Was Maya really here? The boy had spent what was possibly an hour in the same spot. He mostly spent his time wandering aimlessly while reading, so performing neither task seemed strange to him. Should he start thumbing through the Kohon now, he would definitely miss any sign of Maya, but he figured moving around on unfamiliar territory was ill-advised. Searching was never one of his stronger traits, although he understood the concept. It would be easier to tell Munin to do the work, but he didn't want to ask too many favors of the creature. Although, if he simply told Munin to keep an eye out for her...
"... let's find Maya." The boy whirled his left hand around to signal he was leaving. Both his hands gripped the bundled cloth for a moment to reassure the hold in his right hand before he let it hang over the back of his shoulder. He had hoped to wait in one spot for some sign of her approach, but there was a chance she hadn't come back home after all. There was nowhere he could think to look, so maybe she had gone to another part of the village. Xyn just hoped that he wouldn't get caught by that new kage in the midst of an event again.
Right... left... right... left... Munin's tiny talons wobbled in both directions as he watched for an opening. His head made even more erratic movements than his body, veering far outside what seemed to be a steady pattern. Xyn had said something again, but he had neglected to pay attention. The word 'Maya' came through clearly, but Xyn was always saying that word, the raven didn't let it register every single time the name was spoken. Having finally had a meal, Munin was awake and feeling restless. This was normally the time he was waking up so he was hoping to have some fun. Once Xyn stopped moving, he hopped forward. It looked as though he attempted a takeoff but neglected to reach his wings out to actually get off the ground. With the next step, he leaned his body into the motion as he went forward like a bullet, his wings barely moving as he stayed close to the ground. With the next few noticeable flaps, he made several circular motions like a boomerang trying to return to its master, changing direction with each completed arc. Once he had worked off the little jolt of energy from being in the air again, he landed on Xyn's left shoulder as he always did, starting to wonder where the boy was going now.

Xyn had grown far too accustomed to Munin's acrobatics and learned to ignore them. During the time the raven spent in the air, Xyn took a few seconds to readjust his cloak, spreading it evenly over his body. It was a perfect shield to the cold, although the Douken boy had already adjusted to this level. Without the snow and wind, the temperature was nothing to complain about after a while. The temperature of his home village wasn't much higher than this, so after a bit of adjusting, it was somewhat comfortable. Once the raven had settled down on the boy's shoulder, Xyn paused in his long stride to make a slight stretch of his back and neck. Only after that task was done did he place his feet together.
"If we encounter... when we encounter Shisei..." Xyn tapped his collarbone just under Munin's feet to get his attention. He kept his face forward, his eyes moving only to see if anyone was around.
"I'll need you to watch him." Sternly spoken, Xyn withdrew from his usual hesitant manner to give the statement clearly. Showing any interest in Shisei would never allow him to gather any information. If Shisei wanted Maya's strength, then Xyn had no choice but to test him. To seek power through such means, he might have no choice but to seek a confrontation, but that would have to wait.
Munin didn't care for the grim look on Xyn's face. He wished the boy would lighten up a little, especially when they were alone. There were so few times when Xyn actually let go that the raven wondered if those instances actually happened. Xyn was even serious about taking it easy. After working off the energy he built up from eating, he had hoped seeing the display would set Xyn's mind more at ease. Well, fine, he'd just have to try something else. Maybe he could-
'Shisei', there was that name again. What was it now? The raven wished to have nothing more to do with that human snake. A single word came through after Xyn spoke. From just those two words, Munin could easily gather the meaning. 'Watch' and 'Shisei' meant Xyn wanted him to continue gathering information on that child. What an infuriating thing to ask... well, if it meant special treats, he had no problem proving that his skills surpassed that snake-eyed boy. It was an interesting challenge, studying a human that was so unlike Xyn. Figuring out the personalities of those two might allow him to understand all humans, but there was still the trouble of the reward...

