I can easily obtain ranged swords.

Either Magical or throwing.

But aren't they used more for horizontal range rather than vertical range? And there aren't any 'throwing' swords...

They still work!

It just looks that way for a horizontal screen!

Oh, they exist.

They are just not normally used for combat.

Yep. I was getting really frustrated with it at one point, and I've been playing it a little too slowly for my tastes (I keep getting distracted by Intarwebs...) but I like it. :3 I don't know if I'd want to replay it, though.
