If there was one upside for the Joker that resulted from his rather spectacular abandonment, it was that nobody was really looking at him. J'onn's eyes widened, and he flinched back, automatically bringing his cape up in an attempt to shield both his own face and the girl he was cradling.

The blaze never got to him.

Batman threw something, something made a popping sound, and suddenly the martian, Robin, the Joker, and the air around the three of them were all saturated with a fine, chemical-smelling mist. The fire sputtered out like it had suddenly lost access to oxygen.

Of course, this did absolutely nothing about the Joker being next to the window... although Wonder Woman was probably due back any second.

Joker reached the window, not smiling at all; his rage was completely undisguised for a moment. Then, an idea came into his head. A horrible, Grinchy idea. Drawing out a pistol and aiming it at Robin, he said with both new smile and new enthusiasm, "So long, Bird Girl!" and pulled the trigger twice. Due to the rapid firing, right when the flag popped out, so did Joker Venom. Lots of Joker Venom. Dropping the gun into the room so as to cause a distraction that no one could ignore, he yelled out, "And exit stage right, laughing all the way!" then dove out the window head first, plummeting towards the ground below, laughing the whole time. He knew that anyone who tried to stop him risked letting Batman and friends die, and therefore would have to ignore the Clown Prince of Crime. Would Batman live, even if no one came to help? Almost definitely. Would any hero actually risk that? Not if they're worthy of the name 'Hero'. It was foolproof.

Batman's gas mask was out and pressed against Robin's face before she could even think about gasping. Unfortunately, this left the caped crusader's own face uncovered... which meant that he had to rely on holding his breath. This did not, however, stop him from immediately rushing to the window, aiming briefly, and firing a hook down to wrap around the diving clown's leg. He was NOT getting away. Not this time. Not after Batman had been forced to sit there and listen to multiple Jason Todd jokes. "Get them out of here," he told Superman and J'onn without turning around (or breathing in).

He could hear the frown in Superman's voice. "Batman..." Then he seemed to come to the same conclusion that Batman had reached seconds before: Lex (who he was still holding onto) would die from exposure to that gas. And he couldn't spin to clear it, because he was still holding Lex, whose chances of handling that kind of force well were slim to none. Putting him down to do it wasn't much of an option, either. "Be careful. I'll be right back."

Batman would have snapped at him, probably something about how he WOULDN'T be right back, and they both knew it, but he quite literally didn't want to waste his breath. That and he was somewhat preoccupied with trying to locate his spare air filter while maintaining his grip on the line. Superman shot out, still holding Luthor, and was quickly followed by the Martian Manhunter and his passenger.

[Exit Superman, Luthor, Robin, and Martian Manhunter to Metropolis]

And then it was just the clown and the bat.

ENTER from Stark

There was a small 'poof' of black smoke, and the thin black cat was once again on the same rooftop that he had been on before. He quickly and eagerly scanned the nearby buildings until he found Lex Corp. "Alright, what did I miss?" he muttered to himself as he went up to the edge of the rooftop he was on and laid down to curl up and enjoy the show.

It would have been much more entertaining if he was actually inside the building to watch the show. Much better view. But, that wasn't a good idea for several reasons.
One, he was only here to watch. That was it. Two, he didn't want to get caught like he had at Stark. Three, he didn't want to get in the middle or hit by ricochet anything. Four, they might also recognize his method of exit and entrance as the same method Gossamer had "used". Which brought us to five...that would weird up the time line. Here, he technically had taken Gossamer only minutes before. But for him, hours had already passed.
So...yeah. Best to be the unseen spectator.

Joker's freefall was cut short by the Bat's swing line wrapping around his ankle. "AUGH!" he cried out in surprise and pain. He looked up (or was it down, as he was upside-down?) and saw the infernal contraption. He was ranting as he started to pull his boutonierre out from his jacket. "I'm going to kill that little magic wh*** if it's the last thing I do!!!" Holding it in one hand, he grabbed his pant leg and pulled himself up until he was able to properly aim the flower at the cable. "AND NO F***ING BAT-FREAK IS GOING TO STOP ME!!!" He squirted the acid from the flower onto the live, the corrosive chemical quickly eating away at it. Within moments, the line snapped. The fall recommenced, this time unaccompanied by laughter.

Batman's eyes narrowed as he finally found his extra gas mask and brought it up to cover his face. He prepared to jump out the window after the clown--

And his in-suit connection to his civilian cell phone rang. It was Alfred.

He blinked, but automatically paused, one foot on the windowsill, and pressed two fingers to the side of his cowl. "Go ahead," he said gruffly as soon as the connection was open. Joker was getting away, and...

