Ike flew up to the peak of the volcano with Noctowl and called his partner back upon landing. Shelly wasn't too far away, and neither were the rest of the team.
A steamed Torkoal charged (though it was extremely slow) toward Ike, enraged by something. Ike grabbed Swampert's poke ball and released him, not wanting to spend too much time away from Shelly.
"Alright Swampert, use Water Gun." Ike said, giving the first attack.
Swampert took in a breath and released a stream of water on the Torkoal. The water struck the foe with a good amount of damage, but it stood its ground and emitted black from its nostrils.
The Torkoal gave Swampert and angered look and merely stood up to make itself taller. There it stood, absorbing the sunlight. Ike new it was charging up a Solar Beam.
"Swamp, Bide." Ike said, going somewhere with this.
Time passed. As the Torkoal charged solar energy, Swampert bid his time.
Finally the Solar Beam was finished charging and the Torkoal let a massive beam of light shoot at Swampert, hitting him square-on. It delivered a blow that nearly knocked Swampert out, but he took all the damage done to him and turned it around at the Torkoal.
"Now, Swampert!" Ike shouted. Swampert began to glow with a bright green aura and returned the damage done upon it to the Torkoal. The foe was blasted away from it's spot and flew over a cliff. The pokemon retreated in it's shell and slid down the slope, defeated.
"Nice." Ike told Swampert, returning him. That battle escalated fast, and Swamp was whomped out.

"Now what?" Sammy yawned, having been sitting down for awhile. Squirt say lazily on her shoulder.

Ike walked over to Adie and answered her question, scratching his head.
"I'm... not sure how any of us can help. If that machine is down in the lava...well... how are we gonna fish it out?" he questioned.
Shelly was over at the edge of the volcanic crater, looking down into the lava. Every once and a while she would flinch from a heat plume rising from the fiery pit.

"Could we get a bunch of fire pokemon to go down and attach a cord to it or something, so we can pull it out?" Sure, it was a stupid idea...but at least she was trying, right? Of course, if they had fire pokemon that could fly....well, that would be ideal, now wouldn't it? Or even psychic pokemon that could lift it out with their powers! Wow, her mind was going haywire today...

"I'm game for any idea that won't blow us up," Sammy chuckled, fondling Blitzen's pokeball in her hand. Squirt rolled his eyes; he had hoped he could help.

"Now hold up." Shelly said, walking over to the group. "Just because a pokemon is a fire type doesn't mean it won't get burnt by lava." she frowned. "That's why you don't see Vulpix taking naps on lava flows."
Ike became confused.
"I thought you wanted us to bring fire-types for that reason." he commented.
"Yeah," she spoke with a 'duh' tone in it. "One of you guys must have a Magmar or a Slugma... you know, something that CAN deal with lava?"
Ike grunted some swears. 'Make my team look like idiots... I'll show you...' of course he couldn't. None of his partners couldn't deal with the high temperature of swimming in lava.
Ike looked at everyone else.
"Anyone have a Slugma, or a Magmar? Or any evolutionary stage of them?" he asked.

Maddy sighed. "What a coincidence. I just caught a Magmar." She released the Pokémon from it's Pokéball. He seemed awfully tired. "He's a bit tired from the fight, but I'm sure he can swim down and find that thing."

Sammy looked at Ms. Maddy, thankful that she had a pokemon. "Yay! No more exploding!" She cheered.

"Well... anytime would be nice." Shelly sarcastically told Maddy. Ike clenched his teeth. They should be thanking Shelly for letting them now about their volcano, but the bitterness and the rivalry were still fresh in his mind.
"Go when you're ready." Ike told Maddy.
The more time passed, the more Ike began to wonder how weird it was for Shelly to come to THEM for help.

"Yea...all I have is an Arcanine and Houndour...no help here." As usual, she thought a slightly disappointed look coming to her features. Instantly, she masked it, putting on the same bright smile she always seemed to wear. Adie was never one to be a downer, at least not for long. She looked over at Maddy as she released the Magmar, mentally wishing she had caught a cool pokemon like that. Oh well...Arcanine was still a find. The thought brought a small smile to her lips.
"You alright," she asked as she looked over to Jack. He didn't seem to be doing too well with all the heat. Heck, she was starting to feel a little uncomfortable herself, and for that reason, she slipped her dress over her head, revealing a deep blue bikini underneath. She always had on a swimming suit...you never knew when you had the perfect time to catch some rays! Pulling a bottle of water from her pack, she took a deep drink before offering it to him as well. Maybe he was just feeling a little dehydrated.

Sammy looked from Jack to Adie; she grinned to herself as her match-making senses kicked in. Perhaps some time she could try to get those two hooked up, but now wasn't the time. She then looked down at the lava, an idea suddenly popped into her head. 'Jump... jump...' her mind told her over and over again.

Maddy nodded to Magmar and the Pokémon leapt into the lava. Maddy sat at the edge of the volcano and peered down into the lava. She conjured up a ball of purple fire and tossed it onto the lava, watching as it danced around for a bit until eventually burning up. "Hmm..."
A couple minutes later, Magmar returned carrying a huge black box. "Geez... Big enough?"

Soon an idea popped into Ike's mind, and he turned to the rest of the team.
"If Magma has been here to study the volcano, they might have other things like seismographs or something around here. Everyone spread out and look for anything suspicious. If you find one, have your pokemon burn it." Ike said, giving the orders. "We'll have a bunch of ice-cold drinks when we get back to the HQ." he added, hoping it would bring up the spirits. It was hot, and that was an understatement.
