The fact that Ariane was ruffling his hair again was a good sign, mostly because it meant that she was at least sort of forgiving of him. Sort of. This time Gale didn't bat her hand away, his mildly sulky look still on the floor.

"I hate feeling useless." His gaze flickered upwards when Candace spoke, and he let out a derisive snort, shaking his head.

"I'm not fighting with her, and I'm not a child," he answered, strangely demurely especially since he had been more energetic with Ariane, and then he turned around. Being treated like he was some sort of pathetic hindrance by one person was bad enough; being scolded by someone else for the same thing was even worse, especially in the predicament they were in now. He was fifteen years old; that was not a kid. Hadn't he earned the right to stand here, like Ariane said, just as much as the rest of them?

Gale clamped his mouth shut, intent on keeping any comments to himself for the remainder of the mission.

Focus on the task at hand. Ignore everything else. We're here to fight, here to learn. That's it. No excuses.

No regrets.

Cass shook her head and snapped up from her daze, resuming to flip through her textbook a bit. She looked to Candace when she spoke up about the books;

"Well you know what? Right now they are out there catching up on their soaps. So if we're not in immediate danger we might as well see if there is anything we can glean from the information we've been given. We don't have an adult to ask, and if we have what we need to survive right here with us, then we should use it and stop letting those things hunt us!"

She flipped a few more pages, frowned a bit, then flipped a few more.

She looked up at Hanna and shook her head. Cassandra paused after a minute.

"How about some of us watch the door, and others of us each take a certain range of numbers in the book each and flip through it? It'll be easier than all of us re-reading the same sections at the same time to not get the information that isn't there?" she paused, crinkling her nose. "That makes sense, right?"

She hoped it did and that her wording wasn't flawed. The logic was there, really!

Knowledge -and- teamwork!

Cassandra knew they wouldn't survive this without thinking like a group.

Bix had, his whole life, wanted life to be more like a movie. He wanted to find that person who would fight against convention for what was right, laugh in the face of danger. Now, with life on the line, two of the hunters were kissing. IT WAS JUST LIKE A MOVIE.

Some were getting books out and others were ready to charge out into the open. When the dark skinned girl asked who objected he stepped forward, He wasn't much of a jokester but he suddenly couldn't help it.

"Well if we are ready to go.. If anyone.. ANYONE needs to kiss before we go. I am totally available.." If he could have gotten heart eyes and smoochy face, he would have. Bix could ready the looks on some of the girl's faces though and he flushed red and ducked back.

"Those using guns need to try and cover those rushing in with bats.." He wasn't really a strategist but it seemed to make sense. "But I am ready..." Sure. Right. With shaking hands? "I'm ready when everyone else is."

He was interested to hear what the handbook may say but didn't find that reading was a priority right now.

Any sour grapes were quashed by the pounding at the door. The glares in his direction went unnoticed as gazes inevitably shifted toward a matter more pressing than his lack of a positive attitude. Scott raised his bat, uneasy about having to put his faith in a pair of hinges. He sincerely doubted the quality of craftsmanship on an island whose denizens couldn’t prevent themselves from turning into flesh feeding sins against nature. Something about an insatiable hunger for flesh and blood failed to inspire confidence.

As the dust settled, the sigh of relief remained inside Scott’s lungs. The tip of his bat hit the floor as he shifted his weight against the weapon, allowing his entire body to sag for a moment. The feeling of giving up beneath all that weight – the monsters outside, the possibility of dying in a room full of strangers, the prospect that this would be his life even if he did survive – was immensely satisfying. He could only imagine the building’s walls felt the same way, wanting to crumble beneath all those battering limbs.

When Scott looked up, he was met with Cassandra and Marcus kissing. The sight filled him with more despair than even that of an entire horde bearing down on him. “Really?” His tone was not sickened, or incredulous. Merely sad. “Are we really at the point where we don’t want to die as virgins?” He looked to Candace, who seemed intent on fighting the monsters with nothing more than piss, vinegar, and a can-do spirit. He found the sentiment admirable, if not entirely plausible.

But the fact of the matter was that they had nothing else to face their situation with. Even as the romantic couple quelled their urges with their textbooks, Scott doubted how helpful they’d prove. He wouldn’t at all be surprised if their “manuals” just turned out to be copies of Unlocking Your Potential for Greatness or Five Simple Steps to Emotional Healing or some other such self-help nonsense. He didn’t exactly trust the provisions provided by an institution that had sent him out to die. Twice.

