Think of it this way. Professional wrestlers don't really wrestle. It's all kayfabe. They're strong, and they know how to fight, but they "sell" the hits. It's a performance. RP is like that.

Some people look at RP in terms of "winning". That they have to "win" the fight and do everything they can to argue why the opponent's attacks don't do anything, while simultaneously arguing the effectiveness/superiority of their own attacks. This, I've come to see, is nothing more than a glorified form of arguing about martial arts on a Bullshido.com forum.

Other people look at RP in the eyes of a writer, just like people in professional wrestling...to an extent. They take hits when it'll make a good story and make the fight more entertaining. They roll with things more often, and although they generally try to outdo their opponent, they use creativity to do it rather than simply arguing how their attacks are more effective and the opponents' aren't.

Not that you should always take every attack your opponent throws at you, of course. I feel it just takes a bit of thought outside of your head in order to determine what is most entertaining for all parties involved (namely, you, your opponent, the judges and the audience).
