Red the Ambivalent Vintrict They don't have to. They know and we know what's going on. I honestly want to retire from Gaia. And I don't want to go to valucrap either. I want a new board to roleplay at. Brand new with some people to support it until it becomes our new place. I wouldn't even mind rping at an irc. I started in a chat-based rp on a site, and I feel that's where I need to return. Hah, good luck. I think the majority of us would like to retire and find somewhere new, problem being Gaia has one of the largest numbers in regards to Rping. It would take years to get a board up in numbers, and the customizable avatars here have a huge impact in why so many people come back so often. It's better if I find a board already with members and activity. The avatars are okay, but I've grown out of them long ago. I just hoard lots of gold for the novelty. I did say I would quit once I hit the gold cap on my account, but since that's so easy, I gave up on it.

I've done my share of looking, end up finding a place, joining for a week, then leaving because there aren't enough people to get a decent roleplay going. I've been all over the webz, Gone to all types, always find my way back here.

I'm actually ok with the idea that entertainment as an aspect of a rubric is subjective. That's why you have multiple judges, preferably with varied backgrounds.
This idea that tournaments are going to be completely objective I think misses the point entirely.
The goal in a tournament is to make the judges like you. To make them love your character. To make them want to see your character go ahead because they like your character the most.
I mean sure, having objective criteria in the rubric is fine and even desired.
I just think there needs to be a healthy balance. Throwing out entertainment seems like we are asking people to fight completely for a technical victory.
Like Heita said to me before. Even though Tres used the most viable and appropriate strategy against Erik, it wasn't what, he as someone who has fought me and read my stuff before, wanted to see out of me and that's important.

I don't know if that was the issue, really...Because you can accomplish both factors without sacrificing the other. Being technically proficient as a fighter in an RP combat tournament is KEY, but your presentation of that understanding also needs to be on par. It shouldn't be the judges objective in a contest to say, "Well, I like this character better than that one..." and advance said person with total disregard of how skilled he/she is in battle. At the end of the day, tournaments like this one are equal parts conflict...and cooperative. Where you, and I, went wrong is that we each have legacies; long lists of accolades, and experiences that drove us into the "showdown" mentality. It was gonna be you, or me...and one of us was coming out on top, damn it! Heading into the second half of the fight, we drew our lines in the sand...decided that neither of our characters would "lose" outright...and waited for the judges to sort it out. Neither of us really have anything to prove, and we should've known better...But we stumbled. Happens to everyone, and the only thing to do is knuckle down and do better next time.

I agree in that tournaments are equal parts competition and cooperation. I believe that the competition should be in how we portray our characters, in the same way how an actors skill elevates the narrative of the story they are working together to tell. In the same way that a Pro-wrestler tells a story in the ring. I feel like I'm bogged down because I need to be technically superior or even technically sufficient. The thing that I worry about honestly, is "If I put my opponent over, my score will suffer for it". I want to take hits. I want to sell. I want to write about Tres screwing up and being punished for it. I want to convey that Tres is a human being and he makes mistakes. There is an incentive not to do that, A. Because of the rubrics and B. Because I fight people who 'will' end the fight if I give them the opportunity to do so. However, I like to think that I'm good enough to be entertaining and be technical, which is what I tend to fall back on. So B. isn't that much of a problem. The problem in tournaments is that, save for your 'logic' score there is no incentive to making your opponent look good, especially at your own expense. I cannot tell you how many times I've gotten from judges: "Sieg, you are overselling." Luckily we endeavored half way through our match to cut the bullshit and put each other over.

Truthfully, you just summed up the real problem without really -saying- it. Judge staff needs to be held accountable. Not after the tournament starts, or during fight grading, but before they even start accepting profiles; not just anyone has the appropriate skills, experience, of comprehension to weigh out events as they occur here-in. You can't just look at the conclusion of a battle and say, "Well, Bo-joke-a got the last hit on Ertai...and it looked pretty serious...so he wins because he was winning." You need a person who could sift through nuance, and make their own inferences based on what they read. If an attack seems questionable...then question it! Don't just say, "Tres allowed it, so I guess it's sound." Naturally, we affirm the appointment of judge staff by participating...but some of us are just starved for an event...ANY event.
