This was absolutely hopeless. Riley put the tiny top hat back on the napkin, cleared a nice spot on the table, and slammed her head into it. She was done.

Charlie took one of the top hats from the glasses and placed it neatly on Rileys head. It was a nice touch and quite fancy.

"Teacher you can just give this team an A for TOTALLY THE BEST EVER!" Charlie's arms shot up in victory. This was his master piece. This was his moment. This was his A. The pink haired demon was sure of it.

Everything was going well until all hell broke loose. Christof tried to run, several people got involved in it, Calder suddenly freaked out at Riley and then everyone jumped on his case...maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all. She slouched further into her chair and rubbed her temples, glad that at least none of this was Her fault. She wasn't causing any trouble, chaos, problems, nothing..she wasn't drawing anyone's attention...this was okay! Sort of. This was supposed to be an etiquette class, and not everyone was acting accordingly. Finally Ms. Winters gave the class her attention and Junko sat up straight again, looking down at the book as it was put in front of her. Simple things? She could do that. Junko liked to think she was relatively well off as it was as far as behavior went, though she realized she wasn't perfect.

Junko's gaze turned down to Calder when Ms. Winters paired them, blinking a bit. Okay...so they just had to set a table? How hard could that be? She got up to wander over to the boil, smiling warmly. So he had a freakout...Junko would pretend nothing happened for his sake! "Soooooo..do you know how to set a table, Calder?" If he didn't then Junko was fine taking on the brunt of the work. How hard could it be? Plate, bowl, chopsticks, spoon..maybe a knife...

"I...I dunno..." What was...where did...oh JACKDAMNIT! Why were there so many things that were meant to go on a table?! She...half of these looked the same to her. And the other half...what was their purpose? Why couldn't you just use the same fork for everything? There were...she counted. What, four forks alone? And...how many Jack damned glasses did one need to drink out of. LW frowned hard at all the things she was supposed to hand to Malodore. This..was going to be interesting.

Alright, alright. She could do this. And she had Malodore to help too. "Uhh...let's just get this out there now. I have no idea what I am doing." The she-wolf gave it an apologetic smile. "Let's...let's start with the big plate. That should probably go in the center." She picked up the dinner plate and handed that to it. "And, next...the smaller plate." LW handed the salad plate over to. "I...think it should, umm...go on top of the big plate?" It kept it out of the way at least, so all the smaller (and in her opinion useless crap) could be set up around that. The next thing her hand closed around was a bowl and an even smaller plate. Really? "What the...this..." She shook her head and gave Malodore the bowl. "How about on top of those two plates?" She asked.

So. Where did they put the last plate...LW just handed that one over with a shrug. "I have no idea where to put that. Just throw it into a corner."

"Umm...should we put all the glasses towards the top? Like up there?" LW pointed towards the top right of their setting so far. "And...order...water glass closest. Wines...really why is it necessary for two wine glasses?" The she-wolf glared at them before handing them off to the plague doctor. "I...don't even know which is which either."

Oh Jack. Now it was all the silverware...and random napkin.

Ok, forks (not 'fork', but 'forks') first. They were all different size. LW held up all four to Malodore. "Is it really necessary to have so many?" Her frown and apparent frustration was probably nothing but cute to see on her. It was difficult for the she-wolf to look menacing or angry. "Umm...how about we drop the forks down and see where they land? That can be where they go?" She liked this logic, but would her partner agree? LW eyed the other utensils and the napkin. Randomly plucking one fork out (which happened to be the dessert fork) LW handed the salad, seafood, and dinner fork over, plus the napkin. "Here, set those on top of this on the left side. Just...make it look pretty?" Now they had...three knives and two spoons left? Holy Candlejack!

Tail swishing behind her thanks to her current dilemma, LW groaned and handed Malodore the last few utensils. "I really have no idea where to set these." Her shoulders seemed to droop in a defeated manner too. She really hoped that her partner wasn't annoyed with her lack of...table etiquette obviously.

"I'm sorry, Malodore. In my family, we just don't even try to have proper table settings. Kind of hard with all of rambunctious kids." She stood next to the plague doctor with folded arms, staring at their setup. It wasn't...half bad, right? RIGHT?

He has been muffing till Ms. Winters addressed them and, to his relief, did not jump on anyone for being loud. Glad he managed to get past that concern, he looked at the floating book that was shown to them, but not given just yet. There was the hanging promise of homework, and he wondering if it would be easy or just miserable work. This class wasn't turning out exactly how he would have thought, and he really didn't like the seating arrangements anymore.

