Lin eyed it for a moment before giving Senka to Earendil, trusting the cat not to be troublesome before taking the spear. It brought her back to her childhood when she always carried around a pointy stick. Good for trying to catch fish bigger than you and beating senseless ninjas.

"You're going to have to explain this to me," Lin murmured, "I haven't done this before."

Leyenda smiled and stepped back a bit. "Come right up to the bow," she invited Lin, "it's easier if you don't have to lean over too far to see the fish. Hold it like this ..." She positioned Lin's hand on the spear so that she could throw it like a javelin. "Right in the middle. How does it weigh in your hand? Feel good?"

It was a bit more nerve wracking to try to come up to the bow when one had a sharp object in hand. She carefully stood over the bow and weighed the spear in her hand for a moment.

"It feels fine," she replied.

As Lin moved to the front, Earendil shifted towards the center of the bench so that the boat would sit a bit more evenly in the water. He made sure not to startle Senka too much, and once he had settled again he began to pet her softly.

Leyenda helped Lin towards the very front of the bow. "Put one foot here," she pointed, "and brace the other against the hull ... that way, whether you're throwing or waiting or pulling the line back in, you're braced and you won't fall or rock the boat too much."

Senka had to admit (though she would hate ever admitting aloud) that Earendil had good petting hands. Of course she would never let him know that, unfortunately purring was a knee jerk reaction.

Lin meanwhile was trying to get herself into position, to her it felt kind of awkward, but she chalked it up to not being used to this at all. Bracing herself against the hull she nodded once she felt comfortable enough.

"Okay, I think I have it."

Leyenda smiled and stepped back, and sat down on the bench next to Earendil. "Then just aim, and throw," she grinned. "Just remember - when the spear hits the water, it may change its angle a bit. You'll have to adjust for that when you aim."

Earendil had never pet a cat before, nor heard one purr, but it was a wonderful sensation, and he smiled warmly and kept petting Senka.

"Hmm..." Lin looked thoughtful as she looked back to the water.

Of course she had never thrown before so she wasn't so sure how much the angle was supposed to change. She wouldn't know until she tried though, so try Lin did. Aiming and throwing the spear in the best angle possible at least if it hadn't been in the water. It was only when she hit and missed the fish could she see how much the angle changed.

"Huh.... is it because of the way things look under water?" she asked as she got the spear back.

"Um ... in part?" Leyenda replied. "But more ... because when the spear hits the water, unless it's going perfectly straight down, the resistance of the water will push it out of the way a little ... like ..."

She held up her hand to show her. "If you throw at an angle, like this," she murmured, one finger representing the spear going at about a 45 degree angle, "and it hits the water, which is flat," she held her other hand up to show the water, then had the 'spear' hit it, "it will keep going forward, but because of the impact the angle is a little less." And her finger turned and was now entering the 'water' at about 35 degrees. "Does that make sense?"

Now that Lin thought about it, it did make sense and she nodded as so. She wondered why it didn't occur to her that water as quite more solid so of course it would affect the impact of the spear. With that new information in mind Lin turned her attention back to thewaters. She could see the shadows of the fish darting from what place to another. Taking aim once more Lin threw the spear this time more aware of angle change once it hit the water.

She was pretty sure she at least clipped one, though it was probably by accident. Spear fishing Lin decided as she pulled it up again was much harder than say... hunting wild life on land.

"This might be a while..."

Leyenda giggled. "Well, if we're going to have dinner, maybe I should just keep doing the fishing," she grinned. "If you want, I can take you out another time to practice."

She stood up just in case Lin wanted to trade places back.

Lin decided that it would be best for Leyenda to take back the spear. There were a lot of them and if they were going to have dinner, and Leyenda had promised Senka her own small fish if she behaved.

"Here, I'd like that in the future."

Leyenda took the spear back and smiled at Lin. "How long will you be staying?" she asked, moving back to the bow of the boat.

She braced herself and looked back into the water, watching the fish.

Lin glanced at Earendil and thought about it, "I'm not sure... a few days at least?"

At least she was pretty sure it would be at least a couple of days, since they did stay a while at the vineyard. She looked to Earendil for confirmation. All the while also noted in amusement that Senka liked Earendil petting her and was rubbing her cheek against his arm.

The sucker.

Earendil caught Lin's look, and he smiled at her. "I'm sure we could stay a week here," he told her. "After all, it's so much bigger than the plantation, so much more to do ..."

He was enjoying himself, spoiling Senka. It was the first time he'd held her, and he was glad that she seemed to like him.

"Then we can go out again a different day," Leyenda grinned, her eyes still on the water. "And if you like I can show you the regular kind of fishing, it's easier, but it does take longer."

Lin grinned up brightly at Earendil she would love that simply because there was so much to see, their market place even seemed really interesting, even though she had been in all sorts of shops before, but here was different.

"I would like that," Lin replied, "I generally until now never fished before."

Naida had she knew, but her method of fishing was unique only to her kind. They really caught their fish.
