basically the setup for EQ2 is this:

during the time of EQ1, we invaded the planes of the gods. and not just the 'lesser' gods. the big guys to. the powers of War, Disease, Fire, Flame, Water, Air, Earth, Valor, Storms, Nature, Hate, Nightmare, Fear, Mischief, and Time.

In retaliation, the gods had a meeting. Rallos Zek and Soleusk Ro, the powers of Flame and War, wanted to destroy everything and start over. Tunare, Karana who represent Nature and Storms wanted to let us off with a warning.

Quellious, goddess of Tranquility made a comprimise. the Gods would withdraw thier influence form the mortal realm, and they would shatter the world to divide the races, citing our unification was part of the problem.

So...the blew up the moon, Luclin. the shattered the world quite effectively. storms made the oceans treacherous.

the surviving cities were Qeynos, and Freeport.

the Ogres and Orcs, Gnolls and Giants, after regaining thier intellect with the withdrawl of the Rathe's influence..created a second Rallosian Empire, and set seige to Freeport and Qeynos at the same time being led by the Avatars of War and Flame.

in Qeynos, the Avatar of Storms defended the city.

in Freeport, the Avatar of Tranquility.

This was the Battle or War of Defiance.

and when it looked like all was lost...the Barbarians had been routed by orcs and kobolds, the walls of Qeynos barly able to stay standing...the Freeport Militia nad the Paladins of Marr, long standing enemies, barely able to defend the giants and ogres in freeport..

the Ogre general took the Temple of Cazic Thule, the lord of Fear, even though the Avatar of war told him not to. this pissed off Cazic, who unleashed the Green mist...which is kinda like a vaporous acid bath to people it wants to eat.

This decimated the Rallosian forces. the Avatar of Flame was killed in Qeynos, and the Avatar of War was bested in Freeport.

then, Lucan De'lere used this opportunity to crush the Paladins of Marr, and defeat the already beaten up Avatar of Tranquility, taking the Soulfire blade from the dead hand of the Avatar of War, adn making himself Overlord of Freeport.

I like that setting.
