Dark? Xyn took a moment to look at his clothes. Of course he was dark, it was the best way to absorb heat in this kind of weather. Although the truth was that it was simply his preferred color. He wanted it to match Munin's feathers. He did occasionally wear other colors, but what did that have to do with the conversation?

... troublesome.

Xyn was growing tired of this girl. She asked so many questions without contributing anything in return. Normally he wouldn't humor such behavior, but he didn't feel like challenging another person's behavior.

"They are prices and benefits. That is the way they stay balanced... how can people not understand the basic precepts. If someone took too freely of sunlight, that would cause a burn..." Xyn took in a breath to begin a lecture, but realized the girl had already left. A few small grunt-like noises escaped his throat as he let the air out in short intervals, then turned his attention back to Maya.

"And they aren't... riddles... they are simple... truths and... anologies." Xyn struggled to get free, not realizing the girl had such strength. Why were girls so much stronger than him? What was with the people in this village? At any rate, he needed to escape.

Karite watched as the girl who had won his heart ran off into the morning sun towards the village without so much as a second look in his direction. A little confused Karite tilted his head to the side and blinked a few times to make sure what just happened was real. Shrugging his shoulders he put his hands in his pockets and smiled at Maya. "Thanks again for the fight Maya-Sama. It means a lot to me. Where I came from fighting was a way to build friendships. Thank you for being my friend." With that said Karite looked at Kore and smiled. "Come on buddy lets see what old Ero-Sensei has in store for us today." Walking towards the village Karite tried his best to rotate his shoulder while not moving his hand from his pocket. Maya could sure do a number on a guy when she got in the mood.

Kore was shocked at how well everyone was behaving with each other. It seemed like today was going to be a good day. Something that struck him as odd was why Orika-dono was running away with the one-eyed man. At the same time both Karite and Kore seemed to tilt their heads as if to get a better understanding of the situation at large. It was a strange occurrence indeed. Shaking off the though with Karite they both set out on their way to the village to see what all the noise was about. It seemed like today was going to be a god day indeed.

Maya and Baki, of course, were the last to leave the grounds. Maya would leave no one here unattended - who knew what could happen? Watching Karite leave, she decided maybe helping him train wouldn't be such a bad idea...he did have the heart to fight, after all. And even though he got his butt thoroughly whupped... Maya still liked that he was tough about it. The edge of her lips quirked up, and with Baki leading and following the scent, they followed the students to the village center, then further on to the lagoon where Natamo-sensei spent most of her time. She wondered just what was going to be going on... hm...

Maya didn't stop at the center of the grounds; instead, she continued, coming to a stop inside her own tent, shoving Ruha aside with a soft apology and letting herself fall, Baki coming down on top of her. She rolled out from beneath his weight, gasping for breath and fighting tears. Baki...she would never forgive herself this, and would train harder just to make sure she would never be taken advantage of in that same way, not by anyone. She almost regressed into absolute rage when she recalled the female, but ignored it. She was as dumb as everyone else that thought being strong meant fighting alone - which was why she couldn't do it even if she wanted to. Baki was part of her, integral. Yet...Sukotto was strong...Maya's eyes drifted shut and she cuddled against Baki's back, her hands stroking his mane carefully and slowly, being as gentle as she could be. She didn't want to hurt him further after all .....

There was an unusual sound in the air, at least in this part of the village. Though the steady string of footsteps were familiar, something seemed to follow them. The heavy flapping of wings descended from the sky, a black blur along the sky fading into a much larger but equally blurred image approaching the grounds.

"... finished already?" Xyn turned his head to the sudden passenger on his shoulder. The boy carried in his hand a reasonably moderate-sized bundle, wrapped in what appeared to be a black cloth. He couldn't help but scan the area with each stride. The last time he had walked this path he encountered a full troupe. He still didn't understand the circumstances through which those students were forced under Maya's watch, but it didn't seem that important. He'd just have to watch out for Shisei, and Munin would be the card he'd play against that nuisance.

