Arishi Zasar heaved his shoulders in a shrug. “Mosly odd jobs now. Movin’ crates ‘round theh harbour’n all that. Sometimes some mercenary ’lated stuff. Not very o’en though. “I’d ne’er get bored’ve the waers. Wish I coul’ leave n’ head out on ‘em. Not a very brigh’ idea though.” He squinted, peering out into the rain. "Sounds like a waste of talent," Mercy answered as she decided that they should try through a covered alley, "I guess if it was something that you love then there is no worry that you would possible forget how to do it, I mean, being able to run a ship and stay out to the water." She shook a moment as the cover was better then being drenched by the not so clean rain water.
"I wonder what the sea is like? Is it as salty as they say?" she had addressed the question a little low more for herself then for anyone else, but it was loud enough for anyone near could have heard.

Grondax turned his vision towards the dark tower as they reached the crest of the stairs taking a minute to allow himself a sigh. He then walked down the hall to the right and opened a pair of twin large oak doors. As they stepped inside it looked more as if the room belonged to the young daughter of the house.
The room was roughly the size of an entire floor of a normal house. From the entrance there was a large bed directly across from them. On either side stood two large stained glass windows with strange scenery drawn in the glass of roses and thorns. On the right wall there was a small weapons cabinet with bo staves, daggers, and several other weapons as well as a sparing dummy next to it. There were also several cabinets, drawers, and a large full body mirror. This image so far could perhaps coincide with that of a hardened general; however, to the left wall there was nothing but constructed shelves of the most ornate dolls imaginable. There were dolls of every shape and size, not all human, each more breathtaking than the last. Very well made rigid female dolls seemed to be given the most important places on the shelves. To the side there were several small tables with tea sets.
Grondax approached and lifted the chin of one of the finest dolls. "I won't lie," started the baron, "I suppose I didn't have much choice in the matter to start with. I was trained from youth to serve this family as a butler. It was through my skill that I ascended to be a general, and through family need that I became a baron under them. This really has been the only life I have ever known."
Grondax turned back and headed towards a drawer, "That said someone who is simply doing his duty doesn't gain the rank that I have. A long time ago I realized something. Being a soldier doesn't make you good, a hero of justice. If anything it taints you into the depths of your soul; however, I have accepted that taint. I decided that I would pursue any means to any ends that could protect the beauty of this world. Those dolls over there represent that beauty. A constant reminder to me and my path."
Grondax seemed to find what he was looking for and returned to the lieutenants side, "While I cannot openly state my feelings outside this room I have sworn to eventually use my power to free this place from that which would destroy its beauty. My actions may eventually put me on the level of Sekhet, who can tell. I could even go down in history as an equally despised man. None of that matters. I still see beauty in even this place. If I must prune and weed this place as one would a garden to preserve that beauty then so be it. I have simply lost my gardeners sheers, my army. The question is what force, what army, could stand up to what surrounds our walls. I have leads, only today I saw a being controlled by a young girl of impressive strength, but I cannot tell how far off my dream may be." Grondax trailed off at the end realizing he was ranting on.
“I may seem loose in my words,” Grondax stated simply as he held out his hand, “but you have proven to me your skill and mettle. You are one of a select few that have heard this speech. Now it is your turn to talk. If your feelings resonate with my own, if you feel that this place should be liberated from its shackles, if you would use yourself as a shield for this world, for honor and pride, for the knowledge that you didn’t sit back and let this happen without trying to do something, then I offer you this,” Grondax opened his hand to reveal a rose shaped pin the same as the one he himself wore on his breast, “A medal if you will, the highest honor I can present you at this time. Those that see you with this pin, and understand its meaning, will understand your struggle. People who would otherwise steal and rob from you will see it and bow their heads in respect for your actions. I do not and can not ask you to accept this. I will not pretend the burden is not there. You can walk away now and we will part tonight friends. Otherwise I fully reinstate to your rank under my command, and will contact you with work as a comrade.”

