How will I know the right way to love you?The fact that she was being sarcastic didn't pass Jay by. But he took the question seriously. "I really miss hanging out with you." He glanced up at her and met Charlie's eyes. "I miss your company and your toughness and..."
Your laugh. Your smile. Your strength.
He cleared his throat. Way to get emotional, Jay. "I miss you."

Charlie shook her head. But when his eyes met with hers she couldn't help but find herself lost in them.
A lump in her throat formed and she pulled her gaze from his. "No. You don't. You have Maddie. She's the sexy, popular, perfect girlfriend for you."
She looked over at him. "Don't get all mushy on me Jay. I tried that, you turned me down. And I'm with Landon now." She stood up and walked over to the windows, peeking out. Nobody there yet.

How will I know the right way to love you?For a moment, Jay was convinced that he had her full attention. Then, Charlie denied it and rose up to go look out the window. He swallowed the lump that was forming in his throat. He rose to his feet and strolled to her side.
"I'm not trying anything," he murmured into her ear. Jay blinked and smiled slightly. "You can't tell me that you didn't miss me either."

Charlie felt her skin rise in goosebumps as he came up behind her. His lips brushed against her ear and she forced her eyes to remain focused outside.
"I didn't say I don't miss you." She closed her eyes and swallowed again, finding it hard to move.
But she pulled away from him and turned to look at him.
"Jay, stop. Please. This isn't fair."
Why was he doing this now? She didn't want this. For the most part, she was happy.

Charlie shook her head. "Stop being so damned dramatic Jay. I didn't tell you to leave." She grabbed his arm and shook her head.
Her eyes caught his again and she flashed back to their stupid childish games and the 'fights' they had.
But she pulled her gaze from his eyes and her hand slid down his arm to grasp his fingers.
Which she soon released too.

How will I know the right way to love you?Her soft hand smoothed down his arm. That got Jay's heart racing. Jay slowly turned to look at his friend. Charlie's eyes met his. Her hand grasped his fingers. She soon released his hand. Jay caught her hand in his again and squeezed it gently.
He cracked a slight smile. "I don't really wanna leave, but... I just assumed that's what you wanted."
Her catching his arm betrayed what she wanted.

Charlie felt her hand being pulled back. She looked down as their fingers intertwined.
"I do miss you Jay. You know that. But you have Maddie and," She shook her hand from his.
"This isn't fair!" She cried out softly, tossing her hands. "You can't tell me you don't like me like that and then come in here and tell me you miss me and whatever. Thats not how this works!"
Charlie looked up at him, her eyes wild. "I luh--" She stopped. No, she didn't. "I like Landon a lot. I can't hurt him like this. And you doing this s**t to Maddie? I'm ******** screwed." She shook her head.

How will I know the right way to love you?She missed him? Oh right...Maddie. And what happened before. Jay let his hand become limp at his side. He looked down at Charlie. She really had transformed. It was too late for him to do anything. Why couldn't he miss her as a friend? Was that so wrong? Charlie was more like a girl than she knew.
And she liked Landon. She deserved the land shark. Jay's face contorted into an expression of confusion and then anger. "Rumor? What rumor?"

He lowered his head but continued to look at Charlie. Jay had preferred the Charlie before this one came along. It wasn't like this Charlie wasn't fine. She was. She had transformed into something else. Something beautiful. But Jay had liked the dirt-and-grit Charlie. The Charlie who hadn't let anything get in her way. Now she was gonna let some b***h, who happened to be his girlfriend, walk all over her?
"No way," he countered. "I know she got to you. You can't just let that go. Go and fight."