Munin could smell food... what was that scent? It seemed like something he knew, but it simply wasn't strong enough for him to figure out. He looked around for the source, knowing it was close by, but because he was on Xyn's left side and the package was in his left hand, looking down at such an angle might have caused him to fall. With Xyn's pace, his arms never swung that much, so the package stayed steady. He didn't realize Xyn had said anything until after he gave up his search, although it took a slight nudge of the tilt of the boy's head to cause the shift in attention. The raven hadn't quite had breakfast yet, so having food anywhere in his proximity was overwhelmingly distracting. Even so, he didn't have to understand what Xyn was saying to know what he was asking. Munin thought for a moment, his mind still spinning with the thought of eating... shouldn't he get a reward for all his trouble? He didn't mind doing favors, but that Shisei's eyes were like a lightning bolt, standing all his hairs up at the sight of them. He was certain the boy would try to eat him one day.

Maya's eyes opened - someone was on the grounds. Growling, she pet Baki's mane gently and exited the tent, her hands already behind her back...

Oh...Xyn. Maya hesitated, but turned away from him. She'd lost a fight in front of him...she had to train harder, and train Baki twice as hard. They had to fight better together...and they had to fight better separately as well. Maya scowled, a dark look coming over her face. She had to run...she had to do something, or she would go insane. She had to be stronger, faster...Sukotto said his jutsu was based on speed...well, she would train and be faster than him, and stronger! There was no way that stupid pretty boy was going to beat her in taijutsu! She would master his jutsu and then beat him with it, and she would be the strongest taijutsu user on the island again, within their skill level group. A low snarl almost ripped from her lips, but instead she took a step forward. Around the grounds...a circuit she ran often with Baki when they kept guard at night. They started together, ran opposite ways, then met back in the middle on the other side...but Baki was heavily injured, and it was all her fault. Maybe her nightmare hadn't been too off when it had shown her her options in life...except...

Maya stumbled, and fell to her knees. Was that what she wanted..? Power, and no control? An unsatisfied bloodlust..?

Maybe...if it gave her the power...

No! Maya stood easily, ignoring the faded material on the knees of her pants. She growled and shook her head - she wouldn't become her nightmare. She would gain power her way, without having to sacrifice Baki or take his eyes for her own. Maybe she could come up with her own jutsu...hah. Yeah right...maybe. She'd have to study for a whole year before she could handle even writing down the technique on Tategami scrolls...did the Tategami even have scrolls? They had to...Maya ran, the thoughts racing through her mind. Where would they be? Would they be hard to read? Would someone be willing to help her read them and help her train, help her learn them? What about techniques for Baki? That would be awesome, and maybe Baki could be stronger too, with a few tricks up his sleeve...fur...whatever...

"Aw, awak!" Munin snapped his beak at Xyn. The smell of the food was starting to drive him crazy. He thought about simply flying off and ramming into the boy to see if he dropped anything tasty. He decided he would refuse to answer any questions until he had been treated to a proper meal. Gripping his claws a little more tightly ito the boy's shoulder, Munin started to flap his wings. He knew he didn't have the strength to actually drag something Xyn's size, but maybe if he gave him the idea that he wanted to go somewhere, the boy would follow. He'd simply sit Xyn down and search him for food, but first he needed to to find a nice place to sit. His wings hadn't been flapping hard, but pulling on Xyn even a little was far more taxing than the raven figured. He soon let go and landed on a flat, bare surface. It was only now that Munin finally noticed the package bundled in the black cloth.

Xyn grunted at Munin's reply, or lack of reply. What was he going on about now? He asked him a simple question and now...

The boy suddenly felt his shoulder nearly pulled from his socket. Before Xyn had a chance to comprehend anything, he reflexes tried to pull the arm back, which only resulted in Munin letting go and flying just a few feet away. Did he do something wrong? What was that raven upset about? maybe... did Shisei do something to him? He looked over the bird's feathers with a curious squint in his eyes. Everything seemed to be in place, so he hadn't been harmed. There was still something wrong with the creature's attitude, so maybe Shisei said something to him... but in either case, that would mean Munin had been spotted. With another grunt, Xyn turned his head over his right shoulder to check if anyone was approaching. There was still no one around.. not even Maya. If Munin hadn't been followed...

Letting a moment of surrender take over his body, Xyn couldn't help but shrug and walk toward the bird. He obviously needed to get a better understanding of what Munin wanted.

Tap, tap, tap. Munin pecked at the ground. He wanted Xyn to sit. There was no need to force the boy to do anything, the raven knew that Xyn would share the food if given the chance. The smell was getting more and more clear now, not because Xyn was moving closer, but simply because it took a while to register the different types of scents. This smell was something of Xyn's invention. Although not the most appetizing, it was enough to drive the raven mad with hunger. Munin hoped in a number of direction as he looked around. Then he made a single flap of his wings to lift him into the air. He made it over Xyn's shoulder with the hop before flapping his wings again, making a single circle around the boy before returning to his assigned spot, nothing more than to further coax the boy into sitting down. It actually took some effort of self-control not to snatch the food from Xyn's hand, but that conduct would just invite another scolding.

