Sad, I'm only a Hornist now! I'm a baritone on the field, and the mellos call me a traitor now.

I'm a French Horn section Leader and it rocks! exclaim Even though I'v only been playing french horn for a year because i originally played trumpet but we were short on horns last marching season and my band director asked me to swich and i said yes, but i liked horn better than trumpet so i stuck with it and heart it!

I've been playing the French Horn for five years....but my mouth is smaller then the damn mouth piece so...I suck!! Now I get to play the trumpet...but I don't think that will last very long...Harriet (My Horn) needs me!

yay! other people who play french horn! around me, the french horn is a very small portion of the band. this past year, we had 5 in symphonic band, and none in concert band. but one graduated, so now there's going to be 4 sym.'s and a new con - assuming she's smart enough to continue band *shakes fist* but now, two are going to be seniors, and then there's only me and my friend *sob* we're sooo outnumbered!
the the one thing that irks me about being a french horn - there's hardly any good parts in the music we play, and when we do have a good part, you can't hear it since there's so few of us and our bells face backwards. for example - this year, we playes "selections from phantom of the opera" in our spring concert, and the french horns had a melody (along with other instruments...) a few times. but, on the cd recording, you can barely hear us! i only know it's there because it's engraved into my brain. if you don't know it's there, it doesn't hit you like "wow...those french horns are pretty good." but, "phantom" makes up for it a bit - there's a few spots where it's ONLY the first french horn. like - dead silence from the rest of the band, one person playing. that was pretty awesome. now, whenever i hear it, i'm like "sshh! listen! *listens* that was becky!"
*for the record, i'm sorry if i've repeated anyone's comment. i didn't read all of the pages - this is really long!

I know what you mean about the music, but don't you have the reflector things? We have these 2'x2' sheets of plexi-glas mounted on wood behind our bells to reflect our sound forward.

yeah, im a french horn section leader at my school also. im first chair in the top band and im a junior. my freshman year, there was only 4 of us and we were ALL freshman. now there are 9 which is like, a record for our school. most schools have like, 20 or so but our school is real small so of course the band is. FRENCH HORN ROCKS MY SOCKS! xd

actually, we have a giant shell that goes behind the whole band. however, it's downfall is that the french horns sit on the end >.< all of our sound goes straight into the other band, or an empty space between the bands. crying but, in another song we play, there's a few measures where it's me, my friends becky and katie was a senior -she graduated- but it was jsut us - jsut a little thing. they had a Dflat on the staff, i had an octave down, and we hit it PERFECT it sounds so awesome *drools*and! you can actually hear it

one of my friends plays french horn and mello, and trumpet, and i think he's up to 5-6 brass instruments, and a guitar...but anyways! he was in marching band (he jsut graduated highschool) and he's an awesome bando, so he would get solos, but they never let him play them on his mello. he always had to play his trumpet. so, now he's vowed that some day he will compose a solo for the mello 3nodding

MELOPHONES ARE EVIL!!! take this as a warning if you don't play one. They are almost ALWAYS out of tune HARD TO HOLD and TERRIBLE SOUNDING. I HATE THE MELOPHONE
But the french horn rocks... Yes... It's so pretty and nice and wonderful sounding... It makes lovely noises unless you suck then it sounds like dying cows.

Mellos are out of tune all of the time. They have bells that are hard to see in front of...and they sound strange, but it's all part of the fun. blaugh

mello'a aren't always out of tune - jsut most of the time. but if you never move your slides, it's alright.
and the hard-to-hold thing in a matter of opinion. when you're sitting down, it's alright because you can rest your elbows on your belt, standing up is harder, though.
and they don't sound terrible!!! scream
