I have one question....even though we have manstoppers for our scouts, I've heard that shotgunner scouts suck hardcore. What's y'all's take on it?

. . .Manstoppers? Something from the new rulebook?

Dark Angels' scouts get manstopper rounds. Shotguns are for charging into combat guns blazing, so they're kind of an interesting niche to fill.

Perhaps you could enlighten me as to what Manstopper rounds do?

They make the shotguns Str 4 instead of 3. 3nodding

Anyway, I don't like shotguns either; you're swapping out an extra attack in Close Combat for a weaker attack on the way into combat; I think you're much better off with CCW and bolt pistol.

Dark Angel shotguns are assault 2, pistols are assault 1.

Plus you are forgetting a fundamental rule taught to me by someone: shotguns are awesome weapons, no doubt about it.

Yes and no, when your army, like mine, being blood angels, focuses highly on close combat, you want the pistol and CCW. But its entirely situational also.

Situationally, why not do a partial kit? Give some of your scouts Shotguns and the rest BP/CCW. That way you keep a decent number of shots and still pick up some extra attacks in CC.

Most mathhammer will read your reply and crank out a "cannot compute!" reply, or one of those annoying replies about how it messes with their math.

Remember, scouts for the vanilla codex will most likely get WS and BS 3, so their overall effectiveness in combat will be less.

WS and BS 4, my good man. 290 on 5th edition rulebook.

Plus you can only use shotguns going -into- the assualt; 1 extra S3 attack going in, versus an extra S4 attack every round of combat? Bolt Pistols have a harder punch and contribute to the actual combat, so I honestly don't see why even Dark Angels would taken anything else for CC...

I don't take them. I've got a five man squad with two snipers, a heavy bolter, a sarge, and one bolter. I've got two with knives and bolt pistols, two shotgunners, and another bolter as well, but I don't use them.

In the new Marine codex scouts will get WS BS 3 <<

Edit: Shotguns are good for if you are assaulting an enemy with high initialive or WS in close combat (or for enemies that are just plain deadly in CC.) You may have to charge them, but definitely want to be facing as few as possible.

*reads back a few pages* Yes, WS and BS 3! So we keep saying but people are mighty ignorant of that little bit of info. Plus the stat lines out back are riddled with types. A chaplain has WS and BS 4? confused

Once again it would be best to completely ignore the stat lists in the back of the 5th edition rulebook because it is riddled with typos. As to whether scouts should have shotguns or ccw think about if the combat goes longer than one turn. The shotgun is assault 2, strength 3 for me (i'm a black templar player so i already have scouts with ws and bs 3) but the ccw is still better because in the assault the scout gets as many attacks with the shotgun (2 shots before charging and 2 attacks in cc) as with a pistol and ccw you get one shot before charging and 3 attacks in cc. Then if combat continues with a shotgun you only get one attack per turn where as with pistol and ccw you get 2 attacks per turn. I haven't read all of the 5th edition rulebook yet so if something here is drastically wrong please correct me.

I'm kind of just starting blood angels. With full kit and making one of my assault squads an honor guard, I've got 1300 some odd points. My force is still painfully small though, since I made a point of getting quite a few special characters, and a Baal Predator.