Sit? Xyn stared at the creature as he made a single stride toward him. Well, it probably would be easier to talk if they were both in one comfortable spot, but Xyn's thoughts couldn't help but wander to Maya. He had hoped to find her on the grounds, but locating her would have to wait. He knew Munin's patience wouldn't allow for much more hesitation. He lifted his left arm up with another stride opposite his right leg, then made a slight tilt of his spine as he placed the bundle on the ground. He was used to Munin's antics and little by little he had grown immune to any reflex of the raven flying so close to his head. He ignored the motion only long enough to take one last look around. Baki was hurt so she wouldn't have gone far, and taking an animal to the clinic was unlikely. Even if she was here, what could he do to help a lion? He had thought once about learning medical skills, but he really had no tolerance for it. A quick sigh signaled the folding of his legs while he sat, closing his eyes for a moment to clear his thoughts. He'd need to focus on Munin to figure out what he was trying to say.

"... anything unusual happen with Shisei?" Xyn was still trying to begin the original conversation, thinking that Munin was simply not paying attention. The raven wanted something from him, that was certain, but what did any of this have to do with the favor he asked? He tapped his fingers along his eyepatch, picking at it before finally lifting it from his skin and exposing his left eye. Despite the temperature, every once in a while he felt the need to let his eye 'breath' for a while. Munin also seemed to respond to it better on occasion. Sometimes Xyn wondered if Munin thought that he was a raven as well...

Placing the cloth in front of him, he let the folds of the fabric fall to the sides, the steam immediately escaping into a large cloud, made thicker by the cold air it pushed out of its way while it climbed and dispersed. Xyn purposely placed his head over the small pot of soup, letting his eyes fall into small slits. He didn't care much for the smell, but the steam was comforting on a day like this. Despite the amount of steam dissipating from the pot, the lid was still placed firmly over it. Xyn hoped Maya would come by at some point, so he wanted to keep it warm for as long as possible. Now, what did that raven have to say...?

The time of day was starting to wear on Munin's alertness. He was sure Xyn had said something, but at the moment he figured it didn't matter. The boy was finally taking out the soup, so hopefully they'd eat soon. Oooohh, what was he waiting for?!? Usually the raven would just be waking up by now, so he was thinking more about breakfast than lunch. That boy had probably already eaten before he left the dorm room, so is that why he hadn't started eating yet? Gah, maybe he could just flip the lid off and start eating...

Wait, what did Xyn say? Maybe he wanted him to do something before they ate... NO! Munin wanted to eat first. He decided to just take a few hops closer. Eventually Xyn would lift the top and let him have some, right? He let out a few chirp-like calls, much like any other hungry bird he had heard while in the forest, although his mimic wasn't nearly as harmonic. The noise came out more like an injured puppy than a chirp. If that didn't work, he was seriously going to get angry. He took in a large breath just in case, ready to screech with all his frustration if he didn't get his deserved treat.

A rock.

Maya stumbled, skidding and sliding to a stop...on her butt. She hissed in annoyance, glad that the tall, dry grass kept her hidden from most anyone's view. She had to finish her laps...she had to get faster, get stronger. This was only step one. Step two was laps around the entire island. Step three was swimming around the entire island. Step four was swimming to the mainland... Maya was lost in thought, trying to think of ways to get faster, though she knew it would be useless without the proper strength. Screw reading - she had promised herself she would try to learn properly, but this wasn't the time for that nonsense. Speed, power - and after that, endurance training. Maybe she'd go so far as to learn a useful jutsu...not that there were really any jutsu that were useful, but it might be essential to learn something that physically weaker people seemed to rely on so often. Why couldn't she make up her own? Shuga hadn't let her any Tategami techniques to learn, except a few things scrawled on a scroll along with some images of a half-cat person that drew Maya's interest. Maybe she would ask someone to tell her what it meant. Until then, Maya had to train...because if she wasn't strong enough then it would never be enough.

