"Y-you've seen them before?"
The Chuunin lost his composure at her words, blinking rapidly in an attempt to process the information. In Kumogakure it was forbidden to tell him of the last possessor of his bloodline but he remembered dark looks presented to him when he first revealed his eyes.
"I haven't seen many shinobi from the Kumogakure when I arrived, only one. A Hyuuga. A few defected and one became a terrorist, attacking a hospital before he fled....Lady Hokage who had the Rinnegan before me?..What did they do?"
He was more focused on the last question than telling her about Kumogakure's recent failure. He wasn't too well connected with the other ninja, there were very few his age and most of the time he was training in secluded locations. He had been the only representative for the Lightning Village during the Chuunin Exams, afterwards he spent much of the time alone.

The boy spoke the truth in that seeing his abilities, Kage might be able to more effectively assign him to a team. "Go ahead and lead the way and I will follow." turning then to Rei quickly before they left, she answered his question as well... "You don't need to be assigned a mission or request them as a Genin. Things need doing all around the village. if you have trouble finding something to do... you're not looking hard enough. there is a listing of available D-rank missions on the outside of the building. "A loner, eh?... I guess that's too be expected of a Rinnegan user. Any persecution Hyouton might have faced in the past from Kiri would be a fraction of what Rinnegans have had to endure... even from so long ago. The scars in Konoha specifically still run deep, even after all that time." Hoping that she hadn't said to much or revealed anything that the boy shouldn't know, Kage sighed as she dropped her feet to the floor, leaning forward with her elbows on her desk as she propped her head up on top of her hands just looking at him.
"The Rinnegan has had more occurrences recently then in past years... but it still holds a strong stigma. The last one I saw worked for an organization which I care not to mention at this point. Needless to say, he caused a lot of trouble for us and his organization even more trouble. I was assigned to do reconnaissance and I ran into the ninja... and I was lucky to survive. Had he been more advanced in his training, I might not even still be here." Kage's look had become much more serious then usual as she thought hard about what to do. On one hand, having a Rinnegan user in the village would be a great asset. It didn't seem like he had any great loyalty to the Kumogakure, and perhaps he would much rather a stay in Konoha.
It would have to be carefully considered though... the Rinnegan held great power, and as such his training would have to be tempered properly, or less a repeat of what had happened prior could happen again. But, it wasn't like Kage to turn anyone away for any reason. She would do her best not to treat him unlike any other ninja, though she would take a special interest in watching over him, as she would for Hiruma. "Don't worry though, it's not like i hold any of that against you. You are your own person and your decisions will be your own. Tell me Mettai, what is it you want in your Shinobi life?... why have you come to me today?"

Daichi nodded to Kage, and then waved to Rei as a goodbye. "Hai, Kage-sama. Please make sure you have your ninja tools." he said, and led the way down the stairs, out the main door, and towards the waterfall. He ended the link, because he thought it would be rude to always listen to her thoughts without legitimate reason.

Rei nods and walks towards the hole in the wall. Once he reaches it he simply drops from sight. Anyone looking down would see him land the drop with a slight bend of the knee but nothing more. Rei walks to the poster and reads out loud to himself, "Walking a dog, cleaning, hospital work, babysitting... lets go with the dog." Rei gets the address and walks away.

He frowned at the information he received in her first statement. Was he destined to be a loner because of his bloodline? Had a previous possessor of the Rinnegan done something that serious to Konoha? He was worried and it was to be exspected for someone of his age despite the signs of maturity he often displayed.
He had to know more about this shinobi, strong enough to nearly kill Kage without even being fully trained. He glanced at his hands and worried whether he would ever wield such a power and whether anyone should really wield as much power as Kage alluded to. It sounded as if this man had done Konoha great harm in the past.
Mattei gulped at her question and looked back up at her. "I-im not so sure anymore. Once the excitement of becoming a Genin faded away all I wanted to do was please my family. It's not to much motivation but I've never found something worth...fighting for," he said, clenching his fists together. He often heard of ninja, overcome by emotion, performing unrealistic feats in order to protect their village or a loved one. All Mattei felt connected to was his family, hoping he could shelter his clan from the troubles of the ninja world despite his age.

Rei walks down the street and up to the mission board, "Hmmm, I suppose cleaning would be least bothersome." Rei turns and heads to the hot springs.

