Among other things? They reveal a different side to Holden's character (due to his youthful interest in them). Their disappearances in winter also symbolise the lack of permanence in life.

Americans in England are funny. N*ph and I saw some in Starbucks the other day. They talk loudly and use lots of words I don't understand. Then N*ph left the lobster stuck to the table leg and we had to go back for it and they laughed.
