It shows that they like to act like they know what they are talking about, but haven't picked up the book.

I agree with those. Especially number one. I hate the people who love Erik only because, 'he's' hot with his mask on! They're totally missing the point of him! xp What also bugs me is when people say that ALW version of Phantom of the Opera is an actual Operetta. It's not! It's a 'musical'! I dislike it when people say Leroux's version was terrible. You wouldn't have ALW's version without him!

Correction: It was a musical trying to be an operetta and failing miserably.

Thorn Venatrix Correction: It was a musical trying to be an operetta and failing miserably. Oh, so is it supposed to be an Operetta? I've always considered it a musical.

Yes. Hence the style of singing and the way they had everyone sing every. Single. Line.
That got on my nerves a bit.

Thorn Venatrix Correction: It was a musical trying to be an operetta and failing miserably. It's nowhere close to an operetta. Operettas are light-hearted, funny musical things that often include dancing.

Elanchana Thorn Venatrix Correction: It was a musical trying to be an operetta and failing miserably. It's nowhere close to an operetta. Operettas are light-hearted, funny musical things that often include dancing. Hah, Elanchana beat Fox! XD Bring out the cider, we have a winner. And she's right. Operettas are classified as humorous Operas that will sometimes have a line or two spoken. PotO would be nowhere near an Operetta. It's not even a "rock opera".

Hence the reason I stated the words "trying" and "failing miserably". I never said that it was actually an operetta. Quite the opposite. Which is how it "fails miserably".

Well if it was trying, wouldn't it have lame jokes and lame attempts at humor? O.o I've got a Jar of Dirt! And guess what's in it!

There was the dwarf guy.
I was referring more to how every single line is sung (euh, ignore the slight exaggeration) and how it seems really forced.
The stage show is worse. The whole singing on the "Come, we must return..." line always makes me cringe terribly.

The midget was part of the Operetta they were performing. O.o Plus, midgets are kewl.
And I think Webber tried to make it more like a modern opera than a musical, hence a good deal of the lines being sung.

And actually, the credit would go to...what's that name?...*gets book*...Judy Tatchell (sp?) of Usborne's Understanding Music. Described operetta and musicals very thoroughly and used Phantom as an example of a musical. Speaking of, we're going to see an operetta this weekend called The Mikado. Completely off-topic, I know...