Kage Konoha | Hyouton | Sannin (Temporary Kage)Kage smiled reassuringly at Mattei's confusion, intent on helping to give him some direction if she could. His predicament was not uncommon, but his circumstances, namely in being able to wield so much power were. As such, the weight of her words and actions carried much more reality behind them then normal. "Where you are is not uncommon Mattei. Many shinobi forget why or for what reason they decided to become a ninja. I can say however that before you go any further, you need to know what it is you are going to do with your abilities before you can grow in them. Because I can guarantee you that no ninja has ever reached their full potential without having a goal which makes them strive to achieve it."
"And if you don't know where you're going... you might not ever get there." Kage left her last statement linger in the air and waited patiently for his response. She didn't know if she had helped the young Chuunin at all, but she had at the very least been able to give him a small bit of council from what she had experienced in her own life. And hopefully, that would be enough to inspire his own thoughts.

Mattei was silent for a long time, his puzzled grey hues fixated on the floor while his mind worked furiously to solve the puzzle set before him. What did he find enjoyable in the doomed life of a shinobi? What fascinated him enough to wake him up in the morning and leave him empty at the end of the day?
Chakra!
The biological energy was his only hobby, the only thing that he focused all his energy into studying. When he trained he didn't nessecarily train to get stronger. No, instead he trained to understand chakra and it's many mysteries. His expression didn't brighten at this revelation but only deepened as he focused on that single aspect of his life. Chakra was a central force in the life of a ninja but how many shinobi truly understood its complexities and secrets? How many spent every waking moment of their life trying to unlock its power without taking shortcuts down that twisting and enigmatic road? Mattei couldn't answer that question but he realized that he really did know why he became a ninja.
Ever since he awakened his Rinnegan and seen the vibrant colors of chakra he had been intrigued. He didn't just see chakra but he could sense it through his other senses, a trait he always kept to himself. He could taste the frosty chakra infused into the wall of ice behind him and hear the haunting melodies of Kage's chakra resonating throughout the room. He inhaled and closed his eyes, his stance loosening.
"I want to master it-Chakra. I want to understand it, but more than that I want to protect it from misuse and perversion,"
His eyes snapped open and he lifted his chin, still rounded by the grasp of pre-adolescence, to look the Hokage straight in the eye. "I want to become stronger than the other shinobi, a lord of chakra,"
Was this the infamous ambition hiding behind a veil of innocence such as that found in the previous possesors of the Rinnegan? Or would Mattei be among the first to break the cycle and use his power for good?

Kage Konoha | Hyouton | Sannin (Temporary Kage)Kage was glad to hear that he now had an ambition and that she had had some small part in him realizing it, but the weight of such a thing quickly crushed her. On the one hand, Mattei had mentioned that he wished to master Chakra and protect it form misuse and perversion... but on the other, he wanted to exceed the skills of all others and name himself 'The Lord of Chakra'... "Such a goal is quite admirable Mattei and I would gladly offer my assistance in what ways I can, but I will warn you of something else..."
"The two goals seem strangely at odds with each other, yet strangely related as well. To protect against the misuse of chakra or ninjutsu is all well and good, but you must make sure that in the process, you, in achieving your goals do not make sacrifices which might change you into that which you wish to fight against. There is no doubt that you have great potential, and that you can obtain great ability... but what is important is the proper use of that power. Without that control, you risk becoming that which you hate." Kage gave the words a few moments to rest, allowing the young ninja the chance to absorb and contemplate what she said prior to continuing once more...
"We can train you as far as we can in jutsu here in Konoha... and help you achieve your goal of knowledge... but in our definition, what it means to become 'stronger' may differ. Do you understand what I mean?" To some, becoming 'stronger' would mean gaining physical strength, or being able to defeat your enemies... but to others it might be entirely different. Devotion to one''s village showed strength of heart, devotion to an idea showed strength of will, and in Kage's mind, strength was a matter of using your skills in the appropriate way at the appropriate time for a cause you know to be right. How Mattei would take it however, she was unsure.

Mattei frowned, somewhat puzzled by the Hokages words. "But the ends should justify the means. If I become the strongest ninja everyone would respect me and be too afraid to mis-use chakra! Wouldn't everyone be better off that way!"
His brows came toogether in a sharp 'V' and the Chuunin clenched his fingers. He thought she would understand his choice and commend him for his thinking? With the Rinnegan he could make the world a better place, where chakra wouldn't be abused in dangerous fashions. Blinking suddendly he spoke again.
"But what if they devote themselves to something wrong, that would make their strength some fake and impure?! How can you trust somebodies strength of hear or will when you know it's wrong?!"
At such a young age for a shinobi Mattei's intelligence often clashed with inner naivety, often bringing about extreme confusion and painful headaches. The curse of youth often restricted Mattei, physically and mentally but at the moment he felt like his words were true.