There was no sound. Not even breathing. Nothing. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up and he went very, very still--still in a way that most human beings simply couldn't manage. Something was wrong. And just like that the clown was of only distant importance. He had to get home, and he had to get home FIVE MINUTES AGO.

Pressing a button on his belt, he sent a zip line out the window to connect with a building across the street. If the Joker was still around, he didn't notice on his way down... which probably said something about his frame of mind. As his feet touched the ground, the Batmobile zoomed up and screeched to a halt in front of him. Without further ado, he jumped in and sped off... Still looking exactly like Deathstroke the Terminator.

Batman needn't have worried about possibly missing the clown's body; it wasn't there. Only two things marked where the Joker would have landed. One was a single Joker card, laying face-up. The other, much more disturbing, was a smear of what looked like blood, starting from exactly where the clown would have landed, trailing off into an alley. The way the trail went, from the top of LexCorp, it would have looke like a giant red smile. From the streets, impossible as it would have seemed to most people, the sound of high-pitched, blood-curdling laughter echoed for what would have felt like blocks to those who heard it.

The slim black cat on the rooftop practically beamed as he watched the two head off in different directions. Oh my...was this going to be entertaining! He was SOOOO glad he was asked to intervene. He couldn't wait to see Batman's reaction when he go home. And Joker was absolutely livid because he though Gossamer had left him there. In actuality, she had no choice in the matter. Though she was easily persuaded not to go back right away.
OH! Perhaps he should hurry back to the cave and see if he could have the security by some miracle recorded the voice of those in the room at the time of the accident. Then the bat could have at least some hint on who he could hunt down.

Hm....what to do, what to do...

All JLA communicators suddenly recieved this message--"This is Zatanna Zatara to all JLA core and reserve members; keep an eye out for a little girl, about five years old, red hair, red eyes, Caucasian, likely wearing a red and white dress. Answers to Rosie. ... Could be multiple versions of subject. If found, please bring back to watchtower. Repeat, bring to watchtower. And yes, Flash, I'm aware that this sounds like a lost kitten poster. Shut up."

The black cat kept curled up on his little spot on the rooftop, his long tail flitting back and forth as he thought to himself.
Well, the chance to do anything with the original bat was probably gone now. It wasn't like he wasn't going to find something that could lead him to what happened. Batman was Batman...speaking of Bats though, it could be fun to go say hi to 'baby bat' now that he was up and running.
Or, perhaps it would be a nice thing of him if he went and busted the witch out of her cell. She did seem to be comfortable there, and the other girl was still there too. Oooh, he could try and drop anvils on her book while she was reading!
Or...he could go make friends with a sweet little red head girl. Surely she'd like a new pet kitty. And if he was her special little kitty, she probably wouldn't let anyone pick on her helpless little pet.
Or, maybe he could head over and see if there was anything he could do to help the spider with his little symbiote problem. Speaking of which, it had been a while since Rapture or that Chaos boy did anything, hadn't it?

Sigh...decisions, decisions...
Guess he could always just whip out his little bag of tricks and see what he could pull out to hang onto for later use.

All JLA communicators suddenly received this alert:

From: Oracle
To: Any JLA in or near Gotham:

The Joker is here on the number 12 bus going north on Victory Blvd near the Museum. He's trying to take Rosie. Hurry!

C.C. paused a moment, then smiled rather wide. Ooooh, scratch that. Interesting things about to take place elsewhere.
"Exit, stage right..." he purred to himself, exploding in a cloud of black smoke.

{Enter Goblin and Luthor from New York City}

Goblin flew in through one of the already mostly destroyed windows and dumped Lex on the floor in an unceremonious heap. Then he hopped off of the glider, jumped into Lex's top of the line swivel chair, and put his purple boots up on the expensive desk.
PostPosted: Sun May 02, 2010 1:19 pm

Lex, still chuckling, opened up a drawer and pulled out the false bottom, revealing a syringe, which he promptly grabbed and jabbed into his thigh, injecting its contents into himself. The chemical would take a few minutes to really begin to work, but they WOULD cure him. In the meantime, he leaned on his desk and looked at Goblin in HIS chair, feet on HIS desk. "Would you... appreciate me doi-i-i-ing that in your... office?" Luthor forced out through the constant laugh.

The Goblin grinned. "Oh, no. I'd probably kill you for it, in point of fact. You, however, can't afford to do any such thing. OOOhhh! Are these those little after dinner mints?" Still grinning, he reached over to the little tray, picked it up, and tossed one of the mints up to catch in his mouth.