Maya could hear Xyn rustling, though he was far....sort of. He wasn't far enough away that she was oblivious to him, but he still stood in the center of the Grounds. Maya sighed, moaning and dropping her face into her hands. What now? What next? What else could possibly go wrong, who else could possibly come to see her in her shameful state of defeat? She knew if Shinichi came, that would be a lashing she didn't want at all. But Baki was still in the tent recovering, and at least Xyn was quiet enough that he wouldn't wake the poor lion. The spring was coming, and so were the genin tests - would there be chuunin testing too? Was she even strong enough to make it through to those? Maya's stomach churned when she considered the possibility - the very real possibility - of failure.

... he wanted to play. After a short time thinking, he determined that Xyn would give him a decent treat whether he performed a task or not. The boy wasn't the type to hang something over another person's head to get what he wanted. Even if Xyn wasn't willing, the cunning bird had a certain preference from winning something sweet from whatever random human he could trick into giving him food. If he was going to keep a careful watch on some kid that gave him the creeps, he wanted to have a little fun first, a simple exercise to set his mind at ease. But... how would he get Xyn to do such a thing? Before he could attempt to convince him, he'd have to tell him first. When Xyn started moving again, the raven thought carefully about what game he wanted to play. It had to be something that would interest the Douken but simple enough to loosen him up. If he could get the boy to enjoy himself, maybe Xyn wouldn't scold him so often whenever he had his own fun.
"Awk!" Munin called out sharply, flapping his wings as he hopped. Instead of going forward, he dropped behind Xyn's back. He flew backwards without turning around, just until his wings couldn't keep him in such a direction anymore. He dropped only a little lower to go forward, barely a foot from the ground, but moving up in short bursts that looked like waves.
"AWK!" He called again in a much larger tone as he flew by Xyn, making sure he took notice. There was one game that he attempted to teach the boy when they were younger, but he wasn't sure the boy still remembered it.
Wha...? Xyn couldn't help but strain his neck toward Munin, which was fruitless as the bird's movements quickly shifted out of his impaired peripheral vision. he made the mistake of trying to look over his left shoulder with the patch on, which just caused a stinging sensation to go down his spine before he realized how far he was craning his neck. Nearly stumbling over his own feet to turn his body in the direction of his neck and then turning his entire body back toward the right in an attempt to find the bird, Xyn was just slightly irritated by the scene. What did he wanted now? Munin had already been fed, so did he want something else in exchange? A meal for a single task was a fair trade... so maybe it had something to do with what he just said? Well, it wasn't as though he could reward the bird every single time he came near Shisei. Starting to calm down, and with a restrained sigh, Xyn tried to follow Munin's flight pattern. He figured a simple meal wasn't on the raven's mind, so what else would he be trying to say?
Having to move slightly to avoid the raven slamming into him, it only took a few passes to figure out what he was thinking.
... scary face. That old game?
It had been an incredibly long time since he had actually played a game with Munin. He thought that both of them had grown out of such behavior, but maybe Munin never showed an interest simply because he never showed an interest.
"... maybe..." He waved his right hand while facing forward again, continuing his path off the grounds. He'd have to look for Maya some other time it seemed.
"... later." Finishing the sentence that didn't really need another phrase inserted into it, Xyn waited for Munin to land back on his shoulder before walking at his normal pace, his stride at the moment much shorter than usual.

Karite entered the grounds happy to see his home without the influence of the snake. He was free of his bonds except for two. Maya and Orika would be tied to him for as long as he could hold onto them. As he ran up to the tents where he had seen Maya the most skinning and cleaning animals she was not around. Cupping his gloved hands around his mouth he yelled out, "MAYA...BAKI...ME AND KORE ARE HERE TO TRAIN!!" The boy waited to see someone or hear something back. He did not know where she would be nor if she would even care to see him. He had left her alone all this time. It wasnt like him at all.