The first thing that struck Valerius was the size of the room. It was about as large as the first floor and secon floor of the shop where he lived combined, perhaps a little larger.
As he gazed around the room, Valerius couldn't help but become jealous. The windows on each side contained scenery for the general to practice camouflaging himself in, while a cabinet was so full of weaponry that he had to exercise extreme restraint to keep himself from rushing over to it and talking in half-formed excited bursts of sentences.
Even with this, Valerius would have been quite impressed. However, the general had even constructed human mannequins for him to practice his techniques on. The dolls were very beautiful, the strategy behind which Valerius admired: the hardest enemy to kill was a beautiful one. The general was clearly trying to eliminate the weaknesses that hostiles could use against him. The entire room served as a training grounds.
Valerius heard the general's speech out, considering different parts of it as he formulated his response. "Sir, with regard to your earlier comments, I must respectfully disagree. Being in battle may taint you with the blood of your enemies and the weight of their murders, I agree with you there. However...there's something more to it. Fighting to regain the lost, to rescue the hopeless, there's something in that which can cleanse you of those evils and restore you to what you were." Val wasn't used to long monologues about his worldview--he liked to keep things sort and sweet. "If anything, it's a system of balance. A battle between the light and dark in a human soul."
"For those words, I will accept any reprimand you deem appropriate. It was a necessary insubordinance. As to your offer, I will join you on one condition."
Valerius had never received a medal before. His grandfather had received loads of them for saving lives, and Valerius still had those saved away in a cubby-hole beneath a floorboard back home. He'd taken those medals out and looked at them before, but this medal was different. Just seeing it sparkle in Grondax's hand was enough to make him want to leap up and hug the general. Given the seriousness of the conversation a moment before, though, he judged this not to be a wise idea.
Despite that, Valerius had slight misgivings about serving under someone for an extended period of time. The wound on his arm throbbed. The folded scrap paper he always kept with him was burning a hole into his pocket, searing the skin, reminding him about the last time...
He bit his lip, trying not to recall the incident. He always seemed to remember it at night, in his dreams and waking fantasies...
"My condition is as thus: I am no tool, no garden sheer for you to use against the rough bushes of this city. I would, though, be a comrade, an ally. I do not want equal rank; that would be absurd. With that in mind, I accept your token with gratitude. I will do all within my power to assist you honorably."
Valerius took the pin from Grondax's outstreched hand, and pinned it on. He accidentally stuck himself with the sharp end through the thin cloth of his shirt before closing the clasp correctly. Honor and pride could be painful.

Hikari took an alarmed step backwards seeing the doctor the way he was. It scared her an unmeaserable amount. He wouldnt do anything to them, that was his own words. She tried to tell herself this over and over again to calm her racing nerves but it didnt seem to cease the increase in her heartbeat.
"Doctor Sev..." Her voice quivered in fear as she stared at him cautiously. "...c-c-calm down n-now..."

Dr. Oddssen unconsciously bit down on one of the finger of his left hand, hard, trying to control the rising panic in his body and mind. Hikari could easily connect the other bitemarks that Sev had no thought to hide, with what he was currently doing. She would then realize how all the wounds were most likely self-alfficted.
The Doctor was sick in heart and soul, the infliction growing stronger over his years of solitude.
The hallucinations were small, and frequent, but he tore his eyes away from them and focussed on Hikari's face. He knew that if he kept his eyes still, the terrors of the shadows might leave. He dropped his hand to his side to speak, taking a deep, shaky breath, "I-I... I'm not well, Miss Hikari." He began, stating the obvious to stall for time. "Give me a moment and I shall be fine, it is nothing really.. Just a small fit, they, ah... come and go. Atleast they did with my patients.. Short breakouts, you see?"
During the time he had spoken, Severin regulating his breathing to help ease his own fluttering heart, until his pulse calmed and he was once more in control of himself. Averting his eyes to the ground respectfully, he set about looking to Yami. "I'll tend to your sister, now.. If it is alright with you."

Grondax stood lost in thought as Valerius took the rose pin. He had used to think as this man had, but he learned that no matter the purity of the goal the bloodshed and malice always seemed to outweigh the gain in his heart. He realized that he was thinking to himself, and looked up to see that Valerius had already attached the pin. Grondax attempted a smile, "Of course Lieutenant, the strongest military leaders of their times were such due to the fact that they had the trust of those that followed them. They then returned that trust in their soldiers. You will assist me, because you trust in our goals. I in turn trust you to use your judgment and skills as an ally, not as a tool. Tools can be found anywhere. You have ascended that distinction. I would not expect a tool to have my back when the going was tough."
Grondax opened the door and called for Smith, "For the record, I will never consider speaking your mind to be insubordinate. Quite the opposite in fact," Grondax again smiled weakly, "I can only hope that even I can be saved of the darkness in my heart. A fanciful dream to be sure, but I would much prefer you to be right."
Smith had reached the top of the stairs and bowed, "What do you require tonight sir?" Smith asked thoughtfully.
"The lieutenant here requires an escort to his home in the harbor." Grondax handed the man a note, "Also, if you could gather these supplies at your leisure to be delivered to our new pawn shop tomorrow I would be grateful as well."
Smith bowed and looked to Valerius. He noticed the pin on his chest; the same that Grondax and he himself wore, and bowed to him as well. "Very well lieutenant," Smith smiled, "The harbor is not far from here. You will find yourself home before you realize it. Right this way sir."
Smith began to descend the stairs. Grondax nodded to Valerius, “You did well tonight. If something comes up I will be sure to contact you. Likewise feel free to contact me with any information or concerns. I am normally about during the day, but if you head to that pawn shop you will be able to discern my whereabouts. I hope for you a good night.” Grondax stood waiting, as was proper, for Valerius to leave before retreating to the safety of his room.

"Psh..." he watched as they left. "...When do merchants have the callouses of a swordsman." he snorted out. He adjusted how the mask sat upon his face. He could still feel the coldness from it seeping into his face. It chilled him, hardened him. It was a sign that he did not make it through his past unscarred.
He gathered the last of the supplies that were left there and made his way out of the abandoned building. His steps carried him to the red rat and once inside his little section, he began to set up shop. Properly and as cleanly as could be managed in this filth ridden town.
With the shop set up, he locked the door and made his way back out into the rain. He did not care that he still had his mask on, it was like a shell to him. A shell he needed right now, not that there was anyone around. He made sure to keep to the paths that were devoid of life, all but his own as he entered the Lost District.

