Vyntyr frowned. She'd given it thought before, and she knew what she wished the answer was, but she also knew that she just wasn't good enough for it. "Well, to be honest... Shii-cho seems a little unlikely to me. How many times are we going to be fighting multiple lightsaber combatants? Soresu makes for very long fights, and I don't have the stamina for that, pain or no pain. Djem so and shien are both good styles, but I feel like I'd have to dedicate too much time to getting proficient with both of them to be good at either of them. Niman is attractive, as an easy way out, but if I get into a fight, I'm not sure I can count on how unspecialized it is... So I guess makashi. It's not an incredibly mobile style, so I can actually do it, and if I'm going to get into a lightsaber fight, it's probably going to be against one person."
Master Laro nodded. "You've given this some thought. but why do you sound conflicted about your answer, young padawan?"

Vyntyr imagined herself flipping and flying through the air and across the battlefield, a positively unstoppable Force of nature, cartwheeling and spinning across the battlefield like a whirling dervish of combat prowess. But... "Well, I have to accept my constraints. My limitations. To be completely honest, I don't really have a choice in the matter. Makashi and niman are the styles I really have to choose from, because they are the least physically demanding, and out of those two, I would rather practice makashi, because at least then I am prepared for one type of battle, rather than being marginally prepared for anything."
"It is wise to accept your own shortcomings, and you are very wise to be able to see them. What style would you practice if you could practice anything at all?"

Vyntyr blushed softly, looking down at her feet as they walked. "I don't know... I mean, I've always thought..."
Master Laro understood. "Thought what, young one?"
"Well, to be honest, I've always kind of daydreamed about ataru... I mean, I was never the most physical fighter, but something about merging the Force and the body to such a degree always seemed like a grand sort of adventure to me. I know that I could never manage it, though. I'm barely flexible and agile enough to have a passable alchaka, I'm not going to be able to manage such an acrobatic style for more than a few seconds."
Master Laro frowned, feeling for the child. "That could certainly be a problem. But do not despair. The future is as yet unseen. Who knows where it will take us?"

Vyntyr nodded, thought still doubtful. She just wasn't meant to practice ataru, regardless of what she felt. They were finally at the training grounds, and Vyntyr went to a console to call a droid up in an empty arena. She set it for some of the lowest settings she could go for --she was really not very good at lightsaber combat-- and hit the enter button, stepping into the arena to face the droid that was rising from the ground. She took a deep breath and drew her lightsaber, igniting it and pointing it down and forward, in the typical makashi stance.
Master Laro could tell that it truly troubled the girl that she had to live with such limitations as she did. The master furrowed her eyebrows under her headdress and endeavored to focus on the now. She had her reasons for asking Vyntyr to train today.

Vyntyr took a deep breath and stepped forward as the droid followed suit, and she decided to wait for it to strike first. She was waiting for a short moment before the droid finally decided to come at her, and she watched as it traced a sweeping yellow path through the air, coming at her left side. She took a step to the left and turned toward her right, raising her lightsaber to parry the blow as the droid passed by her. At least that's how she hoped it happened. She was usually right in theory and wrong in practice when it came to this sort of thing.

And Vyntyr had messed up. She pushed her saber too far forward, and she closed her eyes to brace for the burning impact of a lightsaber blade. But it didn't come. She felt her lightsaber pass through something, and when she looked at the droid, she had sliced through its wrists. It deactivated its saber and stepped back across the arena, defeated. Vyntyr didn't quite know what to do about it. She just allowed her lightsaber to deactivate and took a deep breath. Well, that went well.
"Very good, Vyntyr. That was an excellent counterattack."
Vyntyr didn't have the heart to tell her master that it was a total accident. She walked back to the droid console and programmed the droid for the next bout.

Vyntyr decided that she would be the aggressor this time around, and charged her body with the Force, preparing to sprint forward and attack her opponent. As soon as the droid had stepped to the center of the ring, Vyntyr charged, raising her lightsaber for a long, reaching lunge, trying to catch the droid off-guard. She tried to block out the fact that her master was watching, and focus on the fight, but that was proving difficult, so Vyntyr decided to throw herself into the combat and make sure that she didn't have too much time to think about how much she could potentially embarrass herself.

