Ryugi Kazamaru Hmm, well, I suppose that's normal enough. If you don't mind me asking, how do you know Maximos? "I met him a long time ago, Mister Kazamaru. He seemed sad, and I thought that he would be happier if he helped me."
She had no inflection in her voice, despite that sweet, innocent tone. The child had not changed, moved, or shown any true emotion at all since she had begun speaking to him. Even her swinging legs had stopped. She sat still and silent at the edge of the chair, like a doll.

themightyjello "I met him a long time ago, Mister Kazamaru. He seemed sad, and I thought that he would be happier if he helped me." So you did a favor for him eh? Thats nice.Ryugi was beginning to run out of things to talk about. This girl was very strange. And it left him feeling alert, and on guard. She hadn't performed any openly hostile action, but she didn't seem...natural. And Ryugi knew most nature on Gaia.

There was something different about the room... not visually, of course. Nothing had changed at all in the inky black abyss that they both sat in, yet seemed to be able to see each other clearly through. No, something just felt different... almost like it could be tasted, but not seen... almost like...
The smell. The room had slowly filled with an intolerable smell. The dining table had been turned over and all of the food had spilled onto the floor, but somehow it seemed that all of that food was beginning to rot and spoil.
"Mister Ryugi... do you smell that?"
The child leaned forwards in her seat slightly, sniffing the air with her eyes half closed.
"Why... boy... did you know that your hair is on fire?"
She pointed a finger towards Ryugi's collar. Though his head most definitely was not on fire, smoke seemed to be rising from it... smoke coming from the back of his neck, from a particular mark...

It isn't my hair, it's... It's THIS THING!!
Ryugi spun around, and pulled down his scarf, and moved his hair to reveal the smoking area of his skin, which was burning like hell and becoming harder to ignore all the while... This girl, she caused the mark to burn, and cause him pain, he knew it! So, even though she was strange, even though she was not normal in any way, he had no choice but to act on it. She was his ONLY lead thusfar, and as long as she was here, he'd better make the most of it...
Ever since I arrived here it's been itching and burning and causing me a great deal of pain. I don't know WHY that is, but it gets WORSE when you approach, and itches around Maximos. I don't understand it at all!

"Oh dear. Boy, where did you get that mark? It looks like..."
The child stood up on the chair, leaning over so that she could see it clearly.
"It looks like..."
The mark continued smoking, like it was burning flesh though no wounds came from it.
"It looks like... a toucan."

Ryugi had no idea what a toucan was, as he had never seen one, but he KNEW that the mark didn't look like a toucan...
I think it looks like a Reaper holding a scythe... But either way, this little mark has been causing me all sorts of pain since I arrived here...

"What makes you think that? Are you superstitious?"
The child reached out and touched the mark with one finger... and introduced a whole new level of awareness on what pain means. It wasn't just pain in the body, it felt like Ryugi's soul was about to be stripped from his body and forced through a hole the size of... a little mark.
The child took her hand away and sat back down, so sweetly, on the edge of her chair.
"Mister Kazamaru, what a silly person you are. That just looks like a funny-shaped birthmark."

That may be your opinion, but I got this mark after fighting a reaper using a scythe, so I know what one would look like. And in my opinion, it looks like a Reaper holding his scythe.
Ryugi pulled his scarf and collar back up and adjusted it back into a comfortable position.

There was only the future, and the blank slate to draw it on. And there was now, the fight before him. More and more the importance of his fight seemed to grow. This was no mere skirmish over a piece of clothing, this was something more...something bigger. Perhaps something bigger than the both of them, and yet focused on just them.
But for now, the time for philosophy was over. It was time for action.
The rest of this day could not be spent in deep emotional analysis. It was time for action.
It had to be the proper action, an action that screamed his intent in no uncertain terms.
His feet gritted in ths ground, muscles burned and tensed and he sprung into action. Something like a punch, a hard punch straight forward with that right arm, sent express directly to Joshua's face. A punch in which he stepped no, stomped forward, claiming ground as opposed to just defending it. A screaming statement through action.::

"That's not nice, you know."
The child gave him a pouty look.
"Trying to give a little girl nightmares."

Joshua was ready for whatever Maximos was about to throw at him. From the beginning he had been ready... and now they finally had nothing in the way.
Joshua's left side stance stood sideways, with his left arm raised up between the two of them. When Maximos stomped forwards with his attack Joshua tilted his arm in; catching the side of Maxi's forearm and deflecting the punch to his right. Joshua's right forearm rotated up on the outside of Maxi's arm to continue to guide it away. His left foot slid forwards to lean in, and his left elbow snapped out for Maximos' right temple without an instant of hesitation.
There were no wasted movements at all, each action flowed straight into the other. This was the cold precision of a Reaper, and he expected no less from his opponent.

themightyjello "That's not nice, you know."

"Trying to give a little girl nightmares." This girl was not normal, at all. She didn't breathe, she barely showed any emotion, and she was far too intellectual for a child her age. Ryugi was quite sure she knew more than she was letting on, but he wasn't going to press the matter, not when she had the ability to cause him excruciating pain just by getting near him. I'm sorry, that was not my intention.

"What a cruel boy you are to fib like that."
She spoke without showing emotion, despite what the words meant. Ryugi was blathering on about things he didn't understand, because he was afraid of what they might mean. The child quite simply didn't believe there was any truth behind his words because in the larger picture there really wasn't.
Like hearing someone say that things were upside-down in China, what Ryugi believed was really just an inaccurate interpretation of the truth.
"Liar, liar, pants on fire."
One could guess what happened next...

Ryugi's pants, ie, his entire outfit, was essentially flame-proof, and if the little girl was trying to light his pants on fire, there'd be a pretty big problem with that.
I wouldn't lie. I don't know what that mark is. It looks like a Reaper holding a scythe to me, it may not to you. To you, it might look like a ...toucan...? But to me, it looks like something completely different.
I can't lie about my opinion on how this thing looks, because that is all I see when I look at it.
Ryugi didn't know the truth in the matter, all he knew was that a Reaper had placed this mark on him, and that this girl caused pain, while Maximos caused the mark to itch. Hardly anything resembling a full story. Either way, he was being honest about it.

If the girl had been trying to light his pants on fire, Ryugi would be assured that no force in this world or the next, not even the ocean itself, would keep those pants from burning. However, that was not the case... a spark, a small flame began to crawl up the leg of the chair. It left no identifiable marks upon the wood, but it rose larger and stronger with each passing second until it consumed the entire chair and its occupant.
"Oh, dear..."
It was not Ryugi's chair that was burning, though. Now the child sat calmly on the edge of a seat that was aflame but would not burn.
"I suppose I must have been the one lying, then."
The child smiled sweetly, tilting her head to the side as the back of the boy's neck seemed to feel all of the heat that didn't seem to exist otherwise. A fire that seemed to burn nowhere but in his own mind.
