If you had been here when she left I would have been glad to ask permission first, but you weren't, and I couldn't let the opportunity slip away."

That doesn't go over well with him. "That lock violates apartment policies. Did you ever consider the landlord when he does inspections?" Actually, Eric doesn't know if they do them or not.
