"Well, there are deer in Washington that'll eat right out of your hand," Toby defended. He hadn't been absolutely sure it was going to run away. It did live in a forest occasionally swamped with humans, but they were pretty far off the path. He sat back down and continued with finishing his orange.

"I want to visit Washington," Maia decided. She finished her sandwich and looked up, then around. "Which way do you want to try next?"

"There's also fox and deer parks in Japan where the animals are entirely acclimated to human contact. We should go some time," Dari said. Boy, a black man in Japan. What would they say? He'd read that blondes and redheads were often treated like celebrities and forced to take pictures. He didn't want any pictures taken of him showing up anywhere on social media! Ah, but that was thinking too far ahead.
Toby nodded. "Hm. Let's not disturb the deer, we'll go that way." He nodded off in the direction Dari was facing.

Japan? That was half a world away! "Aren't there kappas over there? And dragons?" And a number of unpleasant things that probably would make a meal out of them. But there were good things, too.
"Where can we see seals?" Foxes And deer were great, but Maia missed seeing her favorite animal (besides Seamus) regularly.

"Yeah, but they tend to stay away from humanity," Toby said, "Dragons less so. They're becoming incredibly rare."
Dari thought an aquarium was a horrible idea, so she shrugged. "We can Google it. There are seals all over the world."

"Okay," Maia agreed, giving Dari a smile. "Lets go." They wouldn't find anything terribly exciting here, she was sure if there'd ever been native entities to Arizona, they'd all been found. But maybe they could see another deer? She took Toby's hand. "Lets go see the rest of the forest."

The hike was uneventful in the best possible way. Nobody broke any bones, nobody fell or collapsed of dehydration, and they got to see a few cute animals on the way. When they got home, Toby went to take a shower and Dari followed after him in a few minutes to remove his paint while his partner bathed. When it came time for Toby to step out, Dari left the room, and then went back in to continue un-painting. What would tonight bring? Video games? Board games? Movies? Snuggle time?

Tonight would bring neither movie nor video games, it seemed, as Maia took hold of Toby's hand later that evening. She looked towards the stairs. "Come with me," she said.

Toby's first thought was that she had something important to show him. It happened from time to time. He was a little confused as to why Dari couldn't come, though. Had he painted her something else? There was something oddly soft in her demeanor, and she simply followed him up.

Maia placed a kiss on his cheek, indicating they should go into their bedroom.

Every once in a while, Toby woke up before Maia. They'd cuddled a lot the night before, and laughed and kissed and petted, and Toby had woken feeling even closer to Maia than ever before. He hadn't thought such a thing would be possible. He stirred and leaned in, smooching Maia's ear to try and wake her.

Maia stirred, cuddling Closer to Toby before opening an eye. "Good morning love," she said, giving him a sleepy smile. "What time is it?"

Toby shrugged. "No idea." Did it matter? He'd just had a fantastic night and he still felt so warm and loved. He gathered Maia up in his arms and kissed her properly. "Good morning."

It didn't matter, then. She smiled, snuggling into his arms. She returned the kiss, reaching up to flatten his hair. "Are you hungry?" she asked. She didn't want to get out of bed, not really.

"Mm, I could eat," Toby responded, which was always his reaction, whether he was actually hungry or not. "What do you want to make today?"