“Two minutes, sure,” he said, echoing Hanna but looking at Candace. Scott wasn’t a big fan of sports. He did not believe in the power of comebacks. He had only ever had a passion for chess, a game where victory was deigned by a player’s opening moves. Any reversals of fortune were usually a result of an opponent’s oversight. “That should be more than enough time to ********.”

"Yes, elder~ I was just having a talk with a team member~" She grinned at Candace before looking down at the gun held firmly in her grip. The backpack slung over her shoulder felt heavier all of a sudden, however, and the realization that she had no idea what was going to happen after the door is opened sunk in. Heh, a door... Her expression quickly changed to one that showed that yes, she was ready to fight again.

That was, until Bix's outburst. Oh no, he didn't...!

Except he did.

"... You are the comic relief character in this horror movie," She pointed at him with the hand clutching onto her gun, loaded with bullets from Jude's gun. She was grinning as she said that, and the safety lock was still locked, but it was still dangerous to point something like a gun at anyone... Except Ariane was probably doing it on purpose, "You and Before."

She looked at the girl who had been kissing some guy before this, and grinned at her, "Smart... Dividing the reading and sharing info would speed things up." It was something to consider, if they insist on reading the manuals provided. She didn't look through them... Mostly because studying was something she had only done to please her parents.

Ugh.

When Ennea had recovered somewhat with help from Madison and Davey, Jordan gave her shoulder a quick squeeze in return and released her. She was looking considerably better, enough so that she looked able to stand on her own now.

Suddenly, there was a bat being held out to him - Hanna, that was her name. He nodded gratefully, accepting it, and dug the gun out of his pack, handing it to her in return. "Use it in good health," he said, half a smile quirking the corner of his mouth.

... He took one brief, disbelieving glance at the two who'd decided that this was a good time to make out. Well, adrenaline running high, he supposed. It could make people do weird things.

He listened to Robert's outburst, Candace's speech, Hanna's answer, mulling over their responses to the situation. Two more minutes, huh? "Those of us who are still in good shape should take the front," he spoke up. Davey's point, and a good one, but it hadn't been spoken loudly enough to reach the rest of the room. "If we can break out, we should keep the injured in the center of the group; I say we should go for the entry point, where we landed." He paused briefly, considering his words. "Candace is right. This is a test. But I'm guessing that the pass condition for this one is survival. We're not equipped to take those things on - and maybe that's the point. Use what we have, and don't die. It's not failing if we get away. If we get away, we'll have the time to heal up, prepare adequately, and take those things on on OUR terms when we're ready." He looked to Robert. "We might not be the predators here, but we're sure as hell not prey. Prey runs blindly without thinking. We've got brains, and we can work together."

His hand stung. He looked down to find that his grip had tightened on the bat, enough that his nails were digging into his palm. He made himself relax. "I'm scared," he admitted. "But I'm not going to let that stop me from doing something about it."

A strange noise permeated the walls inside the trainees' safehouse. It sounded like a strange grinding noise, a scuffling, hollow echoing sound.

Mere seconds later, what seemed like an overgrown vine burst from the center of the room. The vine split into two, revealing a jagged five foot row of salivating teeth, the monstrosity shook back and forth, attempting to impale the closest trainee.

From behind the students on the other side of the door something else was also trying to get open. Loud whumps could be heard against the side of the wall, clear, ringing, consistent. The wall was slowly giving in as well.

((PHASE: THERE IS NO HOPE 25 HP

- Use your bats OR guns to attack the creature in the center of the room. While it does not spit acid, its range is pretty much half the room, getting near it even for a good shot will deal 5 damage to your character per turn. (That means YOU take 5 damage every time you choose to attack)
- You can also choose, INSTEAD of attacking to use bandages.
- Your character can attack TWO TIMES this round, but they better get ready for what is on the other side of the wall...
- Dont forget to state your char's attack value/heal value, as well as total HP per turn))

Marcus didn't look up from his reading. "You know." He said out loud to those in the room. "A door isn't the ONLY way monsters and zombies have been shown to get into old abandoned buildings. Haven't you seen the ones where they bust through the walls? Sure the door is easiest, but-" Life could imitated B-movie related art. It really could, and Marcus was now officially wanting to shoot every horror movie director ever because god ******** damn it this was like a b-rated horror film and he did not like it.
|Slamming the manual shut, he shoved it back into the bag. "********!" Marcus did not like surprises. So when he grabbed his weapon he reacted with blind instinct.