Okay, so she hadn't hit it. But she hadn't been hit, either, so she was already ahead of where she'd figured she'd be at the beginning of all of this. She had been parried to the droid's right-hand side, and she had taken a step past it. She turned to her right and aimed a low horizontal strike at the droid's right leg, hoping to take that out of the fight. She was rather enjoying this, actually. It was a change of pace from her normal, scientific approach to training. She was able to let her body move now how it pleased, instead of constantly restraining herself in the vain hope of not causing any further pain.

And apparently her body knew damn well what to do. Vyntyr struck the droid in the leg and, though she did not cripple it, she definitely wounded it, as it switched to limping heavily on the injured leg. Vyntyr attempted to follow up her low horizontal slash with a twisting, upward thrust at the droid's face. The droid, attempting to parry the attack, began raising its own lightsaber to try and deflect Vyntyr's blade enough to save face (ha) but Vyntyr felt pretty good about the attack. It was fluid enough that it even looked attractive, and Vyntyr was fairly certain that she was going to win this fight.

Vyntyr didn't make contact, but as the droid leaned back to dodge the incoming stab, it swept its lightsaber forward, and Vyntyr was forced to draw her saber back and shift the hilt down in order to catch the attack on her blade, nearer to her hand than to the tip of the blade. Okay. Whew. She'd managed to not get hit, but she definitely didn't score any points on this particular exchange. So what now? The two were in a pretty tight saber lock, and Vyntyr tried to formulate her next move out of this bind. She figured it out finally and maneuvered her blade up and over the opponent's saber, stepping to the left and trying to slide off of its blade and into contact with its shoulder.

Vyntyr slides off of the droid's saber, but doesn't manage to connect, instead moving around and past the droid's shoulder. She turns toward the droid and swings her saber back toward the right to try and cut her enemy across his exposed back. That's all makashi was, she realized. A game of chess. Constantly checking, move for move, attacking and reacting a single movement at a time. It made the fight something of an equation, with each move balancing the other, the entire fight an effort to unbalance the equation. She supposed that she could get used to this, but she was still not the happiest about it.

Vyntyr was blocked again as the droid spun around and parried her attack with a solid guard. Damn. She decided she would try and flourish her saber, drawing a circle with the point and trying to sneak up and inside the droid's guard. She was eventually going to make contact. She simply had to have patience. She was smarter than this droid. If she wasn't smarter than the droid, then she at least had the Force on her side. She could do this. She was no longer consciously aware that Master Laro was watching, so engrossed was she by the game that she played with the droid. A true, cerebral challenge, despite the physical nature of the exchange.

The next droid Vyntyr called up was an act of impulse. She wanted ataru so badly that she was willing to be on the losing side of a battle with it. She programmed the droid for a pretty passable ataru match, and took a deep breath as she dreaded the coming battle. But she had to test herself. She was doing much better than she thought she would have been, so she would just keep gradually stepping the droids up until she was either satisfied or defeated. Vyntyr didn't step forward into the arena, instead gathering the Force around her and preparing for something as close to ataru as she could manage.

Vyntyr didn't so much gracefully leap through the air so much as clumsily flail through it. She tried to dive forward and thrust her blade forward, and in that regard she did okay, but she was less an arrow and more a tumbling sort of ball. She had difficulty keeping her blade straight at her opponent and it seemed to prepare for her incoming assault with a cold, calculating eye. Vyntyr had little faith that she was going to hit, but she was already in the air, and the only thing she could do is commit. Vyntyr had to fight the urge to close her eyes in order to keep her eye on the mark she was aiming for, which was the sword-side shoulder of her opponent.

Vyntyr watched as the droid deftly leaped up and over her as she passed harmlessly underneath. It was the utter picture of grace, and she was a clumsy, failing youngling. She tsked herself and spun on her foot, turning to face the droid who was already on the offensive, leaping forward with a front flip, trying to cut Vyntyr from head to toe. Vyntyr tried her best to step just out of the way to her right of its blade and draw a line through the centerline of the droid. She hadn't been taken out of the fight yet, so there was at least that going for her. The girl smiled. She was actually having fun now, where lightsaber practice had always been a chore before. It was nice.
