"No, I can't," Owle answered Thor, in the same tone she had used before. Then Rain spoke up, distracting Owle's attention for a moment.

"You're not fighting today, Rain," sae said, matter of factly, as if in the saying she made it true. While Owle was so distracted, Tomorrow managed to take a few steps closer to Rain's bedsie without her notice. The instant her eyes turned back to him, though, she moved, between him and Rain if possible, directly beside him if not.

Thor dismissed her easily as one who could not harm him...but if this assumption were true, Owle clearly didn't know it. When he reached out a metal hand toward Rain, her own hand would catch him by the wrist, pushing back against him.

It would be laughable, really, how easily he could overpower her if he tried. What would perhaps not be laughable was the fact that this mortal woman would not let up, attempting to push his arm back even after he'd succeeded in touching Rain. Only once he withdrew his arm would she let go of it, though her eyes continued to glare at him, and she continued to stand over him as he knelt.

She bristled as he leaned closer to Rain, but did not attempt to stop him. From that position, he could do no real harm, except perhaps a gentle headbutt.

"If you were sorry, you'd stay well away," Owle growled after him, hair on the back of her neck standing on end. Her eyes followed him out the door, and in the end she wished she had a reason to stab a dagger in his back as he went...not that it would do any good to the world.

He'd just come back.

The IV would still come out, just after Tomorrow had given his sage advice, rather than before. But during said advice, Rain just kinda stared at him blankly. If one listened closely enough, they could hear gears turning in his head. Then a big, goofy smile plastered Rain's features. The same kind of smile someone would get when they were given the wisdom of the ancients while they were high as a kite.

biggrin

The words wouldn't be forgotten, but it would just take a while to sink in is all. But before he knew it, Tomorrow was already out the door, Owle's vicious stare boring holes in the man. Was that a metaphor, or was it a morphine-based hallucination? Who knows!

However, Rain still wanted to finish his fight.

"waaaiiittt..." he tried to call out, but it was still barely audible. The IV would come out, as stated before, and he would go to throw his legs over the side of the bed, before he would stand. But the sensors that were hooked up to Rain prevented him from pulling away quite so easily. He made one more forward pulling motion, a number of the sticky pads coming lose. However, he had turned his upper body too far, and his momentum + gravity just kept him going.

He would fall off the side of the bed, the last of the monitors coming lose and probably sending all the doctors into a tizzy since he looked like he had just flatlined. That wasn't an immediate concern for Rain. He would be practically unable to use his gross motor functions, due to the internal self-destructive damage his muscular system did to itself. Plus, one arm and one hand were out of commission for the moment. So he was more or less stuck.

Upside down.

Stuck in the corner of the room between the bed and the wall, Rain was curled up, his back on the floor and the legs over his head. The entire room, including and especially Owle, was upside down. The ceiling was the floor and the floor was the ceiling. Even the fact that he was wearing one of those loose-fitting hospital gowns that was hiding very little in this position didn't seem to concern him as much as the upsidedownness of the world did.

And for someone who was as stoic as Rain tried to make himself out to be, he was giggling an awful lot.

Instead of keeping an eye on Thor's retreating back, Owle should have been paying better attention to Rain. Before she knew what was happening, he was standing up, having ripped the IV off him.

"Rain!" she shouted in exasperation.

She ran to his side, trying to stop him, but she was too late. He'd already toppled over, hanging upside down in the corner.

"Rain..." Owle sighed, moving to his side. "You need to rest, alright? I'm going to help you get back in the bed." She stared at him for a moment, trying to figure out how to lift him, then turned back to Rage. "Hey, Rage. Could you help me with him? He's got himself beaten silly."

((Not going to say Rage recognizes Rain from Brutal Underground to avoid horrible retcon later.))

A small twitch appeared in Rage's left eye. He had been through all that trouble just to find that absolutely nothing was wrong. He had seen the big guy and the hospital gown having an exchange of words, one-sided as it was, and squeezed through the door just after Thor left.

"Hey, Rage. Could you help me with him? He's got himself beaten silly."

"He looks just fine to me. Somebody must have had too much happy juice," he begrudgingly remarked before turning his head to the side and doing what he could. There were some things that he didn't want to experience in life.

This was very near the top of the list.

I hate hospitals....

((Awww, why not? I was looking forward to it! X_x ))

With the combined strength of both people, Rain was hoisted back onto the bed just as the doctors and nurses arrived. They sighed in relief, seeing that he had just unhooked himself, and didn't just die. A nurse came over and helped the two of them get Rain situated back into the bed, with another nurse and a doctor being the only ones who chose to stay, to make sure he was alright.