Kage Konoha | Hyouton | Sannin (Temporary Kage)Noting the tension in his face and the tightening of his grip, Kage began to feel slightly nervous as to the path Mattei's mind seemed to be traveling. So much of youth was fragile, and so much of the ninja world, and the world in general didn't make any sense. To try to make someone see what little sense the world can make is a delicate and dangerous situation... one which Kage now feared she was failing at. As she listened to him however, instead of showing any signs of worry or disappointment, she tried to look at him with caring emotion as she answered his questions the best that she could with what she knew...
"Power is a dangerous thing Mattei. Sure, it can get you what you want, but there is always a price. Fear is not the way to motivate people... it takes a real change of heart to ever bring about any good in this world. Let's say you fulfilled your dream by being the most powerful ninja in the world, by mastering chakra altogether, and made everyone act peacefully out of fear of being killed otherwise. What would then happen if you were to suddenly become ill, and unfortunately pass? Where would the peace be? Gone. Lost forever in the chaos that would ensue."
"Change people's hearts and motivations however... and even when you are gone, your memory carries on to bring peace for years and years to come. It has been this way in Konoha for generations... and never once has the village ever completely fallen. we have fought through wars, tyrants, and destruction, but we have always survived due to the founding principles of our forefathers and their ideals of how to make a great nation." Hoping that her words were reaching him on at least some level, Kage continued on and tried to uplift him so he didn't feel cast aside...
"Your goal is very admirable, and your desire for peace is what we all strive for, but we must be careful never to elevate ourselves too high, lest we begin to see those still on the ground as insects." Kage hoped that she was conveying herself well... it was so important that she accurately describe the will of Konoha to this young shinobi... even if he did not stay in the village, hopefully the words would carry with him. "As for being able to read someone else's heart and know if they are wrong... I suppose no one can say. But, discernment reveals a person's true intentions, and can reveal people's true motives. I guess it's something that simply must be learned on your own. It all comes down to how someone even defines what is deemed as 'wrong' as well."

"Well you-," he bit his lower lip and his eyes roamed around the room while the Hokage spoke. Her words struck a chord with him and he glimpsed truth in her words, a rational truth that was obscured by his passionate and emotional argument. His cheeks flushed as his own stupidity and his head hung in shame and dissappointment.
Of course she was right, she was a Hokage and an experienced shinobi. He didn't understand why he had even thought to oppose and he mentally cursed his foolishness and over-ambition. He was silent as she spoke, sheepishly eyeing the ground. He wondered what she thought of his words and was wary he would take the same path as one of the previous users of the Rinnegan. Ashamed he had betrayed her trust with his earlier words he stammered a reply.
"S-sory Lady Hokage, I don't know what I was thinking...I thought I would be able to change the world alone but...but I guess I would need real motivation for something like that, wouldn't I? Hunger for knowledge is nothing but a hobby and one that could lead me off the right course,"
"I don't think I can answer it-your question. I can't recognize what motivates me...It's an alien feeling but a know, deep down, that I should be striving to accomplish something. It may sound stupid but I just have a gut-feeling that being a ninja is the right thing to do...Mabye in the future I could fine motivation but for now...For now I don't know enough to honestly answer your question,"
He wasn't happy with his words. He always felt like he should have a tangible reason to live as a reason but he always understood that he was pre-destined for shinobi life. He suspected it had to do with his Rinnegan, he doubted that they had much to use to any non-ninja considering the benefits they granted to the owner.

Just because you don't know your purpose now, doesn't mean you won't learn it in trying to find what that purpose is. But don't think that because you can't change the world on your own, that it does not mean you cannot change the world. You of all people, with your extraordinary eyes, should be able to see the force you could be for the world. I would still encourage you to become a master of chakra and to pursue it just as you had planned before. It's important to have goals, and if you want to strive to be a great ninja, it is an admirable goal. You will learn in time, as we all have however, what being a great ninja means to you."
Kage had hoped that her earlier words had not depressed the young boy from wanting to continue in his training. To discourage him from doing so would be an incredible shame considering his great gift of the Rinnegan. If anyone was to become a master of chakra, Kage believed that he would be equipped to do so... but it would be a long journey. "Just keep following your gut like you said... and the answers will all come in time. And in the meantime, Konoha and myself will be here for you should you have need of us."
