"I mean, we can follow a trail if you like, but there'll probably be other people, and way less animals," Toby said as he began cooking, "Besides, with Dari we can't get lost."
Dari nodded. His eidetic memory was some throwback from the times when his people had needed to remember important sources. He could definitely find their way out of the woods.

That's right. Dari remembered everything, he probably would be able to find their way back out of the forest. "Off trail is good," she smiled at Toby. "It'd be nice to see some animals." Maybe squirrels. Or a chipmunk. Maybe deer.

"Luckily the whole schpeal about animals and werewolves isn't legitimate," Toby said.
"It's likely because you're not in wolf form and thus not an obvious predator," Dari added. Toby motioned his agreement with an eggy fork.
"It's a good time of year for salamanders too. We'll have to go rock-turning."

Salamanders? Those were the lizards, weren't they? She nodded. "We can do that." She looked to Dari. "Do you know a lot about the plants that grow here?" she asked.

"Yes," Dari replied.
"More than anyone ever should," Toby added.
"It's not like I have erasable memory."
"How does it feel to be so full of so much useless information?"
"Fantastic."
"He's a b*****d to beat at Trivial Pursuit."

Maia looked between the boys, and grinned. "You can tell me about them," she invited. "I don't know much about the native plants." She leaned against the counter. "We can get lunch after hiking."

"You're lucky we're not further south. Then it'd just be Cactus A and Cactus B and Cactus A again and the occasional Dry Tumbleweed X," Toby said, smiling while he cooked. "We could bring food with us? Or we could find some new spot near the trail and really go never-done-before all out."

"We could do that. Have a picnic somewhere?" There were sure to be picnic tables somewhere. She looked into the fridge. "What should we take?" she asked.

Toby shrugged.
"Nothing that needs to be kept too cold or too warm that can't be stuck in a mug," he offered, "Sandwiches? Water. Fruit?" He'd only been on picnics with Maia as of late. He was still getting used to it. "Oh, and the marshmallows."
"What's left of them," Dari murmured.

"Sandwiches," Maia agreed, taking the sandwich ingredients out. "Waters good." She grinned, looking to Dari. "We have more," she assured him.
"What do I wear?"

"The longest anything you have. Pants. If you don't have pants, Dari's pants."

It wasn't an hour and some later when Toby suddenly pointed off into the forest.
"Time to wander off?" With it being November there were reasonably less hikers, but not so few that anything wild was going to wander by.

Maia wasn't sure she liked pants. She picked at the waistline of her jeans and made a face. She took Toby's hand. "Ready. Which way?" She looked around. Whichever way they went, it'd be fun. They didn't have to worry about getting lost, because Dari was there.

"Come on." Toy simply tugged her off into the trees, stepping over rocks and fallen branches and moving steadily away from the path. Dari followed behind easily. He had painted up today just in case they lingered past sundown and he got all... glowy.
"I'll tell you if I see or hear anything," Dari said. Toby smiled to him and took his other hand.

Maia followed Toby, looking around. She was thoroughly enjoying being surrounded by nature. She stepped over rocks and branches, careful not to make much noise in case an animal was near by.

Dari pointed out a bird or squirrel here or there, and as they walked Toby was overturning any rocks that didn't seem especially stuck in the mud. It took a while, but finally he saw a red streak and a reasonably smaller red streak freeze in fear.
"Look, Maia!" Salamanders!