Time was, it seemed, officially up. "s**t!" Jordan yelled, and spun on instinct to take a good hard swing at the thing that had so rudely interrupted their planning.

His bat connected, and connected solidly, smacking into the corrupted flesh; but there was no way he could escape the toothy tentacle that slammed into his side a moment later. He gritted his teeth. He could take it.

Ugh, fine. Candace begrudgingly released the door and stood with her back to it, arms crossed and foot tapping. Immature? Sure, but this was stupid. They didn't have time for this. Knowledge was not power when you didn't have time to study a manual because it could get you killed. Was there a possibility nothing was behind the door? Perhaps. But Candace didn't want to take risks. It pleased her to hear some people even agreed with her. Reading was something you did ahead of time, not during the test. She pointed at Marcus as he made his point. "And that is just another reason we should get out, not sit around and study. Me? I love studying as much as anyone, but now is not the time for it!" She sighed irritation, ruffling her own hair.

The noise that did not belong to them made her heart stop and her eyes widen, gripping her gun tightly and just staring ahead. Wh-where did that just come from? Before she could even ask, however, a giant ******** Audrey II look-a-like popped up through the floor.

She. ********. TOLD THEM.

Candace unlocked the safety on her gun and aimed directly at the vine monster on first instinct, gasping as the walks began to shake. This building was going to collapse on them! She knew they should have just left! She knew it! Ugh! She growled and raised her gun again to aim it at the creature, pulling the trigger and...

...Candace hates guns.

Cass was broken from la-la land immediately. s**t! She nearly tripped over Marcus when she backed up, looking up at the man. Her eyes went wide as she looked back at the thing in the middle of the room.

"Okay, maybe the soaps got cancelled." she said quickly, humor regained in the same manner she'd been amused by earlier. It probably helped that she had her gun again (she wasn't sure how it had reloaded), checking it in her hands before she took a look around the room to see how everybody else was responding to the sudden CREATURE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM.

She then looked to Marcus again, just for him to have just attacked the thing.

"Hey!" she said, though part of her immediately realized that she had bandages and needed to use them, her brain was already doing its hyperdrive thing.

Cass fired, REALLY HOPING she didn't miss and hit someone else.

The shaking walls had Candace trembling, but she fought it off as best as she could. It was just like that room. The walls were going to close in on them; she'd missed them completely crushing those inside, but she'd been there fighting when it was a 6 by 6 foot room. It..it was unsettling. It wad deja vu. But she couldn't let herself give in to it! This gun was not meant for the people in the room with her, only the vine. She pursed her lips and held the gun with both hands to steady herself, giving a tiny noise of unhappiness whenever the walls shook and creaked.

She closed her eyes, hoped for the best and shot...

There was a loud TWANG as the bullet shot one of the walls. Ugh. She missed again.

The boxer had to turn away from the two that were making out like it was some sort of romance horror movie. In front to everyone present, he really did have to avert his eyes from the two before they decided to go any further.

Leon was fiddling with the bandages while listening with half an ear to Marcus and his paranoia. "Yeah yeah yeah focus on the d-" True to cinema plotlines, something just had to go wrong and give this real life movie more of a plot twist. "You just had to say it didn't you?" he snarled out before grabbing the bat from hit pack and charging at the surprise enemy. "You might of well have said What else can go Wrong!?"

Why did this situation suddenly seem like something out of one of those old black and white horror films that Gale's uncle used to watch late at night when he thought Gale was asleep in bed?

There was an odd noise; eerie and unnerving. Gale took an involuntary step backwards.

"What the - "

He didn't quite get to finish his sentence. Something big, green, and monstrous erupted from the center of the floor, exploding outwards. Gale caught a glimpse of dripping teeth, a gaping mouth, and his hand grappled for the gun in his bag, yanking it out and pointing it directly at the creature.

Unfortunately for Gale, his aim was completely off and the shot went far and wide. Not only that, but before he had time to even swear, one of the monster's flailing vines caught him across the stomach, and Gale found himself being flung sideways, crashing into the wall. It hurt - a lot - and Gale spat blood, gritting his teeth as he glared at the monster.

"Stupid friggin b*****d - "
