Shin Seiki @Skippy: Yeah, the cost/benefit is pretty clear. It's important for people to remember that it's not all mansions and Bentleys either. Debt + Malpractice + hours worked = upper middle class, unless you're one of those crazy dermatologists or plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills. lilchibiusa I guess it's kind of a good thing. At least this way I won't be wasting hours online on anime and manga when I need to be working on my final papers and stuff. I have more than enough to keep me busy until graduation. I really don't need anymore distractions. But, I keep getting on Gaia because I have to have a study break occasionally to clear my head and relax. I wanted to ask if you were thinking about graduate school. I know it's a common path for English majors. I'm planning on working slowly on my master's degree. I'm going to have to work my way through grad school. I'm already up to my eyeballs in debt, and I can't get any financial aid to go. That's why I'm probably only going to be able to do one class per semester. Hopefully, I can pay off my undergrad loans at the same time. I'm planning on just living with my parents to save money until I can become financially stable and not so deep in debt.

Obama now has all grad PLUS loans directed towards federal funding so I don't see why they wouldn't give you the money. I can understand if you want to pay off your other debts first, but it might be better to just follow through and finish school quickly.

I can get a PLUS Loan? I knew that I was no longer eligible for FAFSA. The problem is that we already have several loans out right now, and we are so behind on paying them and the other bills. We just don't have the money for another load. The lack of money is why I haven't gotten my computer fixed yet. Plus, I like being a student. I want to be a student for as long as possible. heart

Contact your lender (which is actually the federal government now after the bill passed) and request a deferment. You will have to reach full time status again, but you can get more loans. I don't know about Stafford though, but since PLUS is basically a regular loan but with static interest, I don't see why they won't give it to you. Go here and see if you are eligible. You'll need your same FAFSA info, as that is your login. https://studentloans.gov/

Oh and Shin, part of the reason I don't care if I only make 40-50k/year is because I plan on holding out for a sugar mamma. I'll get me a girl that makes 100k+ and just leech off her marry her.
I'm kidding, but that would be awesome. xD

It seems that the mere thought means I'll have to put a lot of things on hold. I can't even imagine having a relationship while trying to study for tests upon tests. I guess I just want that freedom, basically the freedom you have now. It's a little more convoluted but I hope to reach your point as well but doing something I'm interested, despite the BS along the way.

I'm convinced that the best years of my life have already passed. I had such fun and freedom when I lived in the dorms on campus. (I live at home now.) But even when I move out, I will be burdened by bills and responsibilities, and I won't have my best friends down the hall from me. I miss those days. As for marriage, I really can't see myself tied down right now. Actually, it's hard for me to see myself married at all. However, that might change if I ever find the right guy. But, at least I'm not desperate for a guy.

But, at least I'm not desperate for a guy. You know, I used to think this too. Undergrad was a lot of fun and I do miss the friends from the dorms but freedom changes in that sense. Once you're debt free and living on your own, it's a new form of freedom. It'll be a long time before I see it now, but I'll give you an example: I tried doing a little Vegas trip this summer since most of my friends are graduating this year as well (some took an extra year, etc.). Sadly, we're still pretty much shackled to Mommy and Daddy and find it difficult to justify blowing thousands of dollars on a trip just for us. That, and times are tough. 10 years down the line, I won't even have to think twice about that trip as long as I'm fiscally responsible. Money can't buy love but it sure can buy freedom. Honestly, once you pay your dues and make your sacrifices (like living at home to save while in grad school in your case), it all comes back, with interest. The issue now is to endure. As for marriage, I agree with you. I'll never count anything out, but I can't imagine taking another commitment in the near future.

It's a little more convoluted but I hope to reach your point as well but doing something I'm interested, despite the BS along the way. All I know about marriage is that I would like to get married one day. With that said, I only want to be married once. So if I don't think the girl I'm with is ready for that kind of commitment (some can go several years, but as soon as a ring's involved they fall apart), I wouldn't marry her. Now with that said, I should get a girlfriend first. I guess I'm fiscally free sure (other than car debt, but I don't count that). But I've been single for three years, and I'm missing the ball and chain. @Lil: I'm completely opposite. I'm just glad as hell to be out of high school and working full time. My life didn't start until I was done with school. And when it comes down to rent and bills and all that jazz, I'm actually looking forward to paying those things. Well, sort of. I'm looking forward to it because it's another step towards my independence; yet any time I receive a bill I will swear like a sailor and be bitter as hell about it. But I'm an old man so...yeah. I'd already be out of my parents place, but I'm going to save as much money as I can for the next few years and once I'm at around $20/hr and I have a bunch saved up I'll move out. Hopefully by that time I won't be single and it'll be easier too.

I keep saying that once I get financially stabalized, I would like to save up some money and go backpacking through Europe. I don't know if that will ever happen, but it sounds like a nice idea. I just hope I can find a good job soon. I'm graduating with my BA in English in one month. Actually, what would be really cool would be to move to London and start working with some publishing company over there. That would be amazing! xd

Internships, work visas, etc. are just some of the things you may need, not to mention letters of recommendation from your profs or other employers. It's funny because dealing with that stuff makes my head hurt and I just took a neuroscience test yesterday. School sucks sometimes but there are times when job hunting drains my motivation.

Yeah job hunting really sucks. I'm actually lucky I never really had to. The first place I applied to I got a job right away. When I quit that job I took the summer off, then applied at a few places and got hired at Safeway a few months later. And I got the job at Safeway because I don't mind cutting steaks and whatnot -- apparently most people don't like that stuff. Then when I quit Safeway (because I hated it) I already had a job at Petland because they were super short staffed. Then I got a full time job working as labor (connection through a friend), which set me on the path I'm on now. And since Petland sucked (turns out it wasn't Safeway so much as I just hate retail) I decided to quit working both jobs and just work the labor job. Then they laid me off, and I was unemployed for a few weeks and when I finally started to hunt my dad came home and gave me a number for a guy to call and he gave me the job I have now. But he laid me off last fall for a month due to the slow season for him. But he liked the work I did so he wanted me to still have some cash flow, so he got me a job with a friend of his for a month, and then I went back to work with this guy again.
So the only job I've had to wait for has been Safeway. Everywhere else I've known someone, and/or I'm willing to do the stuff that no one else wants to.

That's pretty interesting that you went back and forth between several jobs. I always knew that connections are the best shot but ultimately, I'd like to stay put if I landed a job.
The thing is the variety comes from within the job itself. If I can negotiate my salary and maybe move from hospital to hospital within the same network, that's as much as I'd like to deal with. The problem is getting to work with the right people from the start.
