple defense by rooting herself to the spot. Briefly the Lileep fell back, swayed forward, and wobbled, showing off it's naturally springy and bendable body. The Onix would be hard pressed to do much damage easily.
"Whenever you're ready...boy. Gwaahahahaha!!!" The voice cackled ominously. It would seem the first move belonged to Nick and his Onix.

[None as of yet.]
Nick smirked. An opening? Foolish move. "Arthur, use Bind!" He pointed strongly towards the Lileep.
Arthur moved quickly into the battle, attempting to wrap itself around the unusual pokemon.
Both trainer and pokemon had their confidence set high.

[One thing I failed to mention. When both Attacker and Defender roll the same number, it goes in favor of the defender by default.]
The Onix would know immediately that something was wrong however; there was no crunch, nor squeal of pain. Surely had the creature been caught it would have produced some sort of sound!
Amidst the darkened depths of the Rock-Types coils, a pair of bright yellow eyes would gleam. A moment later the colossal Pokemon would find himself face to face with the little Lileep. It would seem that, as the Onix had begun to bind her, the Lileep had actually stretched out her stem to a height matching her opponent! Smaller then the space left by the Onix's crushing coils, the Lileep had left her opponent without something to actually damage!
The tentacle like vines of the ancient Pokemon wriggled as she looked at her opponent. Abruptly her vines shot out in all directions, shaking wildly as they became consumed with a ghostly purple aura. Eyes glowing a bright yellow, the Lileep let out a horrendous wail and shoved her face in the direction of the Onix. She was attempting Astonish him! [Battle Basics - Part 3]
[Next I'll cover damage calculation.]
[When calculating damage we use the following formula.]
(Attackers Roll - Defenders Roll) + (ATK - DEF) = Damage
[To better explain I'll give an example. Lets say for this attack I rolled a 15, and you rolled a 5 for Defense.]
(15 - 5) + (6 - 10) = (10 + (-4) = (10 - 4) = 6 DMG
Arthur HP: 8

[How do you calculate if astonish makes the other pokemon flinch?]
Arthur instinctively pulled back towards Nick, who called to his pokemon, "Watch out! It looks like an Astonish attack!"
[...I would be able to tell if it's an astonish attack, right?]

((Well your character can't physically see the Lileep's stats or moves, so at best he can 'Guess' that it's an Astonish attack.))
((To find out if a move succeeds in causing a status effect go to the Information Center. You'll find a link there leading to the list of status effects and their mechanics. In this case it does. In the event of a Flinch the opposing Pokemon is forced to Defend again.))
(15 - 3) + (6 - 10) = 8 DMG
Arthur HP: 6
The Lileep's face would smash into Athur's before the Onix would even have time to register the child's warning. The key to a good Astonish was always that element of surprise.
Following up on it's attack, the Lileep's vines would begin lengthening rapidly, reaching out and wrapping themselves around any section of the Onix they could manage to grasp. Slowly the vines began to tighten, seeking to Constrict the Onix!

Nick squeezed the pokeball in his hand tightly. Not good! This was clearly a grass move and Arthur would NOT hold out against another strong attack! "Arthur! Dodge it or you'll be done in!" Nick yelled with authority, trying to hold back panic in his voice.
[If constrict works, do you get to keep using constrict a few times (I assume calculated similarly to how flinch is done) or is it only once?]

((You can also find a list of links leading to information on move mechanics in the Information Section. This would be the entry for constrict.))
294. CONSTRICT = Con. Type Tough = regular attack formula + 5 lowers speed of opponent by one
Constricts to inflict pain, and may lower speed.
((Now two things. One, stop just yelling things at the Onix and actually type it responding to your trainer! Secondly, Constrict is a Normal-Type move and always has been.))
(14 - 12) + (6 - 10) = -2 DMG
Arthur HP:6
No escape would be possible beneath the Lileep's assault, but neither would there be damage. The ancient plant's attack proved ineffective against the rock hard body of the Onix. Simultaneously using it's vines as both arms and legs, the Lileep pulled herself away from her opponent, putting some distance between them.
Once away, she began rooting herself into the floor much like before.
[Battle Basics - Part 4]
[Time to teach you about Critical Hits and Fumbles.]
[Now as you're likely well aware, the lowest point of the dice is 1, and the highest is 20.]
[When you roll a 20 you will receive a Critical. A Critical will add 1 to your Accuracy Roll during damage calculation for either Attack or Defense, depending on which turn you rolled it.]
[Opposite to that, if you roll a 1 you receive a Fumble. This will subtract 1 from your Roll during damage calculation for either Attack or Defense, depending on when it was rolled.]
[For example. Say you rolled a 20 while attacking. For the rest of the battle you would receive +1 to your Attack Rolls. So, say your next Attack you rolled a 16, that would then become a 17.]
[Any questions?]