It was good that they were finally paired off, given a task, and he didn't have to sit next to the meanie ghoul anymore. Flicking his tail, he walked over to his and Junko's assigned table, and he looked over what had to be the strangest assortment of utensils, plates, and cups he had ever seen. First off, they were glass. His family didn't own class. They tended to break things too easily at their house – namely him – that they had given up and moved to tin. They even used tin saucers. They didn't even OWN plates because all their meals had some sort of broth or juice in it. Soups, stews, or just very marinated meats. Moisture was key in kelpie cuisine.

So why so much? "We don’t' even use this stuff at my house. Well, maybe the saucer……..why do they need so many cups?" He took one and worried he might drop it, set it back down. "Well, she wouldn't give us all of this if didn't need it….right?" He asked, lifting up the smallest fork he had ever seen. "So…….." he reached over and took a large handful of silverware, not caring if the forks and knives meshed together. "…it just needs to go on the table." Clearly that was the point.

Holly was glad, really really glad about her partner. Mostly because he said he'd handle the suggestions on where to put it all. "Thanks, never really ate a meal before so it would have been all guess work for myself."

She nodded as Ren spoke to her. The ghoul placed the dinner plate exactly where he mentioned then took the next two plates from him. She studied the two of them for a moment. Which was which? Whatever, they looked the same size so she placed one near the dinner plate and one above that.

Holly watched the silverware placed. He really knew what he was doing! "Why are there so many forks though?" And why was there a seafood one?

Next were the glasses. The fox ghost took them as they were handed. She placed the water glass down. Then the other two glasses went down as mentioned. Holly grinned at the wink. "True though some might just put the wine in the wrong glass just to have more too, right?"

Holly took the extra spoon and casually tossed it over her shoulder to land on another's table with a clink. She clapped for Ren as he bowed. "Quite wonderful! I'd have never set it like that first try!" She glanced around the room. "I haven't anything to add. And looking at the other's that are done I think ours looks the nicest."

Malodore watched LW as she placed the china and the glasses, nodding occasionally at her choice of placement... but when it came to the utensils, the plague doctor smoothly stepped in. "Allow me," it murmured, studying them carefully. "And no need to apologize, what you have seems perfectly logical..."

Now, the utensils. Malodore tilted its head to one side as it examined each piece. "I believe the general principle is to place the utensils one uses first furthest away from the plate... let me see..." It arranged the forks in the order of the dishes - first salad, then seafood, then dinner - then did the same with the knives and spoon on the right of the plate. "The direction of the knife blades is also important, I'm told, though I don't quite remember if they face in or out... I'll pick one."

At last, the place setting was complete. "This does seem an excessive amount of dishes," the plague doctor remarked as it studied its handiwork. "People who eat like this must have very sturdy, weight-bearing tables."

"We don't use forks in my family either. We use these," Junko plucked a set of black and gold chopsticks from her obi, having kept them tucked there for now just in case. "And spoons, and knives. Oh, and plates and bowls...I think the cups are for different drinks? I'm not..so sure." Junko looked over to see what they had to choose from. Unholy Jack why was there so much stuff?! Surely this would clutter a table to have so many forks and spoons in one place! She frowned with worry. Maybe this was harder than she initially thought. But it was true, Ms. Winters wouldn't give them things they didn't need, right?

...Unless it was a test.

Yes! That was it! This was a test they needed to figure out! But what was the answer? Was it in the book? Could they use the book? Junko looked around in time to see Riley slam her face into the table, wincing a bit. Boy, she was having a hard time, huh? Poor Riley, her partner wasn't very helpful...or...smart? Eh heh. She was glad Calder was probably more helpful and less inclined to put top hats on everything. "Well, yes...but it needs to go on the table neatly." Junko chuckled, picking up a plate and a bowl. He could get the multiple...utensils.

They didn't even have chopsticks!

Calder was sure that whatever was on the table had to be used in their place setting, and he was going to do just that. Sure, he didn't get why there were duplicates of everything in different sizes, but who was he to say they didn't need it. A lot of people were strange here and if it was one thing Ms. Winters was talking about, it was that everyone was different. They all ate differently too. For once, he never even saw what chopsticks were until Junko showed him, and while he was shoveling everything to his chest to grab as much as he could, he stopped to look at her.

"You eat with sticks?" He said, finding that a little weird. Well, if she liked sticks, he had plenty. He just didn’t see how stabbing something with a stick and eating it off of there was going to work well. Using her hands would have been much easier. Odd.

