Correction: It was a musical trying to be an operetta and failing miserably.

It's nowhere close to an operetta. Operettas are light-hearted, funny musical things that often include dancing.

Hah, Elanchana beat Fox! XD Bring out the cider, we have a winner.

And she's right. Operettas are classified as humorous Operas that will sometimes have a line or two spoken. PotO would be nowhere near an Operetta. It's not even a "rock opera".

*bows* Thank you, thank you. And actually, the credit would go to...what's that name?...*gets book*...Judy Tatchell (sp?) of Usborne's Understanding Music. Described operetta and musicals very thoroughly and used Phantom as an example of a musical.
Speaking of, we're going to see an operetta this weekend called The Mikado. Completely off-topic, I know...

Offtopic: Oooh!!! I LOVED that Operetta! I saw it a few years ago. It's so cute. X3

On-topic: I thank the internet for holding me captive all my life and counting. Plus, Wikipedia.

I've got a Jar of Dirt! And guess what's in it!

5. People that ask: "Is there a book?"

Yes, Number Five would have to be it.
Seeing as I am such a big reader
And a book was pretty much what started the whole "craze", if you will.
Number Five is the biggest one,
but they are all horribly irritating.

But what bothers me more are the people who have only seen the 2004 movie and say they hate Raoul because Erik was "hotter". stressed

Yay! You just stated one of my greatest pet-peeves. xD

Spelling of the characters' names wrong drives me insane as well.

Yes, that bothers me too. It shows that they like to act like they know what they are talking about, but haven't picked up the book.

Yes. xD That is how some drive-bys are in the Official Phantom thread. They act like they know everything, but they spell all their names wrong and etc...

Yeah, it gets terribly obnoxious. Luckilly they've decreased a lot in number of late.

Though...I so did enjoy mocking them.

1. I'll admit, I hadn't seen the stage show before the movie, but thats becase I didn't have the money. I had the soundtrack and knew the script by heart because my friend got me into it. I love the movie, but I think Gerry Butler is waaaay hotter in Timeline.

2. One word: RAWR!

3. Its not that he can't sing, its that people grow accustomed to hearing one actor, and then hearing another totally throws them off. I grew accustomed to... I actually don't remember his name, but then I heard Michael Crawford and was like "Um, no. He's not angry enough." But its not like I'm saying that MC can't sing, because he can. Its just my personal opinion that hes not 'grrrrr' enough (especially in regards to the Kay novel).

4. The movie is like bubbly sunburn, but I think the book's discription is what it should have been like. Then, people are allowed to be repulsed. But I'll still be like "Its not about looks. Its about love. Ugly people deserve love too." And Erik's not ugly. He's just misunderstood.

Yeah, it was fun. Also the occasional fights were pretty fun too. At least I enjoyed it. xd

Ah, no. Erik is ugly. Erik is waaay ugly. But that's the point. It's not that Erik is actually 'hot' and thus deserves to be loved (Schumacher, I'm looking at you.) it's that Erik IS obscenely, horribly ugly and STILL deserves to be loved.

Colm Wilkinson? And no, Butler really just can't sing. I've heard and appreciated enough different Eriks to get over being stuck on Michael Crawford's voice, and I still think Gerard Butler can't sing.
But do you want to know an interesting phenomenon I've noticed? It's almost* exclusively people who heard the movie first who like Gerard Butler's voice.

(*Now, I've never ever actually seen a Gerik fan who heard the musical first, I'm just allowing for the fact that there are probably a couple somewhere.)

First warning for flaming, Niquellela. We don't tolerate that here. Everyone has their opinions and if you can't express them maturely without name-calling, then you might not want to speak at all in such topics.

That and when people ask "Who's this Erik person you're talking about?"

About #3 (was it?). I think there's a difference between being a bad singer and not being able to sing. While Gerry has a bad voice, he can still sing.

What bothers me is when I am told "Phantom of the Opera is SOOO outrated. EVERYBODY just goes on about it WAY too much." The reason people go on about it is because of how AMAZING it is! And most of them haven't even read the book or stage version, only seen the movie!!!
PostPosted: Sun Sep 24, 2006 7:45 pm

Well, the movie is overrated, so, from their standpoint, I can agree with them.

Wow, this thread has grown. I haven't had the time to be here due to school, work (ya, I have a job) and writing 2 (soon to be 3) phan phics.