As the nurses were reapplying everything, Rain seemed to be drifting in and out of consciousness, nodding off. His little adventure moments before apparently took a lot out of him, and he never truly recovered from the exhaustion from before. He turned towards Owle and the newcomer, staring at them blankly for a few seconds. He would then give them the biggest smile, then would finally pass back out.

((Well, I can't see any long-term problems...))

Once Rain was safely back where he was supposed to be, it dawned on Rage who the man was. A pang of anger and regret coursed through him from the last time they met in that horrible underground tournament. The twitch was back.

Several reasons for pummeling the sleeping man ran through his head, the greatest of which was the disabling blow he received that limited his time in the brutal battle and forced him into an early non-victory. The concept of losing never passed through his mind - clearly he had just not tried hard enough or some other such nonsense. Despite the ease of which he could turn Rain into sashimi and the rest of the room's equipment into mechanical chop-suey (he was still hungry, even after all those steaks from earlier), he kept his hands folded across his chest.

There was no honor, and thus no fun, to offing a man in a hospital bed.

"Well, nice to see you, Owle," he said dismissively, turning around and starting to head back out unless Owle stopped him. "Let me know when he's doing better. I need to kick his a**."

"Rage, wait - what?"

Owle reached out a hand to stop Rage from leaving, then stopped suddenly at his last words. Instead of grabbing hold of him, she followed him out, walking just a step behind him.

"I don't see you for ages and now you're going to leave again? What were you doing here, anyway? And why do you need to kick Rain's a** now?"

Owle gave the clear and distinct impression that she wasn't going to leave Rage alone until he answered at least one of her questions.

"Yes, I thought you were in trouble, and I have a score to settle," said Rage, answering Owle's questions in much the same quickness and tone as they had been asked.

He looked over his shoulder at an approaching doctor. What were they good for in this day and age when a man who had very nearly died was so very capable of removing himself from the bed he was supposed to be restrained in.

His stomach rumbled loudly - he still hadn't had his fill of eats. Those steaks from earlier were far too dry... there was something unsettling him, as even the smallest peek at his mind would reveal nothing but chaos and discord.

"Will you at least stay and talk for a little bit?" Owle demanded, exasperated. Hearing his stomach growl, she seized upon hope. "Why don't you come back to the Firebrand and I'll make you something to eat? You've got to stop for lunch anyway, right? It won't take long, and you'll get a free meal out of the deal, so why not?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 31, 2007 9:33 pm

"Yeah, yeah."

He heard what Owle had to say, but it was difficult to look into her eyes. His last opponent... for just a moment he thought she was Owle. "Let's just get out of here. I hate hospitals."

"Alright," Owle agreed, smiling as she walked after him. "Lead the way."

As they walked through the mess of corridors leading to the exit, Owle ventured, "Hey...did you meet Slash? He helped me get here, said he was your cousin. I thought he might have been looking for you."

Stopping so quickly his body actually lurched forward before he could regain his balance, he gave Owle an odd look. "You're... sure about that." He shook his head before continuing on. "Never mind - let's just go. You wanna take a ride on Ruyji there? It'll be faster."

He couldn't help but feel selfish - he just wanted to feel the air rush into his face and nose, into the back of his head. Maybe it'd wake him up and clear out his mind.

"Yeah," Owle answered. "He was here, just a moment ago. Not sure when he walked out."

She grinned at the mention of Ryuji, though her smile was dampened as Rage continued to look distressed. "Sure! It's been a while since I've seen him, and I think I'd pass out if I had to walk any farther."

"Mommy, mommy! Look!" A young catboy with a suspicious, scaly tail pointed up into the sky. His mother, with much the same ears, grasped his free hand and squeezed it tightly. "For the last time, Nekyo, there are no such things as dragons. And if thre were they'd just leave you, like your father who will not be named...."

There was a large shadow circling the hospital every few minutes, casting dark spots on the street below.

"Now come on, we have to..."

THWAM.

Several car alarms went off as a large, red-scaled dragon landed in the parking lot. He looked briefly over his shoulder at the mother and son not too far away, his low growls meaning nothing but nonsense except to the ears of the child.

"Well... damn. Tell your mom sorry about all that mess seven years ago. The child support checks are in the mail."

He waited impatiently until Rage and Owle could climb up on his back, then took off with more speed and intent than usual.
