The problem with Illithid is that they are not very devious. Yes, they are often pulling all the strings from behind a curtin, making puppets dance for their sick pleasure, but that does not make them devious.
Mental domination can hardly be considered intrigue.
Maybe if one of the Illithid in a group was to take command of the Hero (In an attampt to foil the group), and lead the other Illithids to believe he was innocent, that could be devious.
But the problem with a communal mind, is your mind is communal.