Hikari gasped when she saw the doctors teeth sink into his own skin and instantly made the connection. She was far from dumb, and there was no doubt he had caused all his wounds. A small fit? Usually biting yourself wasnt what she concidered...small.
She trembled and she could feel her chest tighten as she took a step forward, his request to help her sister ringing like a sour chord in her ear. "N-N-no. Y-You may n-not..." again another step forward. Was she moving to Yami? Or the doctor?
"Y-you...should go take care of yourself..." she hated those words that came out of her mouth. Wished to grab the air before her and pull them back to herself, but she kept on as firm as an expression as she could "P-People will...uh...notice your wounds...you know? G-Go wash...up, and um...I'll take c-care of my sister..."

At that small moment, Yami began to stir. Moaning a bit, she squinted and turned, though the result of it all, still ended up as Yami still lifeless in front of her sister...and the doctor.

The Doctor shuffled and peered at his feet, thinking this all over in his mind. His eyes snapped up when he heard Yami stir, but he kept himself from checking on her, knowing that hikari would get upset. Well.. more upset.
"I.. understand." Dr. Oddssen said quietly, making it so his hands were hidden in his jacket sleeves. The man was troubled, that was obvious, and he was having a mental fight about what he should do. He felt obligated to help the daughters of his victim in some way, thinking that it might ease the pain somehow.
"She looks like she'll be fine.. I'm.. I'm sorry to have caused you so much distress, Miss Chou."

Hikari in her mind bitterly thought she couldnt have minded if right then and there the doctor was taken by the Peace Enforcement. But the truth of the whole matter was, she wasnt that kind of person and just seeing the doctor upset about not being able to help Yami made her feel bad.
Honestly, she wasnt sure why. She should have hated the man- after all the beast ate her father. But it was just her character she supposed that caused her to sigh out in distress before looking at the doctor carefully "go wash up..." she spoke softly, almost defeatidly "then could you bring me a bucket of water? I think we need to hurry up and take care of my sister, dont you think?"
And with that she knelt down besides the girl and stroked her bangs in an affectionate sisterly manner, not once glancing back at the doctor to see what his reaction would be

"I.. I will, Miss." Dr. Severin said, his voice calm and quiet once more. He stood and watched her tend to her sister for a moment before forcing his eyes away to look where Annie and Larry had gotten to. He spotted them chatting, and Annie obviously wanted to see Larry's child.
"Excuse me, Miss," The Doctor said, hastily walking over as much as his slight limp could provide. It was nothing near the woman's crippled leg, but it was enough to be evident and impair him, causing him pain. "Is there any water we could possibley use? A bucket, perhaps?"

Annie's eyes snapped to the face of the man who addressed her, a wave of aggitation rising within her. She pushed it down with a firm resolve, and studied him. He walked with a limp, which increased her empathy for him. However, she had no reason to like the man, considering she didn't know him at all. But something about his lanky, almost trembling form forced a kind of grudging acceptance into Annie's cynical little mind, and she rose with a grimace. "Hand me my cane, will you?" She asked, gesturing to the wooden cane, which was within the doctor's reach. "And yes, there's just some water behind the counter. I'll have to get it, no one but employees, you see."
Her eyes darted past the man to the two girls sitting on the floor. She lowered her voice to a level she hoped only the doctor and herself could hear. "Hey, has she been giving you a hard time?" She asked. Annie wasn't blind, her handicap existed elsewhere, she could plainly see that for whatever reason, Hikari was showing aggression towards the man. Why? She didn't know, but that wasn't the point. After all, the man was trying to save her sister! Indignation rose in Annie's throat, but she squashed that emotion, as well. It would not do for her to lose her temper around so many people.

Severin glanced in the direction Annie motioned to and gently handed her the cane, making no flicker of emotion in his face change. He didn't want to give her sympathy that other's might, he could imagine how frusterating that would get. Since, she was still a person, al beit one with a crippled leg.. that changed just the way she walked, nothing more.
The Doctor was startled by Annie's pointed question, his eyes flickering back to Hikari's figure bent over Yami's still form. "Nothing I do not deserve, Miss. I'm afraid I have a history with the girl's father that she has every right to be upset about."

Annie accepted the cane with murmured thanks, and breathed a sigh of relief after she let the cane accept the weight of her body previously taken by her crippled leg. She moved towards the counter, gesturing that the man should wait in front of it. Annie swung herself down and under the counter, a move she practiced many times, using her cane as leverage, and stood up on the other side. She rumaged around the kitchen for a few moments before producing a cloth, and a large bowl of warm water. "Here." She said breathlessly, and slid back under the counter. She stood up with her cane, shaking slightly, and handed the bowl and cloth over to the doctor.
"Hmmph." She shook her head, pursing her lips as she thought over the doctor's previous statement, as if she didn't think a faux pas with a parent was enough to begrudge a man. "There's more water if you need it. Do you want me to help?" It was a tactful suggestion, considering that Annie privately thought that the man was too frail to stand.