Even so...Maya flopped backwards, staring up at the sky and feeling herself simply be lost. What was the point? That rude girl at the training grounds...if she and Baki were just beasts to the people around here then what was the point in training to protect them? In training to grow stronger so that she could teach them? Bah...Maya didn't want to teach any of them anyway. She was already stuck with three that didn't even like her. Well at least two - Karite seemed eager to be accepted into her clan. How would she test him? It was obvious that somehow they had passed her quota on their hunt, and it was obvious they used weapons. Where had they gotten them? Not even her tegaki brought down such clean kills, leaving three gaping wounds that almost mimicked Baki's against the carcass...mm...she had claws, and she growled...Maya chuckled. It would be pretty cool if she could morph into Baki and fight at his side that way. Two lions was better than one, even though Maya was slightly stronger than the quadruped.

It wasn't all that bad, the cold...

Both eyes under the shadow of his brow, he let his head tip back to get some idea of the position of the feigning sun. It had only barely shifted from its epoch at mid day. Festivals were so... draining. The days seemed much longer than any normal day. Although Xyn wasn't tired, it still felt as though it had reached the middle of the night by this point. His sight weakening a little from the bright sky, he started to close his eyelids at the same pace as his head swinging back into a forward position. Feeling he needed a slight boost in warmth, his right hand stretched out for the small soup pot. He didn't mind the cold, but that didn't mean he enjoyed it. This was the only point where Xyn had noticed the string of Munin's seemingly odd actions. The raven was fixated on getting something... ugh.

"You want something to eat...? After you're done, you'll tell me what you learned about Shisei?" It was difficult to tell whether Xyn's sentences were statements or questions, but Munin would be used to such a thing after all these years of listening to his tone. Xyn had forgotten the creature hadn't eaten yet, and it was only natural for there to be an exchange of some type of reward for his effort. Not paying attention to any response Munin could give, he continued his reach and lifted the lid, setting it to the side of the cloth, where he then unfolded to reveal a set of small dishes.

"You can eat first." One of the curved plates in hand, he dipped it into the soup, careful not to fill the dish more than half way. It took only a brief tilt of the wrist before he pulled it back up and set it down toward the edge of the cloth. Out in the open, the steam was not as strong, now being difficult to see unless standing over it.

Hmm? Xyn was finally making a move for the pot. The raven coyly looked up at the boy with his usual tilt of his head, making a tiny side step to get a better view of Xyn's lips: 'Eat', 'tell', 'Shisei'. He didn't have anywhere near a partial understanding of the human language, but it was easy enough to figure out Xyn's meaning from the few words the raven could pick out of the sentence. Finally... Munin was ready to simply dive into the pot the second Xyn lifted the lid if the boy wasn't going to offer him lunch. The air that he had collected went out peacefully, the last of it making a smooth "aw" sound, almost like a yawn. Munin twitched his head, moving around in several direction, although not going very far, as he waited to see where Xyn would set the plate down. He was most likely just making himself hungrier with such unnecessary motions, but he had waited patiently... at least by his definition, and was getting anxious. Once Xyn finally let go of the plate, he made a high pitched chirp-like caw before going to it. Naturally, he picked out the few bits of vegetables and other morsels cooked into the broth and ate them first.

His beak was nearly completely submerged in the bowl. Even though the bowl wasn't that big, it didn't take much for the broth to reach up to his nostrils. It was one of the only times you would ever seem the bird's tongue, carefully lapping up the broth as if it were water in the desert. He had lost all sequence of thoughts until he lifted his head a few minutes later. Now... what was he supposed to be doing? He had finally gotten to eat, but he was hoping for something sweeter, even if he did go at it without hesitation... He looked up for a moment to see if Xyn had any kind of desert, but that thought came and went quickly. That boy wasn't the type to keep candy on hand. Such a hopeless human...

Shaking his head vigorously to rid his beak of any remnants of the soup, the raven made a slight hop, bending his wings out only enough for a short glide as he went over the bowl, then finished his previous task by taking a corner of the cloth in his beak and ding his best to wipe it. There was something Xyn wanted, wasn't there? Letting out a call to show his satisfaction and appreciation, Munin went around the bowl, staying on the cloth, and started to strike his beak at the bowl. He bent his legs to get as low to the ground as possible while still being back to move, and after striking the bowl several times, then grabbed it and pulled it toward himself, cawing after each shift in action. He didn't really know how to explain what he determined from Shisei's actions, but maybe if he tried to symbolize "attack" and "learn", Xyn would figure out the rest.