The Tategami teenager let out a small sigh of relief when she heard Xyn leaving - though it did make her feel ashamed that she felt the need to hide from him. Even so... maybe now she could simply run her laps, and get through the day. Except...
Of course Karite would come. Of course, the grounds were anything but peaceful lately. Maya stood and began to run again, not really paying attention to the ground, and so distraught that it seemed she didn't even have to. Leftrightleftrightleftrightleftright.... right left? She couldn't even tell anymore, only that she kept gaining speed, and was almost done with her circuit around the grounds. Faster, faster - maybe if she was fast enough, she would cause a whirlwind. And maybe she should be serious and train, and maybe she should fight alone, and maybe...
Too many maybes. Maya withheld a feral shriek, ignoring her instinct to simply go and run into Karite, maybe knock him over - but just shut him up. If he woke up Baki, Maya was going to be none too pleased with the boy. She had already been slightly impressed that he hadn't complained or cried when she marked his face with her tekagi, and now contemplated that perhaps the mark meant something other to him than it meant to her. Ah well...that was his own burden to bare; perhaps he should have had it clarified. Though maybe it didn't even bother him at all - still running, she tried to push it from her mind...
Though a tiny part of her cared more than she wanted to admit, even to herself.

But what for? This new brat was probably the same as the rest. Like Kurohara, like Kira, even like Ichi - promises about always being around, and the second she started to rely on him, or think of him as family, a friend to go to.... soon Xyn would be leaving, if the pattern was consistent. The thought made Maya stumble, and at the speed she was going, the burns across her forearms and face would sting when she washed them. She growled and squeezed her eyes shut, a loud, direct command being issued.
"Shut up, Karite."
Rude, yes, but it was all she could manage with her brain wired the way it was. Maya had no tact, that much was true, and now with her recent beating, she had no skill left to brag about. Sukotto hadn't even broken into a sweat when he demolished their teamwork. Baki... Maya loathed herself for allowing the lion to be hurt, for not being fast enough to block the Uchiha's kicks towards her only real friend in life.
She was going to kill him.

Karite didnt know where Maya or Baki was. He had not seen much of the fight between her and Sukotto but knew that she had lost. As he heard someone tell him to shut up he knew that voice anywhere. Only one person he knew could strike fear with their words alone. Locking onto the voice he spun around to see Maya running around the grounds. Baki however was not with her. Did he get hurt, or as he hunting somewhere. It was a rare occasion that Baki and Maya were not together. The boy took her advice and shut up. If she said nothing else he knew she was angry. Looking down at Kore he put a finger over his lips telling the cub to do the the same. Walking into Maya's tent he almost yelled out in horror. Baki...Baki had never looked so bad even after the war. Grabbing his weapons back from Maya's tent he couldn't believe that happened. Strapping on all his holsters and tightening them he sat down cross legged waiting for Maya to finish. Sitting his Jo back across his lap he just thought. Who could have done that to Baki? That had to be a very strong fighter. Maya and Baki were unbeatable, but looking at Baki there had to be someone stronger on this island.

Maya pushed herself off the ground, her eyes peering over the tall grass at Karite. She sucked her teeth, making a noise of harsh disapproval - the reason obvious. Karite bore weapons that he was not supposed to have at all, though Maya realized in a few seconds she didn't particularly care. She'd grown up with Baki and ended up just fine. So what her entire body was scarred here and there, who cared? She smirked at the thought, and brushed herself off gingerly. No doubt the boy wondered who had caused such damage on Baki, and Maya again cursed Sukotto's name. Practice spar...dirty liar. He was out to prove that Baki wasn't anything but an overgrown pussycat, and Maya was going to skin him and make him a rug. And that other girl too! 'Beast' - what was she thinking? Baki probably had twice the character she did, and was better company - at least he didn't b***h all day about the people around him. Maya scowled, and turned towards Karite, though she hesitated. She had tripped and fallen a few times already, but was it worth giving up? Or should she stick it out and finish? Maybe... would the boy want to join her on her run? She hesitated, and shook her head. He would train later. It had been a long day, and Maya was sure there was still something happening...
"There's sposed to be a feast in the village," she grunted at him, wondering why he wasn't there already.

Karite sat with his eyes closed his his gloved hands digging into the Jo in his lap. He knew of the feast. Shinichi had told him not to miss it before he left. He wondered why Maya was being so short with him, but then again if Kore was in Baki's position right now he would be short as well. "I know I am not hungry. Dont worry about Shinichi I have spoken with him, he lifted the ban. Orika and Shisei wont be coming back anytime soon." He closed his eyes again and sat. While he was happy to have his weapons back he was rather distraught to see Baki in such a state. He wondered if Maya would stick to her words and keep going. Pushing herself harder. "Are you finished? Maya wouldn't stop until she was done." Referring to the girl as if she were another person Karite sat and waited. He would be patient. The girl was obviously at her limit emotionally and physically. Anyone with eyes could tell the girl had been pushing herself in every aspect today.

