I play Oboe and Clarinet as my main instruments. I am the only oboe in my band, but this year, no concert crying

ok, so i've played alto sax for *thinks* 6 years. but as its a rather popular instrument, i figured i should take up a rarer instrument, y'know, so if i get good its much more desired than a sax. ..plus....an oboe just damn well sounded fun XD... its pretty ^.^
i rented an oboe yesterday, so i haven't had it long >.>; and...i basicly know what you're supposed to do with your mouth 'n the like, but, i still fail to make a noise >.>: ...*cough* any tips and instructions from those who actually know what they're doing?
next tuesday, after my sax lesson, i'll be picking up the book The Art of the Oboe (they had to order it)

So, i've played flute for five years. Recently i've been playing oboe. I've gotten very good very fast, but my right thumb always hurts like a b***h after just a little while of playing. Is there any particular way I should hold my thumb as to make it hurt less? Or should I just suck it up?

I've gotten very good very fast, but my right thumb always hurts like a b***h after just a little while of playing. Is there any particular way I should hold my thumb as to make it hurt less? Or should I just suck it up?
You could get a thumb pad, and stick it on the thumb rest thing... that might help. Or Maybe you need to change the position of your hand. You could have someone who plays oboe professionally or knows about them to look at your grip. My thumb is actually kinda bent out of shape from playing oboe sad but whatever... I'm probably holding it wrong.

I play bassoon! (Wo0T 0_o) I've played it for ohhhhh I'd say about four...five school years. I also play flute for marching band...but who cares. Bassoon is teh best. I made the cuts to the Wind Ensamble, so next year I'm going to be in my school's top band!!! *squee!!*
...Ahhhh, yeah.