Hmm? Xyn was slightly amused by the change in Munin's attitude. The raven was usually easily made irritable. It was rare to see him in this much of a good mood. Although, the true could be said about himself...

Letting his dark hair fall over his face as his only shield to the sun, he leaned back, keeping his attention on Munin while the creature ate. He usually allowed Munin to get his own food, so maybe this was a sign that he should feed him more often... oh well. Xyn took the second bowl and scooped out his portion of the lunch. Unlike with Munin, Xyn let the entire bowl pour into his mouth, chewing only a few time before swallowing. He was on his third helping when Munin finished and started to move around. He was about to open his mouth to ask if the raven was finished, but it seemed Munin was a few steps ahead of him. Already attempting to mime something, Xyn was taken slightly by surprise by how much Munin actually understood. Low to the ground... obviously snake. So Shisei was... hitting? The soup bowl fully gripped in his right hand, he tapped it on his knee while he thought. Munin was hitting the bowl, then taking it... so Shisei was trying to take a hit?

A jolt went through Xyn's body when the thought came to him. Take an attack? Was that what Shisei was after? To learn Maya's techniques. If Shisei was using Maya to gain strength... that didn't make him as much of a threat as he thought... at least for the time being. Shisei's interest in his connection with Maya... Shisei acted as if he wasn't threatened, but such curiosity was dangerous. To gather information in such an agressive manor... Shisei was definitely not the type of person he could ignore for long, especially if this boy sought Maya's strength.

No sense in wasting any more time, but still...

A sluggish feeling taking over his legs, the leisurely detour he had taken for lunch was making him a little drowsy. Were it a more forgiving condition like the middle of Spring, taking a nap would be more than acceptable. Yet, even on the Tategami grounds, what little snow remained in the area was more than enough to indicate that this was no time or place for sleep. Lifting his knees, he left his legs bent in front of his chest. He wasn't going to take any chances with getting up too quickly, opting to lean his body forward so that his legs simply swung so that he was know kneeling on both knees. The eye patch that had acted as a headband for the time was easily slid back into place, his left have rubbing over the cold fabric to make sure it fit properly in place.

While he moved all the items from the soup back into place, he started to consider what to do about Shisei. Left alone, the boy could prove nothing less than a problem in the future. There was nothing he could really do in the present, however. Shisei was an instigator type. Making any direct actions was very likely what the boy wanted, and a direct confrontation didn't seem to work last time anyway. His course had already been set; he'd protect Maya.

The lid on the soup pot replaced, he had to replace the knot in the cloth that secured the entire bundle. In such a case, he preferred quantity over quality, a rare concept for him. He'd never found a proper use for knots so it was never a skill he had much interest in learning. While he fumbled with that, he looked toward Munin, tilting his head down to try and get the bird's attention.

"We'll both have to get stronger..." Xyn's eyes started to weaken once he said it. Alone, he lacked what he considered enough skill to stay by her side, but the two of them together... a team like Maya and Baki... If Xyn could make use of such a partnership in the same way, maybe he would have a power like Maya's power. Glaring just an inch above the gloomy position of his head, he made a last tug on the knot and lifted the cloth, then followed the motion by looking at Munin. Neither of them were fighters, and he definitely didn't want the raven involved in the types of battles a creature like a lion could handle, but there were other ways the two of them could be useful to themselves and others. He already knew Munin's skills, and the raven could work well with Xyn's skills, so training together might benefit them both.

Munin was almost having fun pecking at the bowl, nearly forgetting that he was trying to give Xyn a message. He wished he could give a simple 'yes' o 'no'. The two of them had already worked out such a system, and it required a great deal less work. Xyn was usually able to pick up on his emotions as well, although not from lack of trying. When Munin was upset, he WANTED others to know. Typically, a stray human would try to please him some way rather than face the wrath of a doom-bearing raven. As all this went through his mind, he didn't notice Xyn reach for the bowl. He managed to stop before making another strike, potentially hitting Xyn's hand, but now the raven was a little confused. Had Xyn figure out the message? That seemed a little two easy. His other attempts seemed to take so much more effort. The only confirmation Munin could gather from what the boy said was "we". The rest of the sentence seemed to trail off and was difficult to figure out. Did Xyn want to go somewhere else? "We" meant the two of them, so there was something Xyn wanted the two of them to do together... well, that didn't matter. If there was something Xyn was going to do, Munin would decide if it was worthwhile later. He wasn't about to agree to something before knowing what it was. He had been tricked into several activities that way.