Grabbing a mound, he looked at her when she addressed the neat aspect. "Um…okay. Want to make the table neat while I bring some things over?" He asked, trying to work what Junko didn't have in her hands on his own. It was a lot of stuff and he certainly was no waiter.
PostPosted: Tue Jan 25, 2011 11:01 pm

Junko didn't find anything odd about her chopsticks, nodding with a little smile. "Mhm! We hold them so we can pick things up with them. It's very easy to do. Perhaps I could teach you?" Of course it was easy to Junko because she was so used to it. She watched warily as Calder collected everything, grabbing a napkin, a spoon and a knife as well. She'd be needing those! But...he...wanted to try to use everything? Hopefully they wouldn't need to clutter the table like that.

Oh! That wasn't a bad suggestion at all! Teamwork, Junko liked that idea. "Sure, I can do that!" She agreed happily, walking away with what she had. Junko then began to neaten up and set the things she had with her. She set them up how she was taught to, folding and placing the napkin on top of the plate and then setting the bowl down on top of the napkin. Her chopsticks were placed horizontally before the display, and she placed the spoon and knife to the right side as well.

There! Perfect! Junko turned proudly to Calder. "All done, Calder! We don't need those things after all!"

He expected that she would start making things into piles, but apparently there was a more specific setting that she had in mind. When he felt they were on the same page, he turned about with EVERYTHING left on the table piled in his arms, and he went over as delicately as he could, and then came to the table. Once there, he dumped everything on the table – with care mind you – but dumped on top nonetheless. He didn't even see her place setting as he hadn't been able to look over all the silverware and plates, not to mention an extra cup.

Once he was done, he pushed what utensils were about to fall and grabbed the cup before it crashed to the ground. Pushing the cup into a free spot, he looked up. "Well that was easy." He said, clearly feeling they were done here.

She was very proud of her work! It was neater than some others, such as poor Riley and her partner's, and to her it was certainly proper. Even if the spoon and fork were probably in the wrong place. She was in a hurry! But then Calder did something awful.

Something cruel...

Something despicable...

Something that brought a look of pure horror and devastation to Junko's face as she watched him dump everything on top of her table setting. "M..my table setting..." He ruined it!

Something was wrong, and confused, Calder started at the girl, then at the table (looked fine still), and then back at his partner. When she started to mutter, he moved his ear in closer to hear and then looked back at the table. "Place setting?" He repeated, and then wondered where this place setting was.

Frowning, he reached into the top pile of dishes and pushed them out towards the edge and looked back at her, hoping he cleared enough off to the side (and dangerously close to the sides mind you) that she could see what she was looking for. "Is...Is that better?" He wasn't sure what she was looking for or had.

The horrified futakuchi-onna watched as her work was revealed, though clearly disheveled. He didn't understand. He didn't know what horrors he'd just inflicted on this poor table. It was so cluttered! So cramped! So...so messy! It was horrible! "Ah...this...this is way too much stuff, Calder. I honestly don't think we need everything...it's too much!" She whined, biting down on her lip. But what if Calder was right? What if they did need to use everything? But what if they didn't?! But then what if...Jackdamnit! This was hard!

Junko reached a shaking hand to gather up all the spoons and put them to the side where the original spoon had been. She was glad he caught the cup before it was broken; that was one less mess to worry about. "Let's get this all cleaned up..." She still sounded somewhat broken, or like she wanted to cry, moving things around while trying to figure out the best order to put everything in.

Some boils and ghouls were raised learning the basics of high society and knew little bits of trivia, such as working your way from the outside of your dishes inwards. These same boils and ghouls may also know to eat with their napkin, and to always say "Please," and "Thank You" when eating.

Merope wasn't raised with manners. He was raised in a clan of giant seamonsters that were well over a hundred feet long that caught and ate whatever they could find after harvesting them for spare parts as per their orders. Not only that, they didn't even use utensils.

The undead sea serpent picked up a dinglehopper fork and looked at it uncertainly, glancing over at Alessa. "Um," he ventured, "I can give it a try first, I guess...?"

He was really, really unsure of himself and couldn't resist looking at the other students' settings. He quite like Charlie's, but would it be obvious if he copied the pink haired boy's work?

Thankfully, at the school's creepatarium he knew some of the basics. The plate went down first in the middle, the napkin off to one side, then the fork, utensils, and... Hey, wouldn't it look better if he did this instead...?

As soon as he placed the last item, he took a step back from the place to admire his handiwork. Then he looked to Alessa. "Think that looks good? Or should some things be moved around...?"
