 Glen locked Alice in a tower away from everyone else~ But somehow the twins were born and both sealed away in the same spot~ Lacie died protecting Glen. and Glen died trying to revive her.

Or Alice is Lacie but using magic has been split into two and reborn, one still trapped in the abyss as the sacrifice demanded and the other the result of what happened.

-tilts head- Who's that? Cheshire thinks the addition of the mages helps tie the story together but doesn't like the idea of putting magic into it.

She's a clone of Shinji's mother is the long and short of it. But they don't TELL you about her until the middle of the series.
I agree on that... although it really seems the ONLY thing the mages can do is do that seal.
