Arch the Angel ArynChris "Ours are both pagan gods' names," the woman replied sourly, giving up her dance to sit cross-legged on the floor. "All Thor ever succeeded in was breaking things and getting drunk, and Brighid? Hell, I don't even know who she was. Can't find a d*mn record of her more than 'Irish goddess who got turned into a patron saint when the Romans came.' And, of course, I suppose that means they wanted us both to be white? And me with flaming red hair, I betcha. 'Heard that's still a crummy color, where you're from," she added with a wink. ((man ******** that s**t Pat ain't no Pagan god name, nor Pagan god bullshit.)) ((She's talking about Thor and Brighid.)) Svarlena chuckled and shook her head, "Nah, red is a good color in Eccacian-lore, so long as it's vivid. My sister's hair was always smiled on. Not quite as well as my gold, but it was still a good color."

((Oh course not... Patrick is the English version of Patricius--or whatever St. Paddy's real name was--and Padreg is a name closely associated with Patrick and often considered a version of the same name, though I do believe it's one in its own right...
In any case, I was talking about the names Thor and Brighid. wink ))

She stretched. "So, anyway," she said with a yawn, "apparently I'm here to keep you company or entertain you or something until 'the appropriate time,' whatever that is. Beats me if we're breaking you out or leaving you here, or if somebody wants something from you, but that's the deal. And I'm bored. Wanna blow this joint?
"Otherwise, I got blackjack."

Das Steube Johachim made a small noise of irritation into the mic. "We have already discussed that, Mister Shanra. I need the assistance of you, your Haze, and your brain." Eric turned off the shower, diving for his phone, and barely avoiding braining himself on the vainity. "This is Eric." Pen turned away from the hologram and turned her attentions to the phone. "Hey, Eric." She said in a clear voice. "Apparently I'm alive, yeah, I know you're not going to believe me, but if you want to come down to [enter military building name here] you can see if yourself."

"You know the game?"

I'll teach as we go." She dealt out two cards, the first face-down and the second face-up, to both of them, then hesitated.
She gave Svarlena a quick glance. "I usually play it bent, not straight. Habit. Straight is what most people play, and you can pick up any other version if you learn straight first, but I can teach you bent easier. Your pick."

Think along those lines, I can explain the full story later, if you'd like. I'll be heading out to Jishara with Jarred soon, though. I thought it'd be a good idea to let you know a bit of what was going on." She paused, leaning against the wall. "Thank you, for everything, Eric."

"Right. So, three more cards, middle of the table." She laid three cards on the floor between them, the middle card faceup and the end two facedown. "Basic version doesn't have this. Normally, you look at your own facedown card, the one right by you, and figure out the points. Ace--that's the one with just one giant symbol in the middle--can be 1 point or 11 points, your choice, and all face cards--those are the ones with drawing of people--are all worth ten points, gamewide. You leave that card facedown, so only you know what points are there. The faceup card, everyone sees, and you figure out the points for that one, too. Same deal. Add those points up, and keep the number in your head. You can check back at the facedown card any time you want if you forget the number, but every time you do that is another chance for my to cheat and try to see your card. You don't want that.
"Your first goal is to get to 21. Numberwise, I mean... The dealer will deal you another card each time you ask for a "hit," and you have to add the points from the new card to the ones you already have. The goal is to get to 21 without going over. The dealer--in this case me--is going to try and do the same thing. The only thing you have to do for this part is beat the dealer. All players are competing with the dealer, not each other. If the dealer goes over 21, everyone else wins. If the dealer has 21 or less and you have less than the dealer, you lose. If the dealer has 21 and you have 21, you win. If the dealer has less than 21 and you beat him, you win. If you shoot the moon--that's a total of five cards in front of you without going over 21--you win no matter what your number is. Don't try to shoot the moon if you can just get a really good number instead, because shooting the moon is rare.
"The second part of the game is where you face the other players. You'd see that better if we had another person or two, but this'll do. In the second part, it's a series of bets. You're gambling 50-50 on which card on the end, when you add it to the card in the middle, will put it closer to 21. You can bet one card over the other, that both cards are the same number and therefore equal, or that your own facedown card will give it a higher--not lower, but higher--score than either of the two on the table. In tournaments, only the winners of the first part get to the second part, and they get dealt a new card for it that they don't get to look at first. In this, we do both parts, then check who won each after all the bids are set for part two."
The woman sat up straight, re-shuffling the rest of the deck. "You follow all that?"
