Rota had slain the first of the...things...and as he expected, there were more of them on the way. He was just about sick of this and his chest welled up with light as he roared fire into the ceiling of the cavern, and watched as it rained down on the beasts below. With any luck, this would annihilate them before they got too much headway on him.

Unborn gain immunity to fire, and deal 1 fire damage for 3 rounds
The three spiders are struck by the flames, and, as it washes over them, they begin to glow with the fire, but are not harmed by it. Their venom becomes red hot, and sizzles when it touches the ground, leaving small, candle-like pyres on the stone. Each lunges at Rota, but none get past his armor.
So lesson learned. Lighting them on fire did nothing but make them nettled. This didn't make them so they could hurt him, but it did exactly nothing so there was that. He looked to find one that was the most unbalanced and slammed the blade of the greatsword down with conviction and authority. Now that the menace was gone he was mildly unimpressed, save for their ability to absorb his fire.

The unborn that Rota had struck was cleft in twain s it tried to bite Rota's ankles, and it turned into a single mote of light as the other two Unborn attacked in tandem. The mote of light shot toward the spider that had attacked Rota with the most intensity. The burning venom from the creature dripped disgustingly, and its form began to ripple, appearing to drain the light from the air around it. The Unborn grew to a size almost twice as large as it had been, and grew more terrifyingly fierce in appearance. It roared, assimilating the energy of the fallen.

"Okay...little more impressed now." Rota really should have expected another catch. Something this important to seal away had to have another catch. he wasn't going to take many chances here. He positioned himself in between his assailants and buried the tip of his sword in the ground. in a flash, he brought it up the front of one of the creatures and with the same motion down the other, burying the tip into the ground again. he had never attempted spin in this way before, so it was time to see if it was effective in any degree. he had so many questions about the nature of these things, but that would have to wait until they were dead and he was safe.

"...Cute..." These things really interested Rota now. Learning how they worked would be a great boon if they weren't biological beings. learning the secret to how they became immune to fire would be a great asset in the future if he ran into fire damage again. he still had flashbacks to the blacksmith fight every now and again. That said, he needed to conserve stamina just in case there were even more of these waiting after this one died. he had already been caught with his pants down as far as burning out way to damn quickly. He needed to get better about that. Either way he wheeled around towards big ugly and slammed his sword down as hard as he could.

As Rota sinks his blade into the beast, it disappears in much the same way as the others, flashing and then fading out of existence.
All is still, and it seems as if the battle is over.
Rota hears the sound of stones trickling across the floor in the silence. And then a soft rumbling begins to creep through his boots. The tunnel begins to shake as the darkness before his eyes begins to slither.
And then he could see them, faintly illuminated by the lantern's light, stampeding toward the man on every inch of the cylindrical tunnel, turning the walls into writhing black rivers.

The Unborn were poised to crash into Rota, but at the last second the river of monsters parted and flowed around him. It became clear that they were not coming to swarm Rota. They were... Oh, God. They were escaping! Rota watched, helpless, as the swarm of Unborn stampeded down the tunnel, a myriad of disparate creatures all shaped out of shadow pouring through the darkness. There was no way to defeat them all. There was no way to stop them. The tunnels were completely stable, there was no way to cave them in. The Unborn would pour into the Gloomwood. They were free.
The tunnel grew quiet as the creatures disappeared into the shadows behind Rota, and a faint light was seen before him. With nowhere else to go, Rota walked toward the light.
You come upon a large vault door, much the same as the one that you had opened to come into this area. But this one already had something in its keyhole. A distorted, shadowy orb sucked the light out of the surrounding area and seemed to keep the door sealed. This door was smooth on this side, lacking the intricate engraving that these structures usually bore. It must not have been meant to have been viewed from this side. The broken lantern reacted powerfully to this area, and the light that it produced was enough to illuminate the cavern, save for what was being swallowed hungrily by the lock placed on the door.
It looked like it was held in place only by the force of its distortion.

And Rota was suddenly in front of yet another door. he had had bad luck with these things in the past...but ******** it, he was never one to learn particularly reasonable lessons. he stabbed his sword into the ground and pulled on the dark orb with his left hand, wrenching it from its position as forcibly as his muscles would allow.
Posted: Sun Sep 04, 2016 12:34 am
As you grip the orb, it hungrily drinks your life force, and as you pull it from the socket, you feel the orb trying to stay in place. Fighting that resistance, you free the lock, and the orb seems to quiet down, its hungry aura reducing to a small, dark spiral around your hand.
The door begins to melt away in a process that has become familiar to you, and pinpricks of light begin to pour through the door. Your eyes are dazzled by a brilliant inpouring of natural light, and they are useless until the door has disappeared completely. As your eyes begin to adjust, you make out trees, tall, deciduous, autumnal. The world has become a brilliant, summery wood. Warm air pours into the cool tunnel, and you are faced with a world familiar, but somehow completely alien. It is as if the Gloomwood was alive again, as it might have been in times long since past.
~CONGRATULATIONS!!!~ YOU HAVE DISCOVERED:
The Goldenwood

As intrigued as Rota was to continue into beyond the door, the time for adventure was done. he decided to go back to his forge, following the lantern out of this labyrinth. he had a feeling Alyxandeyr was going to want to see this.
Spider1: HP: 20 -40 to all combat rolls Immune to effects 1 poison damage for 3 rounds will always attack
Hemlocke was conjured into existence and took a breath of the musty air that permeated the Gloomwood. She forked over some mushrooms and wood that she'd collected from Alyx and Cthaer, and was now queued for several quests: she needed to kill a boar, she needed to kill ten spiders, she needed to parry and evade in one battle, and she needed to harvest motes of light to return to the Lightcaster. Clearly, she was still enraptured by the display of the woman and her magic, and was anxious to learn how magic worked in this world. She ventured over to the cave of the gloomweave spiders, and picked her target. Looking down at the pendant hanging from her belt, and the red jewel set inside it, she wondered if she was going to have enough power to survive this encounter. The system assist guided her through her first application of the skill. The girl watched her hand extend, and felt a subtle energy gather into her pale palm, light swirling until it coalesced into a small luminous ball, glowing soft white. With a flick of her wrist, she sent the ball streaking toward a nearby spider.

Hemlocke 21-8=13/4=3 damage to Spider1 Spider1 17-27=evaded by Hemlocke
Hemlocke watched the small ball of light zip through the air, leaving a shimmering trail in its wake. It struck the spider on what might be called the 'shoulder', and the creature took a small amount of damage. It wasn't extravagant, but it was an amount of health that her enemy no longer had, and that was good enough for her. She figured that she'd get [bob and weave] out of the way. Putting her hands together, Locke imagined light flowing between her palms, and a shining trail wound its way up her body from the focusing talisman on her hip, spiraling behind her back and then down her right arm to coalesce into a brilliant, glittering cloud in her hands. As the spider came back at her, she spread her hands apart, aiming to create a streak of light that would arc between her palms and intercept the spider's attack. She planted her feet and braced for the possibility that she wasn't able to block the strike.
