"Oh, no... I'm sorry!" Zach's wings twitched again. He looked about ready to have a heart attack. Without looking too closely at his own plate, he picked up his utensils and began to carve a chunk out of the raw steak he'd heaped on it.

"I guess... I shouldn't pry, but if he was the one to break up with you... you don't deserve that from anyone." If there was one thing he could claim experience in, it was failed relationships. Not inter-species, per se, but human and human was close enough.

"Don't worry about it. It was... complicated." Cass peered down at her steaks idly. They were cooling, and she liked them just warm, but she hadn't even really intended to stay in the cafeteria this long.

If she'd known she was going to sit down with someone, she would have grabbed a knife.

"It's nice of you to say so, but I guess these things happen." She smiled faintly; it still hurt to think about. "Not much I can do."

He gathered by the tone of her voice that it was a subject he was better off staying away from entirely. Zach frowned at her, looking rather ragged. "S-sorry. Shouldn't have asked..."

Zach still felt like he was being watched. He gave the room another sweep of his eyes as he lifted his fork away from the plate. His left hand, somewhat unwieldy as it was a good deal thicker and scalier than the right, was clutching at edge of the table. The razor claws had been worn down very little. "So, er, that aside... you've come out of this whole... ordeal... rather well." Yes, state the obvious.

He wound his way back to something Cassidy had said earlier. "Trees, hm?" No sooner had he he started to chew the piece of meat did he notice an odd, metallic taste to it. For the moment his mind was too distracted to dwell on it. Here was the prospect of figuring out the nature of what he'd be in for between now and the two predicted changes that were beyond unavoidable. If everyone became driven by instincts that weren't theirs, he could be prone to it as well. And that would effectively be the end of him. Aubrey and Moreau would doubtless take care of that. "Is it an, um, 'impulse' or something?"
PostPosted: Sun May 21, 2006 5:31 am

"I guess so." Cassidy fidgeted a little. "It's... trees are comfortable, is all. They feel safe. Sometimes I wonder if I should even be encouraging it, if one thing won't lead to another, but so far... it hasn't."

Except that wasn't true. There had been that lizard she had nearly eaten. She had just been looking at it, and had lunged. Missed, fortunately; the lizard had been luckier than whatever it was she had eaten two weeks ago.

"Mostly," she amended. "I guess I mostly like to sit in high places these days. But from what I've heard, I seem to be adapting... better than some."

Cass, with a curious tongue-flick, though she'd never seen anyone look so nervous as Zach did right now. "But how are you adjusting?"

"That's... lucky." The marks where the rope and chain had dug into him still itched and probably wouldn't wouldn't go away for a while. He never made a habit of getting tied up, so he didn't know what to expect of them. The island was proving itself more and more insane with every passing week. He was tempted to get more aspirin, as he'd run out shortly a few days after his second change, but he had little enough faith in the food on the island, never mind the medicine. "As long as you, well, get by okay doing it. It can't be bad for you. Just don't... fall off or anything. Some? Who else is having... problems?"

He shifted a little in his backward-facing chair. "Er, I was mostly fine... until today. Or a couple weeks ago. Afraid I don't even want to wish I'd been turned into something else though, because it wouldn't have happened." He stabbed at a piece of steak while his fork jittered in his grasp. This was what he got for starting to doubt the existence of the cameras - assurance that he would be scrutinized.

Cass shook her head. "There's this guy. Jamal. I haven't actually met him, admittedly, but from what I hear he's tried to attack a few people. Both staff and other islanders. I dunno. Maybe he was always unstable, maybe just always unbalanced. Maybe it is the serum. I don't know. I know that I'm not, as yet, inclined to try eating people. I hope I never am."

She gave a wistful glance to her steaks. The point of ordering a steak blue was to have it warm and bloody, and now it was only bloody. Cassidy told herself firmly that she could hold out a little while longer, no matter how hungry she was.

"What are you turning into? Do you know?" Granted, she was no expert, but lizards generally did not have horns. Mind you, neither did hawks, usually, and Greer was certainly proof of strange thought processes up in the labs. "Some sort of lizard, I'd guess."

"Jamal... ah. Yeah. I heard he attacked Aubrey before once, and uh... well I don't know what to think of him." Any other day but this one, Zach would have happily agreed aloud with some of Jamal's opinions on the staff and how to deal with them, but doing so would likely not have a pleasant end from now on. "Yeah. You're better off. I don't think snakes or birds usually go after people... probably nothing to worry about."

"I'm, er... I'm some kind of combination." There seemed little point in humoring Sabin after the experience in the lab. He had the list of animals somewhat memorized, even though it helped to do little but agonize. "Heh... close. Two lizards... and crocodile, snake, bat, panther, and impala. It's not exactly... recognizable as much of anything, when you put them together. I'd been expecting at least five or six less animals."

Zach noticed her look down at her steaks, and realized by the color they were way undercooked, to the point of being practically raw. He hadn't taken a second bite of his steak yet, but a piece was speared on the end of his utensil. He let his gaze wander back to his own plate, and felt a wave of revulsion at the bloody taste in his mouth. It explained why the meat had been cold - it hadn't been sitting out for a while, it had barely been cooked in the first place. The fork slipped from his fingers. Evidently, today was not planning on being a good day at all.

Cassidy counted off on her fingers. "That's... wow, that's seven animals. You've sure got me beat, I guess." Some snake, too? Well, he didn't look it, and for that she was immensely grateful. "I wish I could understand their logic for some of their decisions." Her tongue flicked irritably. "I don't care what Duvert said. I'm a snake with wings, for chrissakes. That's nuts. So is seven animals..."

