It depends on the music, but often I do, or at least perform some other physical movement (particularly for upbeat pieces or when practising marches). The problem a lot of music teachers and directors I've seen have with it is people can lag a fraction with it, and as a consiquence get out of time

My band director makes us tap our feet to keep tempo. Your director sounds like a jerk.

Same here. Tapping your toes alone is easier, and more quiet.

I tap my toes when we're doing very complicated ryhthms or long run to keep it steady, but normally I don't.Its mostly my internal pulse doing the trick.

Lol. It's completely normal.... well for me. I tap my foot at the bus stop, in class, in a restaurant, even during a concert. Though you do have to be really quiet. Most of the time the floors are made out of wood... The good ones anyway.

Tapping your foot is okay, but do it lightly. There are people in the back row who tap their foot so loud it makes you want to kill yourself. One time someone started swearing really loud out of the fact that people kept tapping their foot so loudly. xp

My tapping only happens when I'm in a really a difficult part that I have trouble with. And my BD LOVES it when we tap our feet.

My band director always told us to tap our toes and even threatened us saying that if we didn't we would have to move out butts to the music. He claimed he'd seen another band doing this and all their heads were bobbing up and down a little to the music as they kept time with their butts. LOL

I tap my finger on my bass's neck normally but if the music it's has an annoying rhythm I tap my foot. The tuba player next to be counts out loud which is quite distracting cause he has loads of rests but it is useful if I'm lost.

Our teacher made us tap our foot and if we didn't tap our foot during the music tests, he would mark us down. But I can't keep time without tapping!!!

River Angel Odin Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad? My band is one of the best bands in California, and guess what, we are usually told to tap our feet. Oh, and guess what? I too met a proffessional teacher, and he was my tutor(cost like $400 -_-) And he said tapping your foot is EXTREMELY helpful.