Maya blinked. Not hungry, huh? And no more time with the other two delinquents? And...referring to her as someone other than who she was? She growled, baring her teeth.
"Maya normally doesn't tolerate visitors to the grounds," she snapped, tawny eyes blazing. She turned away from him, feeling her face go red. He really pushed her temper. Where she had tried to avoid Shuga's drunken fits (mostly because Resa had handled them), this boy had the audacity and nerve to irritate her and provoke her. She scowled, shaking her head, and crossing her arms tightly across her chest. Wha..? Hey...how long had those been in the way..? She scowled further, her mood darkening. She didn't like this whole development thing very much... She humphed and walked away, intent on finishing her last quarter. Dammit.

Karite could feel the anger in every word he was beginning to think his cause of trying to win this woman over was lost. Spinning the Jo in his right hand as he stood he smiled his usual carefree smile. He had to think of something quick that wouldn't piss her off anymore than she already was. "Maya, you seem a little tense, you should try and relax. It makes things a lot easier in the long run." He knew this wasn't going to relax her at all but it was all he could think of at the moment. Spinning his Jo in his hand just to make sure if she charged he had some way of defending himself even if it was slight. Knowing Maya if she did charge she would slice his Jo in half.
Kore sat and picked up on the feelings of both Tategami (can I say that). Maya was extremely angry, more so than normal with Karite. Something else was wrong. He had seen Baki since he was here either. Maybe she missed Baki's presences around the grounds. It was hard to tell with Maya, but Karite he was always easy to read no matter how big the smile on his face was. He was scared in his skin. Maya was fierce, when she was aiming at you it was multiplied to the highest level. Turning his attention back at Maya Kore let out a reassuring roar. Maybe it would let her know everything would be alright.

Maya froze, and turned her tawny eyes not on Karite...but on Kore. Her heart melted a smidgen and she gave the cub a soft smile, the tender look in her eyes disappearing after a few seconds - but that was because she had turned her head from the duo again. "Relax, huh Karite...?" she murmured quietly, and rolled her shoulders before finishing her circuit around the grounds at an easy lope. She cleared her thoughts as she ran and focused only on Baki, only on getting stronger, and faster, to better fight with him and protect him. Karite...
Maybe the brat wasn't so bad. She wouldn't be alone anymore on the grounds...he had...potential. He seemed to handle his weapon well, was level-headed.... not that Maya was considering letting him in that easy. She came to a slow, sloppy stop in front of her tent, closing her eyes and clenching her fists. How could she even look in on Baki? She didn't want to wake him up or bother him...she would let him rest of the night. She turned towards Karite, shifting her arms gently and masking her face so that the sharp twinges of pain from the burns on her arms wouldn't show.
"You'll sleep in that tent," she said quietly, pointing towards her 'old' tent. She didn't want anyone with Baki tonight, though Ruha proved to be the exception. Had the cub even left the large tent since her arrival? Ah well... Maya dropped to the ground and sat with her legs crossed, positioning herself so that it was obvious to anyone who saw her what her intention was: she was going to sleep there.

Karite stopped spinning the staff almost abruptly and slid into the small leather holes on his back. Putting his hands in his pocket he looked at Maya and was for the first time a little afraid of her. He had never back down from her but the state Baki was in she could explode at any moment. He really just wanted to help her. She was family to him and so was Baki. Walking closer to her he stopped behind her and sat down. "Can we talk for awhile? Its been a long time since we have done just that. I can understand if you don't feel like it, but I thought it might help. If not I can talk and you can listen. I have a lot to tell you." The boy wasn't sure what she was going to say or what she was going to do. Maya was always a question mark on how she would react. Gripping a kunai, from his bag he would make sure she wouldn't leave another mark on his face. He was already branded with the mark of shame. He would not have another scare of disgust as well.