As he dropped his fork, she trailed off. "Zach? Is everything all right?"

"I... yeah..." he nodded, looking away from the raw meat and at Cassidy's snakelike face. "I asked about that. He said... they couldn't go back and start over. That's why they, or Dr. Duvert, or whoever, couldn't turn you into a bird instead." He laced his fingers together, pointing his palms toward himself. There was a mixture of disbelief and disgust in his voice. "Duvert thinks he's... helping us."

He looked over at the strange, plated red scales of his left arm, a left arm that shouldn't exist. But it did now. Being thankful for it was downright traitorous. "There is no logic. I'm becoming a dragon. You're becoming... quetzal... whatsitsname. I'm scared to say that's really the most thought they've given to what they're turning us into. If we're supposed to show off some sort of benefit of research, well... they may not know what it is any more than we do."
PostPosted: Sun May 21, 2006 7:49 pm

"He told me something like that." Cass shook her head. "Back when I started sprouting feathers, it was so weird, I just marched--well, not marched. Rolled. I was in a wheelchair, for a while--up to the labs and demanded answers. And Duvert just grinned at me and bubbled over about this Quetzalcoatl thing. He's very... very strange."

Her gaze had drifted irresistably back down to her steak, but now she glanced back up at him in surprise. "A dragon? That's what they're trying to do with all that DNA? That's nuttier than I thought. Dammit, what is this supposed to prove? I suppose, from a theoretical stance, it's all very interesting, but what does turning you into a mythical animal and me into a weird copy of a god hardly anyone's even heard of have to offer the scientific community?" Cassidy let out a small hiss, despite herself. "I think they're crazy. And I'm well aware they're probably listening, and I don't care. I know a bit about mental illness. Psychopaths, the lot of them." She grunted, and punctuated it with the flick of her tongue.

"A... a wheelchair? That's just... I don't know how they can do that to someone..." Zach frowned, his hands still shaking a little. "Huh. Strange being an understatement."

He shrugged. "Nothing. Nothing at all. Emelyn and I talked about this a while ago, but I still don't see any explanation for what they're doing. Probably just having some sick fun with us. I think I was referred to as a 'pet project' or something like that, by Moreau... and Dr. Duvert hasn't really me a reason to think it unlikely. I don't know. It's just weird." Weird, and creepy. "I mean... they threatened to kill me over that thing with Aubrey."

He let his glance flicker at her when she hissed. In a somewhat quieter voice, he agreed with her. "Of course, they're crazy..."

PostPosted: Sun May 21, 2006 8:58 pm

"Kill you?" Cass's voice rose an octave. "They did this to you. How can they justify killing you if they feel that that they made a mistake? This is just... just ********." She paused. "Pardon my French."

It crossed her mind that really, there was no point in keeping any of them around, if they ever finished whatever process they were putting them through, if there was an end to it. Why shouldn't they dispose of the finished experiments to make room for new ones? She certainly had no idea what it was they were studying, if it were chromosonal or psychological or what.

She certainly couldn't say that aloud.

Cassidy rested an arm on the table, careful not to break her feathers, and laid her head down on her arm, beside her plate. "The wheelchair wasn't so bad. It was while I was getting used to my prosthetics. It was a pretty nice one. At least I'm independantly mobile, now."

"That's what I said, though I guess it wasn't as... er... imposing, since I happened to be tied up and on the floor." He grimaced, flicking his wings a little. "I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do now. They said they're monitoring me closely, and giving me some bullshit about wanting to help me or something. It's freaking me out enough knowing there are cameras without being sure they're going to be watching my every move. I'm not entirely sure it was me anyhow - I don't remember that night any better than you do."

"Y-you were independently mobile before they started turning you into a snake..." Despite the overwhelming fear he had, there was considerable pity for the snake woman. Sabin had said that Zach should be grateful he wasn't being turned into anything horrible, and cases like Cassidy really made that clear. "Better that you don't have to rely on either any more."

PostPosted: Sun May 21, 2006 9:55 pm

"Watching for what?" Cass raised her head again. "They better actually help, you know. Instead of really carrying through on that death threat, I mean. Their fault. Not like any of us asked for this. And to be quite honest, I really would have liked someone to tell me flat out just how Aubrey was attacked. I know I ate something that night. Something big enough that I haven't really had a proper meal since then. I don't even know what it was. That bothers me. How was I supposed to know that I didn't swoop down on Aubrey and try to choke her to death?" She shook her head. "It's not fair to hold you accountable, even if you did do it."

She poked at her steak. It was cold, by now, but it still smelled good. "I was perfectly normal, when I came here. Average. Less than, really. At least these days, when I find myself waking up in trees because the staff's up to stuff, I don't have to head back home on my knees."

"They neglected to tell me what they wanted to see. I guess Moreau's just... really... really... overprotective of Aubrey? Though I did almost kill her..." Zach almost turned green at the proposed question. "They forced me to look at the pictures... she was... slashed across the stomach and... bitten... on her arm, and her neck... it's not something you could have done." The taste of blood from the meat was reminescant of what was apparently Aubrey's the morning he'd woken up. Good old social indoctrinations - now he was probably a cannibal in addition to a supposed killer. Way to find an even darker side to what was already rather dark to begin with.

"I don't think fairness is really the issue..." He looked uneasy. "Especially considering what they've done to Jamal, and Billy. They could and would go through with killing me and just kidnapping some replacement. This whole knock-out thing is probably going to kill us all before long anyhow. Maybe that's why there never seems to be a shortage of newcomers." He rubbed the back of his neck where they'd passed an electric current through him twice in one day. "I guess there is no normal any more. Not here."
