Apparently defining religion as a set of specific practices claimed to lead primarily to spiritual fulfillment and promoting a particular ontology is "extremely limited, narrow, and closed-minded".

If I have to see one more Ancient Aliens program on the so-called History channel where a bunch of European and American scholars talk about the gods, monuments and myths of ancient indigenous cultures and do the whole song and dance of "we can't explain how these poor dusky people built this/learned this/etc when they didn't have modern technology/western science/written language and weren't 'advanced' enough Therefore it had to have been ALIENS" without acknowledging the inherent racism of their statements or humanity's capacity to build and learn extraordinary things regardless of their location or time period or educational level OR the possibility that maybe, just maybe, these gods are actually gods and not big-eyed gray X-Files extraterrestrials....I am going to find these scholars and punch them in their reproductive organs.

I'm really having second thoughts about this guild I joined.
I mean, every single topic is basically "Lulz, look at the stoopid X-tians and their talking snakes and zombies".

I love how people assume that just because a given people didn't have the technology we do now, they were somehow less intelligent. Nope, the people of the bronze age were just as smart as you, and they probably spent a whole lot more time thinking since they didn't have illuminated rectangles to stare at for untold hours each day. Anyway, I think the solution here is to cancel your cable subscription. Why would you listen to an illuminated box that lies to you every day?

The History Channel does have a lot of good stuff - it isn't all just ancient astronauts and crap like that. I really liked their stuff on the Romanovs and Queen Elizabeth I.
I watched the ancient astronauts episode, and yeah, it was stupid. I remember thinking things like, "that's no space helmet - that's a tribal hat!" or "that circle is the SUN, stupid!" a lot. lol

My partner likes to watch these ancient alien shows all the time. I'm always walking past the TV with variations of "Ooooh, of course those *appropriate adjective for the people they're talking about* couldn't build that if Whites couldn't figure it out! Of course it was aliens! LOGICAL!"
Although my language tends to be coarse and inappropriate for this guild.

Ugh. Sometimes I hate being community admin. I had to lock my guild to private again today (it's been public forever) and enforce guidelines on someone who, despite obvious great amounts of reading of scripture, was causing so much disharmony that it was distracting to the rest of the guild.
I had to banhammer someone from Loving Kindness.
I feel miserable.
