"I thought you'd be much more interested in my biology after that whole schpeal," Dari said with a laugh. "Unfortunately I can't tell you too much about my job, other than that I'm Toby's partner and we work to protect entities from humanity and humanity from entities. We work with people and creatures, offer housing, things like that. Have you met Seamus?"

Luca hesitated. "You don't mind?" he asked. He was interested, but after Dari told him everyone had died and parts had made him--how did that even work? "I figured it'd be a hard subject."
He smiled at the mention of Seamus. "The big black cat that curses people. Yeah, I've met him. He was at the birthday party."

"He's one of the entities that decided to stick around," Dari said, and then shook his head, "No, not at all. My biology is only slightly different than that of the rest of my people in that I've inherited the memories of several, as they didn't get to choose what parts of themselves to 'give up' so to speak."

"So your species is born from parts?" Luca asked. Well. That certainly explained Dari. The crew had died and become accidental parents. "You should meet my dryad, she was born from a tree. I bought it at the store, planted it and a kid pops out demanding to know why I moved her tree."

"Well, they're all born from trees. It was her tree long before it was yours," Dari said with a chuckle.
"Components, more like," Dari said then as he reasoned, "I couldn't tell you what they are. There are no words for them here, but they exist in everyday items and even some foods. You gain new abilities depending upon what you have; the ability to create sight orbs, to 'hear', to see properly, to change shape, and sentience. Then other components make up memories and thought and personality traits at times. They just got lucky and managed to scrape up the right amount of things for sentience, and a few sets of memories, although I wish I could forget those."

Toby and Maia had been cooking from an ungodly hour in the morning. The turkey was perfect. The side-dishes were perfect, and their guests had promised to bring more, usually favorites from years before. Toby carved the turkey and then it was a free-for-all, buffet style. Even Dari was making a plate with plans to purge once it had all dissolved. Lori got in line just before Luca so he could tell him what thing were and Toby, of course, took the back of the line himself. He was beaming.

Luca had never seen so much food in his life. His eyes were wide. He followed Lori through the line, selecting things that he recognized.
Maia was standing by Toby, and smiling at him. "Do you think everyone will like the pie?" She asked.

Lori motioned toward a line of nondescript casseroles and pointed to each.
"Sweet potato, broccoli and cheese, green bean, and that's potatoes au gratin..." He wasn't going to overeat, himself. His metabolism would probably take care of it before it mattered but they had plans tonight. "I never grew up with any of this sort of stuff."
Toby nodded, loading up his plate shamelessly. "Absolutely. They're going to be way too full, and then we'll bring out the pie and they'll have to eat more."
Dari seemed to be one of very few people brave enough to try and ambrosia, and it made up about half of his plate. It was so many wonderful textures!

Luca took some sweet potatoes and a bit of the green bean casserole, but didn't seem to be taking much. He didn't want to spoil their night together with a food coma. "Me either. I told you, my parents only did plants."
Maia grinned, filling up her plate. "Sneaky," She said. "Stuffing people with food and then providing pie."

"Only plants? Never meat?" Lori asked. That seemed insane! Even his family hunted, and you had to have turkey on Thanksgiving! He grabbed one of the rolls at the end of the line and drizzled his food with home-made gravy.
"Oh, that's what Thanksgiving is all about!" Toby said, "We put everyone in a food coma so they'll stick around and play games. But not Dance Dance Revolution. Never Dance Dance Revolution."

"No," Luca made a face, taking a roll and grinning at Lori. "I rebelled, obviously. Where do you want to sit?"
Maia took a helping of sweet potatoes. "We're going to be stuffed." It was a good thing it took so much work to gain weight then, wasn't it?

"Wow. What kind of hippie Wood Elves were your parents?!" Lori teased, but of course he knew now! "Oh, we can sit anywhere. At the table if you want, or on the couches. Where ever you're most comfortable." He wasn't sure how comfortable Luca was with the others and whether he'd want to sit next to a near-stranger.
Seamus meowed at Lori's feet. Lori placed a dessert plate of turkey skin on the floor of the dining room in the corner. He wasn't a big fan of the skin and knew that Seamus would just dig into the buffet table if not fed. The sidhe liked to feel included. Rosie had been dropped off at daycare of their way to Toby's.
"Yup," Toby said, "but it's okay. We'll make it an early night. Cuddle. Maybe watch some TV." It seemed like a good plan to him!

"They're different," Luca said with a shake of his head and a smile. "Couch?" he suggested. He beans to pet Seamus before heading towards the couch.
"Sounds good." Maia was always happy to cuddle! "Where do you want to sit?" His plate was full by now, wasn't it?

Ah, the couch fit less people. Lori was glad he had asked. He nodded and went with Luca to the couch and set his plate on his lap to begin eating.
"Thank you for coming with me," he said, smiling over at the man.
"Table," Toby said, nodding to where Dari had sat down. One of them could have the head and the other sit beside Dari on either end. He'd let Maia pick. "How's your first Thanksgiving so far, hm?"

Luca sat next to Lori and smiled. "Thank you for inviting me," He said. "This is wonderful. I'm sure the food is too!" He'd never experienced something like this.
Maia headed over and sat next to Dari. "Its nice," she said, smiling at him. She'd definitely enjoyed making the meal, even if it'd involved waking up early. "Everyone gathering like this, it's nice."
