Nikolai sighed. It was a rather conspicuous form for midwinter. "Because it's my pet, and I invited them here for a few nights. With the weather as bad as it is I saw no harm in putting a few extra bodies together. Helps everyone stay warm, as it were."

“Who in the world has a pet puma?” Jacqueline said in exasperation. She didn’t want to intimidate them or be on rough grounds with them, but she was finding it difficult dancing around the subject. It would probably be best to get to the point.
“I know what you all are,” Jacqueline said. “And I know this because I’m one of you too.”

"Are you really?", Emily said. Emily didn't trust her at all. She felt that the girl was lying on multiple levels. "How do we know? But the question that should be asked is, How will we know?". Emily then pulled out her throwing knife and grabbed a couple of carrots, where she cut them up and threw them into her broth. "I don't mind saying 'I don't trust you', but please, be truthful. T'would be a shame that I'd have to kill you", she said truthfully.

kian finally got tired of the emily cat's hostility. she looked over at her with unveiled contempt, and half hidden behind it, a kind of unending sorrow. "listen kitty, i dont care if you want to pull the violence s**t, but if you are, do it away from the table, and preferably outside. look, jackie here is obviously uncomfortable, probably doesn't know a clear reason herself for being here, and quite frankly i'm tired of your attitude. cool it or leave." she turned to jackie. "and as for you, i know without a fraction of a doubt you half of some sort of reptile. i'm not sure which, but i know its a reptile. its a falcon thing. in fat i can tell what each and everyone of these people are. all three cats, though different kinds. obviously nik is a puma, and i've got katie figured as a plain cat, though one i wouldn't want gunning for me, and emily is a fierce one, whatever she is. you on the other hand...' she paused for a moment taking a deep breath and watching closely, ' you are a lizard, though i can't put my finger on what kind."

"You know, you're right. I've been on edge all night, and I really have no reason to snap and snarl at everyone. Guess I'm a little paranoid from being chased from halfway across the world.", Emily conceded. "Your name is Jacqueline, correct? I truly am sorry, but I am serious about not trusting you. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for now. Perhaps after I cool down a bit we can talk". Emily then stood up and took her dishes to the sink. She then went to sit in front of the fireplace. She was glad that Kiana didn't know what breed she was. Heck she wished she didn't have to worry about her breed. She wished that she could be home with her mother and father. Emily adjusted her arm so it would be a bit more comfortable in her sling.

kiana nodded getly to emily as she left the table, then took her own things to the sink then went and curled up in one corner of the room with her wings folded around her like a blanket.

Nikolai let the nickname slide for the moment and stretched out on the floor in front of the stove, purring gently as he dozed.

((People aren’t supposed to know Jacqueline’s name yet, but whatever.))
Jacqueline raised her eyebrows in half shock, half amusement at the falcon girl’s outburst. Well that was one way to get straight to the point.
“I’m part basilisk lizard,” Jacqueline said to Kiana. “And because I can taste the air, I already know what kind of animal traits you all have.”
She pushed her chair back and stood up to take her bowl to the sink.
“And don’t worry about not trusting me- I hardly ever trust anyone at all,” Jacqueline said as she grabbed her bowl and walk to the sink. I can only trust my superior officers, she added silently in her mind.

Katie didn't say anything at all, instead she sat there sipping her broth slowly, looking rather amused... After Jacqueline spoke she said, "We may not all be halfbreeds of the same species, but we are all not exactly human.. I'd say that's enough in common to call all halfbreeds kin.. We may not have had the same experiences.. But for the majority it's been pretty similar... being hunted down by others due to what we are.. How we were created--though we are not much different than a human test tube baby--the only difference is that one of our parents is of a different species..." She paused for a moment and then said, "If we stick together as kin, we may have a better chance at surviving... We may not trust each other but I believe we all have the same goal---survival..."

Mrs. Cake tapped Katie on the shoulder. "'Scuse me, miss, but a bit o' a correction, if Oi may. Me daughter Ludmilla's a werewolf, completely nat'rally, tho' her da never once howled at the moon."

"That's because that is a medical condition. In the scientific world it's called hypertrichosis. It's a genetic condition though science has yet to identify what part of the gene is affected." Katie paused for a moment and then explained how she knew this, "My mother was a geneticist."

Mrs. Cake shrugged as a large dog padded in. Nikolai raised his head and glared at the dog, hissing in the back of his throat. Mrs. Cake nodded towards the dog, who turned to look at Katie with a disturbingly intelligent glint in its eye. "Try tellin' her that y'self, dearie."

kiana whispered softly from behind her wings. 'its not only about survival either. its about being able to live, without having to look over our shoulders every second of the day, about being able to live our lives by our own rules not by making sure there isn't anyone at our backs, without feeling a between your shoulderblades everywhere you go. its about living not just for the sake of living, but living for something.'

((Gaaah I wish there were more government rpers or something- because there will probably be a lack of action))
Jacqueline nodded at the cat-girl’s statement. It was true, if Jacqueline had not been raised by the government, her life would have probably been a lot more difficult, and she wouldn’t be the trained assassin she was now.
Which was a bad thing- right?
She licked her lips with her forked tongue, absentmindedly tasting the air around her and the many other half-breeds in the room- including a dog with something human about it in the room. Jacqueline had never lived a life of fear; of being hunted like these people had- if anything, she was the hunter.
…and that was the way she’d have to make it stay.

'honestly,' kiana continued, ' i have been fortunate compared to all of you. being a bird, i've been able to high, har to reach places, and they haven't had much luck with any birds other than me. i'm a unique sort. they dont want to use birds of prey anymore, and they cant keep the eggs alive long enough with owls.'
