"It sure will!" Jasta beamed as she sat down on the edge of the blanket and made herself comfortable.
"Help yourselves to the snacks," Jess invited them, motioning to the food with one hand.
There were freshly baked cookies, a vanilla cake, some buns (still warm from the oven), some fruit (apples and berries), and even a small basket of candies.
"Mama didn't know what you all would like," Jess smiled with a blush as he waited for his friends to help themselves first.
Amalirahc reached for the buns immediately, but River took a cookie instead.
"I think it's safe to say we like pretty much anything," she giggled as she took her first bite.

There were so many good things to eat, Miyuki's eyes were wide. She took a piece of the vanilla cake, it smelled so good. Her tail swished back and forth in pleasure.
"Thank you," she replied, "Please say thank you to your mother for us."

"We will," Jess grinned, taking an apple.
The other boys they'd been playing with sat on the edge of the blanket as well and helped themselves to some of the snacks, though they seemed to be keeping to themselves rather than trying to interact much with the others.
"So Miyuki," Jasta said softly, settling a bit closer to her, "what is your race called?"

It was the first time anyone had really asked that, normally it was a question that her mother had fielded not that Miyuki knew that. She looked up at her cake and smiled.
"They're called kitsune."

"Kit-su-nay," Jasta repeated slowly. She tilted her head slightly. "What language is that? It doesn't sound like a language I've heard before ..."
Like Miyuki's name, it had a different sound to it, a sound that was entirely un-elvish. But if elves spoke elvish, maybe kitsunes spoke ...
"Kit-su-nish?" she guessed.

Miyuki smiled at that, she wished and it had struck her as curious that some races didn't have their own language, but took one of the many human languages that existed.
"Japanese," she replied, "I know it doesn't make sense, but mommy said that kitsunes hid among humans on in a small island nation called Japan a long long time ago. Kitsune was the name that they gave to people like me."

Jasta blinked at Miyuki. That was an interesting story, all right, and she wanted to hear more about it, but ...
"How could they hide among humans?" she asked, puzzled. "You don't look human at all! I look more human than you do!"

Miyuki thought about it, her mommy hadn't expanded on that part.
"I... don't know," she felt on top of her head, "I can see how to hide the ears, but I can't imagine how one could hide all the tails."
And she heard once that kitsunes could have up to nine of them! She just had trouble with the number she had now. How was that possible, she hummed and hawwed at this. What would she look like without them she wondered....
Things would be certainly easier if she could hide among humans or even elves for that matter. She tried imagining herself hiding among humans, and that didn't work because she couldn't imagine why she would want to. Then she tried imagining herself hiding among elves, which made so much more sense. The more she thought about it, the more she could kind of imagine it.
What Miyuki wasn't realizing was that the more she was thinking about it the more she was changing, but it wasn't a growth. Instead her ears were shrinking and so where her tails, until she looked like a funnily coloured elven child. (Funny because she still kept her usual dual hair colour).

Jasta stared at Miyuki, her expression both dubious and amazed.
"Um ... that doesn't make any sense," she said, confused. "You say you can't imagine it, but ... you just did it."
She had just changed, right in front of Jasta's eyes! How could she not know?

"Just did what?" Miyuki asked sitting back a bit to allow her tails to curl around her.
Except there were no tails to curl, and she noticed this lack of furry feeling and looked down.
"Where did my tails go?"

Jasta stared at Miyuki. "I don't know," she replied slowly. "You were talking about blending in with humans and then they disappeared. And your ears, too. You look human now."
It gave credibility to the story about kitsunes living amongst the humans in the land called Japan.

Miyuki felt her behind, there were no tails and really tried not to panic because despite her inner complaints she liked her tails. She really liked her tails.
She felt the top of her head, and there were no ears, how was she supposed to hear anything? Well she obviously heard something she thought as she brought her hands down the side of her face. Despite all her running around, she forgot to get anyone to braid her hair, which was obvious as she pushed back her hair around her new ears.
It was weird! She could keep her hair out of her face with her new... pointed.. wait pointed? Humans didn't have pointy ears.
"That feels weird," she finally spoke up.

Jasta leaned to the side a bit to see Miyuki's new ears. She grinned. "Neat!" she exclaimed. "Elven ears!" She giggled. "Wow, now you could almost blend in here! Except that your hair is a different colour, of course."
She didn't think anything of it - she knew Miyuki was at the age (at least she looked it) where, if she were an elf, her magic would be manifesting. So to her it wasn't anything strange that Miyuki would suddenly have a new ability.

Miyuki did admit, her hair colour did give away the whole foxy vibe to her. She couldn't help but wonder if all kitsunes had her hair colour or if it was just her.
"Well that's okay, if my hair changed colour then I would really freak out, I like my hair colour."
Just like she liked her tails, now how does she undo this?

Jasta pulled her own long, golden hair in front of her and stroked it fondly. "I wouldn't want to change my hair colour either," she murmured softly. "I like the way I am."
No, if there was a change she could wish for, it would be to be healthy again so that she could play her brother's favourite game with him - even though she knew it wasn't possible. Besides, being a semi-invalid had given them a bond which many other siblings didn't have. The other boys ran away from their sisters, left them to play with their friends instead; but Jess always made time for her. He made her feel special.
