"Yes, but he doesn't need me anymore. He already has a new family, his childhood innocence long since defiled." Mala couldn't cheer up any, feeling like a lonely mother watching her own child grow up and walk away without so much as a single goodbye.

Van frowned slightly. It was becoming difficult to think of things to cheer her up when Mala got into these 'my brother is leaving me' moods. "If you keep saying things like this, you'll make him feel guilty. You should just be happy that he's happy."

Mala thought for a moment, unsure. "I don't know. All I do know is that I need to find some way to calm down and remove all of these worries from my mind, or at least suppress them for a little longer.

"Can you take Jez for a while?..." Riley said, gently holding her out to one of the girls. He couldn't come up with an excuse outside of 'in need of male bonding'. Even if he didn't find Alek, he could use a chance of being alone with his thoughts for a change.
"I wish I knew what to say, but I don't know what else I can do for you." Van said apologetically.

Jez, still locked in a staring contest with her mommy, made a sad noise and snuggled closer to her daddy, and made an annoyed noise as her auntie took her.
Alek was about half a mile away, his mouth buried in a deer's throat. He could faintly hear the conversation, enough to know Riley was going to be looking for him. Gently, Alek let the deer down, and then he started to walk slowly in the direction he'd came from.

"Don't worry, daddy will be back soon." Riley said giving Jez a kiss on the forehead before wandering off into the woods.

Mala looked away, trying to think up a conversation starter as they walked along. Eventually she thought of something and asked, "So...how many kids do you want?"
