A war of some sorts?
Depends on how you base your elves?

Drow are an invention of Dungeons and Dragons.
There name comes from a type of elf/troll that used to live underground where he would craft magical metalwork. (trow)(pronounced, d-row)
Gary Gygaxx wanted an evil race of Elf to populate his dungeon, so he developed the sterio-type of the Dark Elf. (1977-79)
From there, it influenced the presence of evil, and often, underground elves in various forms.
The orginal story of how the drow ended up in the dark actually consited of three stages.
The first stage, was Lloth's betrayal of Corellon, and her affiliation with perticular elves.
The second, a devistating plague. (Why humans could become the powerhouse they are). Only Lloth's drow were uneffected.
The third stage was the war which pushed them into the depths of the earth.
Since then, most fantasy worlds borrow aspects of the DnD drow, and alter them to reflect there needs.
The most evil of drow (IMHO) are indistinguishable from other elves, for example.
It could probably be argued that the drow are Tolkien's fault for changing elves into their norse roots instead of leaving them like Pixies or gnomes.

Wiki is god.
Its true though.
The only exception is the evil faerie from Norse mythology which is just an evil elf.
Linage has an extensive creation myth that explains why the dark elves are dark.
I believe that Everquest has a backstory as well.
But, most people rather just say, they are as they are, for no reason beyond I say so.

Like I said, depends on how you do your elves.
My obsidians didn't have to do war or anything to get down there.

I like any story as long as its moral isn't "because I said So."
"They have balck skin because a dragon cursed them as such, and they hide from the sun embarassed about their affliction. They curse the uncursed, and slay them where they slumber, thus the drow earn their name as the most cruel of material races." In two sentances, I made a more compelling argument than I have seen others try.
In other news....
Your friend is dead," Entreri said again, and the dwarf didn't bother to argue the point." And so now you've a choice." "Eat him or starve?" Athrogate asked. "Eat him and eventually starve anyway," Jarlaxle corrected.

The backstory in Everquest is that the Elves were created by Tunare, who made a pact with other gods to kind of..corral the powerbase of Veeshaan, the dragon goddess. Innoruuk, the god of Hate, got pissed becuase he wasn't invited into the pact. in retaliation, since he didn't have 'permission' to create a race, he took the King and Queen of the high elves, and after and through 500 years of constant torture, remolded them into the blue tinted Tier'dal. after which, he placed them under the earth.
